Didn't you get paid when you sold the song? Why do you believe you are entitled to a royalty every time it is played or bought? Do you think that GM or HP should get a percentage of a company's revenue if they use a GM vehicle or HP computer to generate that revenue?
It could come back to haunt the very companies in support of these laws. I envision a musician who is suing a record company for royalties filing a SOPA complaint against the record company.
But shouldn't the site be found guilty of IP infringement by a court before having it's payment system killed or web site removed?
Could artists that are owed royalties by record companies, file notices to remove or block the record companies website from the internet? After all they could argue that as the “holder of an intellectual property right" they are being "harmed by the activities” of the record company?
If the entertainment industry let me download a movie in a format that can be played on any device with no limitations, most people would have no problem paying a couple of dollars, let alone 10 cents.
Water is literally free from one's tap, yet people a dollar or more for bottle water.
What the heck is a "net sales" deduction? Are people returning downloads? How does a record company get away with charging a container charge for a digital download? There is no container.
And some people here want us to believe that record companies have the artist's best interest in mind.
Before satellite and cable TV, TV networks gave away their content for free. How did they survive? How did they create new content in a world of free? Yet, today, we need all sorts of laws to 'protect' content creators and distributors.

You are correct OOTB, not many people producing original content. That includes Disney, which relied on stories in the public domain to produce new or different but not necessarily original content.

And that sums up the legacy content industries. You buy a DVD and you still have to deal with the anti-piracy warnings.
