How the administration of the current President is any different from the guys we threw out three years ago? It seems like no matter who sits in the Big Chair the entrenched bureaucrats keep pulling the same cons to help their crony friends make money. If the President can't control his people, or doesn't know what they are doing, or tacitly and/or explicitly approves, then why should we allow him to keep his job?
Perhaps the solution is term limits on department heads. Of course, they would need to hire someone qualified so would just poach people from the industries they are supposed to be regulating...
I strongly believe this enforcement should be a civil matter, so I remain confused and concerned why it is being treated as a criminal issue.
That being said, we should tell the White House about the overwhelming negative effects of forceful disconnection from the Internet. Everything from bill payments to schoolwork is now done on-line, so the punishment does not fit the 'civil infringement.'
Next, let's look at the many (many) ways that identification is flawed. Unlike a fingerprint or a mugshot, an IP address is not a person. It is almost nonsensical that the government could be considering legal actions on what is, in actual fact, hearsay. I seem to recall a TechDirt article from two weeks ago where an EU minister (or some such) was accused of downloading infringing content and the response was "innocent until proven guilty' - except that isn't what is proposed with 3 strikes laws.
Finally, let's talk about the failed war on drugs. The fact that a high percentage of young black men will be forever part of the penal system (either currently incarcerated or stuck with the stigma on their record), and all of the attendant social ills that causes (absentee fathers, inability to earn an education or job skills), should provide guidance here. Additionally, the government exacerbates the drug problem by creating a two-tier system of justice (reference penalties for crack vs. cocaine, which is really black vs. white). I fully expect that model to be used here for the war on infringement. This will become yet another way to disenfranchise a group of people - namely, those that are either too poor or too smart to pay Hollywood's premium for digital (unreal) goods.
I encourage everyone to use the comment system at the White House. But do it smart and put forth rational arguments.
I'm a little confused. These aren't anecdotes or 3rd hand ramblings. Glyn used QUOTES from De Gucht. Quotes are, by definition, one of these 'facts' you yourself wanted to see from Glyn. Not only that, but these quotes were made in front of the EU Parliament. De Gucht absolutely knew these statements were on the record.
This is my review of the Barre Cleveland gym. I give them very low marks for the following reasons:
Barre Cleveland is not conveniently located for me. It is very far away from my house and my office, making it difficult for me to visit Barre Cleveland regularly (were I a member).
I read that the Barre Cleveland prices are high. I do not want to visit Barre Cleveland if their prices are high. If that is true, it does not seem like Barre Cleveland provides good value.
The Barre Cleveland facility appears to be quite tiny, when looking in the direction of Barre Cleveland from where I am sitting. This might mean that Barre Cleveland does not have a lot of gym equipment or that Barre Cleveland does not have many workout spaces. Also, I wonder if the Barre Cleveland facility is large enough for human-sized people. I cannot tell if Barre Cleveland even has clean washrooms or any parking space.
I have read that Barre Cleveland believes it is possible to "steal" an excercise class. I do not believe this is possible, unless one were to abduct the students. Does Barre Cleveland think that members might be abducted or kidnapped from the Barre Cleveland environs? This makes me concerned about kidnappings at Barre Cleveland. Perhaps Barre Cleveland has skimped on security.
Finally, I am concerned that Barre Cleveland, and it's employee Mario F Salwan, might have comitted a crime by violating Ohio Revised Code 2921.21. If there are criminals working at Barre Cleveland I do not want to visit there.
How, exactly, is Kickstriker supposed to be infringing on Kony 2012? It seems to me that any projects which help to raise awareness of dictators are a good thing, unless Kony is claiming to be the arbiter of such things now?
Also, this is clearly protected speech so Kony can go pound sand.
The guy is doing this because he is creating a 'Google+Noun' service using those 750 domains. Basically he is trying to say that Google shouldn't get to keep their trademark so that he can mooch off of their popularity. Lame.
At least support the concept. I have supported over 30 projects on KickStarter. Not all of them get funded, and many are only of interest to 50 or 100 people, but I have found some really talented artists who are doing great things - and isn't the act of discovering new things what life is all about?
I actually discovered A.F.P. via her connection with Neal. I supported their speaking tour even though they clearly weren't going to make it to my part of the world because they promised to post the full live show as MP3s. I am supporting her new album because I think that this is exactly what we need in order to break the 'gatekeeper model' where only an anointed few artists get the exposure.
A.F.P. - I really like your UKE song. I'm going to start playing it on my Strumstick.
Finally, yeah, the Smurf Tits pic is classic A.F.P. and will certainly become the unofficial name for the album.
Right there with you brother. I was also reaching for the Funny button, then I decided it might be Insightful, but now I just want to click Report The Troll.
Full disclosure: I'm somewhat of a fan. I funded Amanda and Neil's fireside chat tour thingy on Kickstarter a couple of months ago and have already pledged for her album.
The Twitter guy doesn't get it - at all. Kickstarter is indeed a great way for artists to make a connection with fans but it isn't about starving artists. It is a SPECTACULAR way for fans to Vote With Their Dollars/Euros/Yen/giant rocks (Rai stones) and it is about making personal connections, as Amanda says. In my very recent history I have both the Pebble E-Paper watch ($8,500,000) and Bob Bernard and Kailin Yong's "Harvest Queen" ($3,478). Obviously they are very different projects, but both people had compelling stories and offered me value for my money.
I'm a proud user of Kickstarter because I get to connect with people like Amanda in a way that can never happen with a 'major label artist' because the labels can't afford to allow any external input.
Thanks for bringing this important news item to our attention, Mike. I was previously unaware that blogger Heather Armstrong was recently in L.A. filming a YouTube video. Had I known that Heather Armstrong was recently in L.A. filming a YouTube video I certainly would have been following the story about Heather Armstrong filming a YouTube video in L.A. more closely.
I have a couple of questions. When Heather Armstrong was recently in L.A. filming a YouTube video, are we sure that it was, in fact, a YouTube video? I think it is important to get all of the facts correct, if only for the sake of Heather Armstrong's sterling reputation. Is it possible that Heather Armstrong was recently in L.A. filming a Vimeo video, or perhaps Heather Armstrong was recently in L.A. filming a short film for a venue-to-be-decided-later? Has anyone asked Heather Armstrong if she was recently in L.A. filming a video to be aired on SNL?
Also, any truth to the rumor that she attended Coachella while she was in L.A. filming a YouTube video? If so, does that change the facts of the story? I believe that Coachella is actually located in Indio, and not L.A., although it may certainly be considered to be part of the greater L.A. environs I suppose.
After all, it is important that the facts are accurately reported in Heather Armstrong's legal suit over defamation (which occurred on the web site GetOffMyInternets (GOMI)).
Odd that they are being sued by both of the major players, and that neither has released a cheap iPad application. Interesting, since one would think that this should be a great market to be in. I think that the Fed needs to investigate both Semantic Compaction Systems and Prentke Romich Company for violations.
And let the copyright holders start suing a bunch of people for holding garage sales and your sainted grandmother for selling your old iphone on eBay. At some point, soon, the People will realize they have lost their freedoms and turn in to the Rabble.
