Re: Yes, but you keep arguing that multi-party infringement
"isn't actually infringement. Your position is that is if Pirate P uploads to host H then posts the links on site L, then it's NOT infringement!"
Pirate P - is infringing, but harder to whack a mole with.
Host H & Site L (why not Site S, sorry that would require consistency) - are not infringing, but are big honking targets that a blind man could hit with a shotgun.
Your use of chutzpah reminds me of that classic definition of the word. Chutzpah is when a man who has murdered his parents asks for leniency because he is an orphan.
Re: Synopsis: Big Media bought politicians, now we're all doomed.
"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.""
Isaac Asimov, column in Newsweek (21 January 1980)
Re: Nah, Mike, you're brushing aside the problem of infringement,
Geez Louise! I need a guarantee that I'll make back ALL the money I invest in a movie. Mike you have to come up with a better business model for me.
The world changes and it is YOUR responsibility to adapt or fall by the wayside. Life is uncertain and as an adult you need to come to terms with. If you don't want to take risks get a job that just gives a paycheck and doesn't require to take a leap of faith in your product or abilities. After all not every lottery ticket is a winner ... or does that upset you also?
Re: Re: Re: Because you have a weird definition of "the public"
"And how many of those 1 million people thought they were sending some email to stop censorship and how many actually read SOPA?"
How many supporters or more importantly congressmen and senators have actually read SOPA?
"Helping someone get content for free is NOT protected speech. It's being an accessory to a crime."
Preemptively taking away someone's 1st amendment rights to make sure no content is infringed on is about as un-American as you can get.
"And if you don't like the media companies, ignore them. Don't buy their cruddy merchandise. But don't steal it and use "free speech" as some rationalization."
Three point in reverse order.
1) Where did I use free speech as a rationalization for unlicensed coping?
2) Because of their actions I BUY less than I use to and if I can completely avoid the company (Sony) I will.
3) I would love to ignore these companies. However; as long as they keep trying to act like the Catholic church in medieval Europe before the printing press and also trying to steal OUR cultural heritage, that is not an option.
Re: Because you have a weird definition of "the public"
"I don't think 99.9% of American knows about SOPA or Protect IP."
The current population of the US is about 311 million. .1% of that would be 311,000 people. Since over one million people emailed congress is more than three times the amount of people you think know about these acts, I believe you're in error. Yes there might be some duplication, but I did not include snail mails, phone calls, and petition signatures so my calculation is probably on the low side.
Of course from you're view point it gets worse when you realize these are only the people that spoke up.
"So quit deluding yourself. You've got only yourself to blame. If you don't provide content creators the ability to protect their work and stop low-level "sharing", you're going to get draconian bills like this."
After years of being treated like a cow to be milked for money at best and a thief at worst, I no longer care what happens to the content companies. I care about the content creators and that is a separate issue. The content industries have brought this on themselves. To quote Princess Leia: "The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers." Just substitute content for star systems.
The previous article was about the Finns And Norwegians. The next article better be about the Danes and Icelanders or someones feeling are going to get hurt.
If youtube gets shut down what replaces it, another gatekeeper? Because youtube has no gatekeepers many people have had the chance to create, share, and earn money without someone standing in their way. Here's a few people that I probably wouldn't have ever had to chance to hear of without youtube.
Felicia Day; "The Guild" -comedy
Elise Harris; "What's that vegetable?" - comedy
Periodic Videos - Science
NurdRage - Chemistry
potholer54 - Debunking & skepticism
Simon's Cat - humor
SMBC Theatre - comedy
The Young Turks - news from a progressive view point
ItsJustSomeRandomGuy - comedy
I'm convinced that these people and many more that have succeeded in finding an audience without a studio's "help" is why Viacom and the other studios feel threatened by it. So count me as one of those people that think getting rid of youtube would be a horrible idea.
Before you keep getting upset about the "organizers" not identifying themselves to your satisfaction perhaps you would like to tell us who you are or at least what group you work for.
When one of these artists can prove to me that everything they have "created" is brand new and original with nothing that has gone before I'll get in their corner. It is virtually impossible create something that isn't a mashup to some degree.
