Anon: In fact, it's not a lie. That's exactly how it works. Labels give the artist a loan. With that loan they pay for their album to be made. Unlike regular loans however, all the money made from albums sales doesn't go towards paying it off. The artist then makes royalties on album sales (between 10 and 20 %) and those royalties go towards the advancement. Until the advancement is paid off the artist doesn't see another dime. Do a Google search, and you'll come across this.
Now does this justify piracy? It depends on who you ask since each person only needs their own level of justification. Me personally.. I just started listening to music licensed under Creative Commons. Why don't we talk about that more often here?
So I'm adding Gamestop to my boycott list. Techdirt has really helped me compile this...
From someone who has over 90 games on Steam... (credentials, check) I can't imagine how this is anything more than pulling money from loyal customers. It will make them some money in the short term but I believe this kind of practice will only push people towards Steam. I haven't even considered unlimited downloads a 'Feature' until today because of Steam. Add to that their regular discounts and their ability to give Indie games a competitive boost... (Terraria as a current example)
I guess the only thing I'm hedging on is that Steam won't disappear in my lifetime. If it does, they have promised us the ability to download each game DRM free before it happens. (prepares 10 TB hard drive). Hell, before I die I plan on including my steam account in my will. Something I could do before with DVDs but now I don't have to worry about format changes, scratched discs, etc...
"I somehow don't see them directly competing against eachother for a while."
Android also has a market as an operating system, something we've seen with the tablets. There is still an obvious collision here. It's the Netbook vs Tablet collision, but still a collision. I'm interested to see how the Chromebook takes off, kind of hoping it will put a dent in the iPad market. Though with the short lived popularity of the Netbook and the huge iPad craze we seem to be having... it's going to be tough.
though, I'm a bit bias. I have an Android Phone, an Android Tablet, and the CR-48 Chrome OS Laptop.
The math is a bit off. According to the article his alimony payment went from $250 a week to $75 per month. Her alimony wasn't reduced by 70% but by about 92.5% (assuming $1000 a month).
What is the possibility that this conference could allow us to pull undesirable judges from various patent cases. In the same way we pull jury members based on potential bias, it should be logical to assume we could do the same for judges. At a minimum it will give weight to potential appeal cases if we can prove a conflict of interest and bias.
Does anyone have a list of attending judges? I would love to see this list made available.
The issue her isn't that the books cost less to produce, as fellow readers are pointing out, it's also about what people are willing to pay. There is a third issue however, and it's owning the market. This problem could be solved if another company could rise up and sell the same books for less. However, I don't see Amazon losing it's hold on the e-book market anytime soon, so they can sell these books at whatever price they want.
There are a handful of people in the inter-webs shouting "Boycott Sony". While I'm not shouting it from the highest mountain top, it will be quite some time before I knowingly give money to Sony. I might even go out of my way a few times to see if a product or movie feeds their coffers... but what can we really do?
Cause if there is something else... I want to know.
I believe it's more likely that Sony simply folded to pressure. They realized they were creating a PR nightmare and were being viewed widely as bullies.
I also don't think Geohot was in a position demand anything in a settlement. Did he really hold any cards in this case or was it simply a legal defense? Was he counter-suing?
This is really a question posed at NYTimes.com readers. Does the New York Times offer a better product then other free news sources?
Does the New York Times offer up a level of quality that other news sources don't? Do they offer more 'truthiness' in their news stories? Do they deliver the content faster or in a format thats more appealing?
If the product you are trying to sell is being given away freely elsewhere, you have to make your product better somehow. Is nytimes.com better?
Also searching news.google.com for source:new_york_times seems to be an easy way to jump the fence.
