-- And how exactly did you determine Manning's intent?
I believe the whole point of whistleblowing is that whistle-blower believes something wrong, immoral or illegal is being done, and the exposure of this activity to public scrutiny is needed to allow the maleficence to be corrected.
Manning has been described as a whistleblower. If Manning indeed believes he is a whistleblower, wouldn't that imply that his intent was to correct a wrong.
"If I was stealing stuff for a living, I could see CL as being a very good place to fence the goods, especially if I could sell them into another city instead."
If you were stealing stuff for a living, I could see that using a Toyota pickup could be very helpful to fence the goods, especially if you plan to transport them to another city instead.
Correction:
The above US murder statistic was from a number of years ago. Here is a better source for the most up-to-date information available -- 2009, in which there were 13,636 murders in the United States
A link to the original AIM Group report is found Here. Featured prominently on the cover page are the words "sponsored by Oodle."
That tells you all you need to know about this researcher and his report.
-->Pre-directed custom conclusions for sale.
I suppose however that its also good to know that there were 16,204 murders in the US in 2010. Considering the millions of Craigslist transactions, and considering the fact that Craiglist has become a dominant method of selling used good throughout the US, the fact that only 12 out of the 16,204 murders were associated with Craigslist makes it very easy to draw the exact opposite conclusion from the assertion stated in this smear attempt by Oodle
Let's not forget that Palantir was founded by a group of very smart guys who used to be part of Paypal. It's rather unlikely that the principals at Palantir and Paypal don't still know each other quite well.
Palantir has tried to distance themselves from the Wikileaks/HBGary affair and act as if they didn't have anything to do with the direction of the plan, but a reading of their email has revealed otherwise.
While there is only a circumstantial connection to the issue in this post, nonetheless Palantir continues to be a supplier of very expensive software that allows government intelligence agencies to analyze contacts between individuals.
The stated objectives of HBGary and Palantir were to isolate the individuals associated with Wikileaks and cut off their support.
This move by Paypal would seem to be addressing a closely related and parallel objective of further isolating Manning
Do you ever notice that the bigger the corporation gets, the more centralized planning they employ?
Ironic I think. Centralized planning has been rightly discredited because it is inflexible, but then those who run large organizations worry less about flexibility than they do loss of control.
"Anything that works to lower that level of fear and return the Western world to a more normal state of affairs is a victory over the horrible effects of terrorism."
Since when is what the TSA is doing a "normal state of affairs"
Wouldn't the most appropriate "normal state of affairs" be resolutely continuing to respect citizen's freedoms.
The discovery phase of any lawsuit these days is almost always a "fishing expedition". That's what lawyers do.
If you don't like it, stop using software that hides a bunch of metadata. For some reason, software engineers have this desire to store a bunch of metadata inside working files, and it rarely provides serves a purpose or benefit to the enduser. MS Office is one of the worst, but it's a widespread issue.
"The government uses the logic of "we don't know, so we need to check". That isn't the same as assuming everyone is guilty, they assume everyone is an unknown that needs to be dealt with on an individual basis."
By this logic, the 4th Amendment is completely negated. Couldn't the government always say under any circumstance "We don't know. We're just doing this little search to check."
"I'm a gun enthusiast, and my wife's a doctor. Hence the guns and the drugs, all for legitimate purposes. The difference with sites like torrent-finder is their primary purpose is illegitimate. I'm not sure what the confusion is."
The primary purpose of guns is to kill other human beings. How many legitimate opportunities to use your guns for their intended purpose have you had. Perhaps you are ready to admit that if you are deprived of your guns by the rule of law, that it's all for the best?
I think not.

I'm surprised no one came back to further bury bob's argument when the Amanda Hockling story was posted just 2 days later. My guess is that at 100,000+ copies per month, with 70% of that being take-home money, that she's doing a lot better than most any other author who's contracted with HarperCollins
