Of course everyone is considering just those solutions everyone sees as fair.
Allowing immigrants to come here and pay into those systems with the understanding that they would get NO payments later [or while they are here] would resolve the issues mentioned so far.
I ignore newspapers because the physical media is inconvenient. Who wants to lug a newspaper around until you are sure you've read everything you might want to? What if I miss something? I can't get it back after I throw it away. All those problems go away with on-line media. The comment section is a nice bonus yes, but not the reason people are flocking to those sources. I read Techdirt for years before making my first comment.
Seems to me that most of the issues with patients, copyrights, etc. go away if we just limit the duration. Why try to find the magical solution to all it's ills? If the lifespan is short enough, it won't be a problem for long.
If ACTA passes, it won't matter. People will ignore it to the point that the volume of cases will make it unenforceable and be repealed in some way, like alcohol prohibition in the 20's.
All this is well and good, but I always come back to the fact that if I'm not happy with my purchase, Citibank can get my soul back. The pope runs a poor second!
And notice that all the counters in a bank are bolted to the floor in cases of righteous indignation. (JC is #1 !!)
Your presumption is that the soul is connected to one's liberty. Is it? It's in the Declaration of Independence, but not the Constitution. Funny that. Thomas J must have been dozing.
I could see why they might not have those interfaces to use wireless but if they're going to do that, at least make sure the wireless is up to the task.
Don't be surprised with Flash support comes later, provided Adobe overhauls their Flash code to be worth a darn. I doubt HTML 5 support is going to materialize that quickly. People are going to want internet video support.
I believe that is the current [but not unfixable] perception problem with the iPad. It can't do 90% of what those developers do with their Macbooks. If it was a laptop replacement, it's positioning in the market would be optimal.
Most people are still trying to figure out what this actually is. I haven't heard a good description from anyone. Steve is throwing this 'thing' out there and seeing what happens. It's either completely stupid, or a master stroke of genius. We'll find out which, in the next year.
With the iPhone, Jobs dictated what the user could do because of the small form factor of the iPhone. You could do all this stuff from your pocket, oh and it's a phone too.
With the iPad, the form factor benefit has been removed. The iPad will need to do more to make up for it. If that is more general computing functionality, or a 'killer app', who knows. Jobs would be wise to find out what the users WANT to do with it and work from there, instead of what he did with the iPhone.
I used to think the same way about file sharing and torrent sites, until they all started losing their cases. I can't see it would most likely be a win. It may just be wishful thinking. I think the judges feel a win for the fair use folks would make copyright practically unenforceable, so wouldn't rule in their favor.
A thousand years from now, very little will be known of the culture of the late 20th/early 21st century. All because of ridiculously overextended copyright. Of course, looking at this period of mankind, perhaps that is a good thing.

Dictating what the user does, doesn't always work
