Just keep watch for a job opening in the FBI for a "Theater Director" or something of that nature--if they're hiring then we'll be seeing many more of these operations.
On the other hand, reps of various organizations (Go Daddy, Blockbuster, to name a few) are generally lied to about what is legal and what is not, specifically to a) sway their opinion in a certain direction and b) so they can convincingly repeat the lie to customers.
Well, anybody who's backed up by those with a self-declared monopoly on force CAN take any specified amount of money from you on a monthly basis. (see: taxes)
The cables companies are only stupid and deluded as long as they don't have absolute backing from the government. With enough lobbying, "cutting the cord" could very well become illegal.
Just imagine the SWAT team led by your local sheriff kicking in your door at 3am and dragging you off to jail because you refused to pay for cable TV!
Does porn count? Because I'm pretty sure I nabbed at least one French-language porn inside that time frame.
Maybe he means "no new French movies were made, thus they were also not downloaded" which would make his statement true, we'll have to check. Again though, if you include French video porn movies it's without doubt provably false.
Maybe he means "No new French movies were made (excluding porn) and we could not detect any French resident downloading them, therefore we're an big super awesome success at stopping piracy." I'd believe that, given the new-found popularity of various encrypted proxy services in France...
We could devise and list a patent troll index, which is simply a list of patent holders which a number which reflects their # of patents / # of employees.
Examples (complete with BS Guesstimates)
IBM: 10000p / 250000e == 0.04 a nice low 'troll index'
Patent Troll 7: 500000p / 3e = 166666.667 a very high 'troll index'
That'd make a nice easy way to distinguish who's a stupid asshat in need of "disappearing" due to their abusing the system and creating nothing of economic value, versus those who innovate & produce things.
Hmmm, we might also need a 'troll index vs lawsuits' number as well to indicate their litigiousness.
"Shame on Coons for falling for such blatant propaganda."
If propaganda didn't work, nobody would use it.
Besides, Coons is only human... and humans are provably fallible.
Maybe we should give him the benefit of the doubt--perhaps he has the best of intentions and was simply suckered by a slick con-job; a very not-at-all-rare event in Washington DC I'd imagine.
Much as I love the horse & buggy example, maybe we could use some others as well?
For example, once upon a time most homes were lit using candles, oil lamps, and gas lanterns. Then one day, a certain middle-manager douchenozzle whom history for some stupid reason credits with being an inventor; Thomas Edison, to be specific; managed to successfully mass-market the lightbulb--and the sales of candles, oil lamps, and gas lanterns has never been the same.
Maybe I'm stupid (there's a little troll bait) but this all sounds an awful lot like corporate-driven censorship.
Moreso when faced with the fact the corporations which issue false takedowns are never fined, never jailed, never punished.... just issue a takedown and content gets "disappeared"...
