You hit the nail on the head. Almost all of us have Wifi, but almost none of us connect to each other with it. Until we do, this is all just wind in sails.
That's great, up until the big providers start blocking ports and filtering packets. Are you going to be one of the guys who plugs in the wall-wart WiFi repeaters and start an unmonitored web?
The first problem with this is that ISP's are throttling and even blocking bitTorent ports. The second problem is that this would allow mobile users a work around for their usage caps: if they can Wifi their content locally, they won't 3G/4G it, and ATT won't get their massive overage tax. Plus, people could start a private, volunteer Wifi network with no government or ISP oversite whatsoever. The broadband and entertainment industries aren't going to take that sitting down.
This is where I have a contention with Mr. Masnick. if there are no net neutrality rules, and considering a large proportion of broadband in the US is monopolized, how can this technology take hold?
It would appear that an AC answered my question while I was typing it. So what people could easily be doing is:
A. Create an overly broad patent.
B. Let it be denied, and wait a year or two.
C. Ammend the patent to use a new technology (or several) just coming out.
D. Get the patent, because it is now narrow enough for the USPTO.
E. Sue the person/company who actually created the technology.
F. PROFIT!!!
All of a sudden, the cries of, "well, it wasn't obvious when the patent was applied for" ring very hollow.
The thing is, the FASTER the patent is granted, the SOONER it expires. Nothing pisses me off more than a software patent applied for in '96, but granted in '04, so prior art from '98 doesn't matter.
...And I just realized something. When a patent is "Applied for" in '96, does that mean it is there in it's final form, or is it being ammended while keeping the '96 date? Maybe this isn't such a lottery after all...
Soooo, what you're saying is that a musician should be able to make a living because he's that good at it? Because he practiced his art for 10,000+ hours?
Well, I've been picking my nose for 40 years, an hour or two a day. That's at least 15,000 hours! Pay me, so I can do it full time!
Andrew, we live in a capitalist society. You get what people are willing to pay you for the value you add, be it painting, programming, music, whatever. You may be highly skilled at what you do, but if no one else values it, too bad. You don't get to make a living at it. Quit whining. Shut up.
You're right. And neither did most of the people who worked in Nazi concentration camps.
I'm not saying the TSA is killing people, or comparing airplane safety to genocide. I'm saying that YOU are ultimately responsible for your actions. Not your employer, not congress passing laws. Until the 1960's, it was illegal for black and white people to marry. Did that mean that it was morally OK for the sherriff to arrest a couple just for getting married? Authoritarianism doesn't work if subordinates refuse their orders.
By the way, if these people found this work so distasteful, and they are getting low wages, why not find another low-paying job? The pay would increase if they can't find people to do the job. Kinda ruins you argument...
This is a California state law. This implies that all the studios have to do is move out of California, and not take pitches from people who live there. (Or get the law changed.)
You, sir are not an American by any stretch of word or imagination, regardless of your legal place of birth.
Please save your thinly veiled threats for whatever third world dictatorship which you can more properly call home.

1. Make municipal monopolies illegal
2. Create net neutrality rules
If it's not illegal, local governments will continue to do it. It's too cheap and easy (by design).
