First you assume we don't fight piracy, say, by not infringing on copyrights (I know, it is hard for you to believe that not everybody on the internet isn't downloading). But, no, we will not actively fight piracy by advocating law that will benefit a small fraction of the economy (gatekeepers and middlemen) at the expense of our freedoms.

One point that I made on some other news sites commentary is that you can't opt out of some info sharing that your mortgage company, your bank, your credit card company, your insurance agency, car loan etc. provide to third parties to target (read: junk mail) you. Companies have been doing this for ages. Now translate to the internet and it is some new threat? And since the internet is Google, let's blame them. Many dolts said they were headed to Bing or Yahoo! Surprise! They are doing the same info sharing that Google does.

Re: Re: Re: Re:
Too bad it doesn't cost $0.10 to produce a steak. Copies of digital movie files cost essentially zero to produce. So if you charged $0.10 for a digital file of a movie I am sure you will see a lot of people paying for the movie even if they had never seen it. Now bump that price up until you find the magic number where people are still willing to pay for the convenience but not feel at a risk of wasting their $2. The studio should recoup easily (well, not technically according to studio accounting) and the rest is pure profit.

Re:
I think the Repo Man/Men sequel thing has more to do with branding. Because Universal is promoting Repo Men they don't want to have Repo Man II coming out during the same release window (could be five to ten years long). They want to milk the Repo Men thing for all it is worth. Now if Universal are planning a Repo Men II then Cox is truly fighting in the alps.

Re: Re:
And at the lower price people would save $T because they would rather just click a checkbox and pay for a digital file instead of ripping every cd in their physical collection.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re:
Copyright is not ownership! Just look at the word! Copy...right! The exclusive right to copy a work. I can own a book but have no right to copy it and distribute it for money. That right is a government granted monopoly to the publisher/author.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re:
So just because nobody has a copyright on "making books" (which, of course, is more of a process fitting a patent more or less) there is no monopoly.
The entire point is that a monopoly implies that nobody else can do something.
The something I want to do is make a space movie with lightsaber weapons in it. Due to copyright (monopoly granted to Lucas) I cannot make such a film. Every single copyright is a granted monopoly. As a whole all copyrights are monopolies.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re:
Copyright is a government granted monopoly to produce a specific work and block everyone else from copying it and making money off of it. Pretty sure Disney wouldn't like WB to start pressing and distributing Cars 2 DVD's, hell putting it up on the WB website for streaming. Stop trying to claim copyright isn't a monopoly. That is just idiotic.

Re: Men are better drivers
How many car crashes has Danica Patrick caused or been in? Now all the other crashes were caused by men. Looks like men are the bad drivers. (Note: this data does not include demolition derbies, I saw a woman win one of those once)

Point #1 - The community censored the pointless/baseless comment.
Point #2 - Mike or the community can censor all they want legally, albeit can provide detractors and critics a (desperate/inaccurate) accusation of injustice...the government, not so much.

I see your point but to me the term "uncanny valley" means the point at where it becomes creepy. In the case of robotics the improvement (or simplification) of the robots themselves could pull them out of the region of the uncanny valley. For targeted advertising it will be a change in perception/acceptance in human nature that will eliminate the uncanny valley. In the recent Target instance Mike would have to say that the teenager getting maternity/baby product coupons was useful but it still creeps us out.

Re:
Regulation is a means of the crony capitalistic monopolies to prevent competition. Large corporations essentially get their politicians into legislative/executive leadership and push regulations(laws) that only somebody with their resources can handle. The lumbering bureaucracy of a large corporation does not allow for quick/risky innovation. They would much rather keep milking their monopoly rents than innovate. The barrier to entry for an upstart willing to take risks and innovate is set too high with the continued piling of regulations.
