They could include the words "This video is a piece of shit but it is a piece of shit that is protected by the first amendment. If they can take this down they can remove something that is actually of value in the future".
All Cox cares about is that you buy their top tier package. Since then I have gone well over every month. They send me an a notification email when I exceed my cap but have never charged me or send any threatening emails. They pushed me to buy the ultimate package so they got what they wanted.
In the famous words of Bill Cosby: "That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard". Make about as much as assuming that the person paying the bill at an IP address is an infringer. What if the car has just been stolen and not reported? Who is going to be held responsible when a cop issues a minor ticket to a driver that turns out to be drunk and he kills someone a few minutes later? Cops are trained to spot even subtle sings of impairment. They could also recognize wanted criminals or fleeing suspects from a crime just committed. They might see weapons in a car on the way to a drive by shooting. Unfortunately some risk is involved in being in law enforcement. That includes unexpected results at what appears to be a routine traffic stop. Don't you ever watch "Cops"? If you don't have the balls for that go into another line of work.
Just made them look like complete idiots. The whole world is laughing at their pointless and childish tantrum. Even they knew it would not stop the leaks. If they really just wanted to be destructive they could have just taken a hammer to the hard drive since that is the only part that contained any data. This laptop was probably just a decoy anyway.
My point is even someone with very basic computer skills knows that a document can only be temporarily stored in RAM and is gone as soon as you shut down. This was just childish retribution for embarrassing the government. They even knew that Rusbridger isn't the only reporter that has the documents. You would think that they would at least want to know what else Snowden leaked because it is obvious they don't have a clue.
Yes, those are dangerous occupations. Accidents do happen but they occour unexpectedly. Working at Boeing would be considered a reasonably safe job but in my years there I know of 4 accidental deaths. None of them had a clue when they came to work that a crane load would fall or they would be hit by a fork lift. The difference is police officers knowingly go into dangerous situations. They get a call of shots fired or a holdup in progress they move in even though it could mean they could be killed.
Several of you have pointed out the code of silence prevalent in so many police departments. Sad but unfortunately true. Even good cops don't like snitches. I don't have an answer of how to change this except for offering better protection for whistle blowers.
I still have comfort in knowing if someone breaks into my house and I call 911 that cops will show up and come in not knowing if the intruder is armed and they will become the next entry on the Officer Down web site.
One good thing is I believe the Wichita police chief is a man of integrity and has shown this on many occasions. If something like what happened in Omaha occurred here I think most of these guys would be quickly suspended or fired.
Are these idiots really so technically ignorant that they didn't know that if they wanted to get rid of the documents that all they had to do was remove the hard drive and use a secure erase program to fill every sector with ones and zeros? The whole thing reminded me of the classic scene in the movie Office Space when they took the fax machine to the field and smashed it. Drills, angle grinders, dremel tools etc? Really? Did they think that grinding down the motherboard was necessary? Did they think Rusbridger was bluffing when he told them there were other copies? David Cameron is a clueless idiot.
It angers me when you hear about bad cops because they are the ones making the headlines and not the vast majority of good officers who are risking their lives every day to protect us. When you get situations like this where there are so many from one department it means that the higher ranking officials there have failed to set standards and discipline cops who get out of line. I have seen many examples over the years of our local department suspending, firing and even prosecuting cops who violate policy. The Wichita police chief would never tolerate what these cops did. Heads would roll.
I wrote a scathing email to Mike Pompeo about his failure to support the Amash amendment and he replied with the straight down the line NSA bullshit talking points most of which had already been debunked. This is a complete 180 for him. I guess my congressman wants my vote next election after all.
It is true that a very small minority of bad cops give the rest a bad name. Most cops play by the rules and at a moments notice would put their own lives at risk to protect others. However this guy obviously should never be given a badge and gun. Police departments use psychological screening that hopefully would keep this guy out. Good cops are often criticized even when they do everything right. A while back an incident in my city was entirely recorded on surveillance cameras where an officer pursued a robbery suspect that fired a shot at him. Instead of firing back he ordered him several times to put the gun down. It was only when the guy raised the gun again that the cop shot and killed him. Even with overwhelming evidence that this was a proper shoot you should have seen all the whining comments about why this cop shot the guy.
I am not big on downloading but a friend showed me a cammed movie he downloaded. When I commented how really bad the video and audio was he said that this was one of the better ones he had seen. I guess some people just HAVE to have the latest films while they are still in the theaters but if they just wait they can get it in BLU-ray either legally or not within a matter of weeks after the theater run.
Never said he did not have every reason to sue for an extreme violation of his rights. Emotionally I am sure he suffered but there was no real physical pain involved. If it happened to me I would not only expect a cash settlement but I would want the names of everyone involved published and fired or at least severely disciplined. 1.6 mil is still a bit much.
I just wonder how the dog alerting on the car seat justified them assuming he had something up his ass. Was he farting cocaine fumes into it? Dogs can be helpful in finding drugs but interpreting their actions can be sometimes be entirely subjective. Other times it is unmistakable. When I was in the Army they brought a drug dog into the barracks. A friend had a bag of pot hidden in his mattress cover. The dog went straight for it barking loudly and pulling on the mattress in his teeth.
Why was the X-ray and one probe not enough for these idiots? Wouldn't a warrant be required for even this much? Any judge would set some kind of limits. No way he would have allowed any further action after an X-ray was negative.
Is there some part of the story we are not hearing? Maybe this guy was a drug dealer and the cops were waiting to bust him. It just so happened he was not carrying this one time.
