It is sad, really.
I am glad they are spending taxpayer $ so they can be cool. And I would like to echo the refrain we give to cops when they are out busting people for jaywalking, "Don't you have real, dire problems to solve?"

Instead, it was a single movie that left in the real meat of the story, focusing on Anakin Skywalker's relationships and his fall from grace.
Jar-Jar was pretty bad but putting the terribly acted relationship between Anakin and Padme on display without shiny lightsaber fights to distract us would be equally torturous.
But in the end you can always uninstall bloatware pre-loaded on a PC or laptop fairly easily. The only way on a phone is to root it...which may be above a lot of users heads.

Scary Thing
It is tragic that people know their government has the power to issue a threat of many years in prison based on something as innocuous as visiting a website.

If you spot a camera during commission of your crime be sure to give the camera a well framed crotch-shot...video evidence is now inadmissible in court!

Last I knew, Renault doesn't sell cars in the US. Don't know the laws in the other countries based on consumer rights where Renaults are sold, but I am sure US manufacturers have dreamed up this scenario and had to reconsider.

Re: Smells like anti-electric car propaganda to me.
You need to know a little bit about the story before you start going into a balls-out rage. The journalist wrote a bad review of the Tesla model about performance. Tesla fired back that the collected data contradicted how the journalist described his route. So if anything the journalist is "anti-electric car." All three of your points either were never inferred in this article nor are relevant to the topic.

Re: This could have easily been avoided -- at very low cost
It would have been much cheaper to simply have the feds manage the project, open-source the entire thing, and let those who support it perform the development.
Ummmm...the feds were managing the project...managing the way they always do. To failure.
