The truth is that the last THREE police chiefs we have had all asked about body cams. But it just isn't really feasable for us. -Cost of the cameras -Ability of the network
Those two items are just a HUGE hindrance. We already push our network as hard as we can with our RMS suite and in car camera feeds. I mean body cams are just a lot of data. My department wants body cams, but there are too many financial hurdles to them for us at this point.
And to Chris...compliance is only optional for a "reasonable" thing. If there is a situation that needs sorting then yeah, compliance is great. If I am sitting on my porch drinking and you want to step up onto my property or come into MY house, sorry but you can sod off.
If I was in charge of a British ISP and this was being forced on me, I personally would do exactly what this article is reporting. I.E. I would purposefully block things that are not porn and let others go through. Maybe even block Youtube for several hours once a week or so when the system runs an "update". Why? To make people complain. That is the only way to get these idiots to stop on their censorious power trips. Get people mad.
If by "we want reform" they actually mean "we want all the bad press to stop". Then I will agree with that. Actions speak louder than words, and I have seen no real attempt by anybody to actually DO SOMETHING about the CIA/NSA/FBI's spying escapades.
I personally buy all my own physical media then rip those to a 6TB RAID5 NAS I have on my home network. My friends say that in this day of streaming media what do I need my own personal collection for? I told them a couple years ago this would start to happen, and verily different studios have started to pull their content off of Hulu/Netflix/Amazon in favor of their own crappy inconsistent services. You will only see the streaming market become more fragmented as time goes on.
I actually work for one of the agencies that have access to a stingray device. Talking to people who know about it state that it either doesn't generate a "dump" of data like you would imagine a cell tower would, OR that "we" don't use it for that capability if it does have it. Basically it is used for two reasons. Either it can give you a list of all numbers that are currently pinging the device or you can give it a specific number and "locate" that number. Officers have stated that if they know a number to look for it is accurate enough to pinpoint you practically within 5 feet. They have used it to stand outside an apartment complex while looking for a felon and pinpoint exactly which apartment in the complex he was currently located in.
If it comes out that the DOJ actually tried to tamper with a witness...I mean shouldn't that be page 1 news? Shouldn't Fox News or CNN or anybody be screaming about how unethical that is? Calling for people's heads and all?
Or am I jaded to think nobody cares because she is Muslim?
Re: Re: Re: Re: Guess they run their in car video different than us
uh no my paycheck comes from the City payroll "pool", therefore I am paid directly by taxpayers. And, at least from my perspective, the current environment here is actually rather healthy. No fighting against filming by citizens, very strong IIS that has actually filed charges against three officers in the past couple years, and my biggest complaint about any particular officer is that they are lazy and not a bully or anything like that.
not to say there have never been problems, in fact the Department was in a heap load of problems over 10 years ago. But because of that the leaders changed and the culture shifted. You are right you can never stop people who are truly willing to block the camera, or pull the cable, or whatever. But at least here that type of thing isn't taken lightly.
Guess they run their in car video different than us
I work Tech support for a major metro department. In our cars there keys to the bay that only the Admin Sgt has, and no way for officers to manually delete videos without admin credentials(which we give NOBODY outside of our staff). We do that for the simple obvious reason, to curb abuse. Now they could still turn off the system(and it can not be turned off while their lights are on). But at least it is one barrier of "proof". The new system we are working on actually will have a built in "buffer" that automatically records everything(video only) even in "idle" mode as long as the car is on. It would automatically overwrite, but that days at least a day to happen. We have/are putting in place items to curb abuse, shame more places don't take these obvious steps to do the same.
I have to actually side with Beastie Boys on this one
If this was just some random parody on the internet, yeah they would be copyright bullies. But this is a commercial out to explicitly "make money". If that company did that out of the "goodness of their hearts" and didn't plaster their name all over it, then it would be clear cut Fair Use. Or maybe if it was openly parody where the express purpose of the parody itself wasn't for commercial benefit(like SNL or parody websites). As is, it is pretty clear infringement IMO.
If everybody followed "thou shalt know what thou art talking about before talking about it.", then the average person probably wouldn't have much to talk about...
