"Thank you for contacting me regarding intellectual property theft. I appreciate hearing from you and I appreciate the opportunity to respond.
S.968, the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property (PROTECT IP) Act of 2011, was introduced by Senator Leahy (D-VT) on May 12, 2011, and was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. On May 26, 2011, it was reported out of Committee and is currently pending in the Senate. The bill targets websites, particularly those registered outside of the United States, which are "dedicated to infringing activities." These rogue websites typically offer unauthorized downloading or streaming of copyrighted content or the sale of counterfeit goods including music, movies, and pharmaceutical drugs.
Websites targeted by this bill are foreign owned and outside the reach of U.S. laws despite the fact U.S. intellectual property is being infringed upon and U.S. consumers are the targets. Rogue websites cost American workers jobs and cost businesses millions of dollars in lost revenue. As online technology and commerce advances, we must see to it that injured parties have the ability to stop infringers from profiting from counterfeit products. For example, a victim of infringement will have the authority to file a civil action against the owner or registrant of a rogue site. If an order is granted by the court, third parties will be required to stop processing payments from the infringing sites, therefore, preventing infringers from collecting payments. I will work to ensure that our laws our modernized to protect intellectual property, and will keep your thoughts on this bill in mind should it come before the Senate for a vote."
If you had any doubt about the intelligence of Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)her response should leave you with little doubt.
“Critics of SOPA can’t deny the undisputed fact that piracy hurts America,” she said in an emailed statement. “The same radical left-wing special interests groups that advocated for Obama’s so-called net neutrality regulations are trying to hijack conservative principles and mislead the public about SOPA.
“The fact is SOPA only applies to dedicated foreign rogue sites that are harming American consumers and creators,” she added.
Someone needs to tell the guys at RED STATE that they are "left wing"...I dont think they've been given the memo
I just she thinks if she can throw enough Ad hominem attacks in there people will be fooled

She is everything that is wrong in DC within just one comment. Oh, and will someone inform them on "RED STATE" that they are radical left wing? I dont think anyone's told them yet.
Unfortunately, Ms Blackburn only allows email to be sent from her constituents. You have to provide a zip code within her district to gain any access. So use 38372 if you REALLY want to let this woman know how truly stupid you think she is
Who said anything about free?? Infrastructure investment on average returns 1.6 dollars for every dollar spent. I'm sorry you find it baffling perhaps its all that tes you drank swallowing the bitter pill...
People are not "sitting around". They are trying to find work. As for food and shelter, good thing government provides a safety net or many people would have neither. As for free, thats the money big banks are getting...at virtually zero interest, and turning around and buying treasuries (even at AA+) and making a nice little safe profit
Thats totally wrong. The one and only goal of the private sector is to make money (and there is nothing wrong with that). Transit has a very high up front cost and the returns are meager at best. Thats why there isn't a rush for private entities to build rail transit systems. Government's goal, however, is to improve the public good (or its supposed to be). They invest in transit, which in turn spurs private development which broadens the tax base. So as you can see, fares alone aren't the only thing you can attribute to "paying" for transit. A private company building rail would not be able to tap into that revenue stream and would have no incentive to keep fares low. Most people who use transit have no other alternative, so this also adds to the work force as well when you can move people from point A to point B. In fact if one looks at Toronto, they attempted to go with a private model that failed miserably. There are just things we need that government provides that the private sector wont or cant. These projects should be at the local level with federal grants. Transit, by nature is no more self funding than the roads you drive on...once again built by the government
I have to disagree. During the Great Depression the WPA created jobs for many that would have not been working at all. They built lots of valuable infrastructure some of which is still in use. I'm not sure there is political will for anything like that now. What the government CAN do is help the states with addition spending. Most of the job losses in the last 6 months or so have been government sector workers due to budget cuts. People forget that these are real jobs that put real money into the economy. When you are in a liquidity trap (which we are a la Japan's lost decade). When there is no sign of inflation (just the opposite is a real threat). The LAST thing you'd want to do is cut spending. The best way to erase a deficit is growth. Private industry isn't spending. Consumers aren't spending. The government needs to increase demand. That in fact is more the problem...lack of demand from consumers.
I think thats the big question here. Is TN going to be spying on you to find out if you gave your password to a friend? What if you log on from a different machine or IP address. What if you are visiting relatives for the holidays and access your account? Do the RIAA-Police come get you and throw you in jail until you can prove otherwise (a disturbing trend in law enforcement these days...guilty until you proven innocence or just pay up)
Between ad-ons RefControl (telling them the traffic is from twitter which is unlimited), Linkstatus (which doesn't tell the last date I visited) and Noscript (mentioned earlier...no java script), Firefox has me pretty well covered in the free category. Do I feel guilty? No. I also dont feel guilty when there is content that is made almost impossible to view when you pay (past tv shows) for free via bittorrent. I pay for cable...they just make it just short of impossible to do the right thing
He will read all these comments. There are some pretty good ideas here for free that he would pay a marketing consultant for if he went that route...ooops are we counterfeit marketing consultants? Let the lawsuits begin (and I've read about lawsuits on TD that make that seem viable in some minds)
Norvir was one of the first in a class of drugs call protease inhibitors. As a stand alone (as part of HAART) it had lots of side effects and quickly became a back bench drug when new ones came out and the price reflected that. It was then discovered that low dose norvir boosted many of the other aids drugs and thus its use dramatically increased at which point Abbot increased the price EIGHT TIMES the original price. They should have lost their US patent too, but here money trumps everything else
Lets say you live in...Alabama and gay porn (or some types depicting sodomy) is illegal to distribute (dont know that it is...just a hypothetical). Can this company sue you? Possession might be ok in this instance while distributing is not. I would think you cant hold a copyright on illegal material...
but if you are on the GA sex offender list, you cannot live within 1000 ft of where a school is located or children congregate. This applies even if you were there first and they built a school within 1000ft. You would be forced to sell your house and move. This is not justice
