The reason this isn't news is because it is commonplace for companies *cough Google *cough Microsoft, etc. to lower their standards and bend to countries with high censorship and bad human rights track records for the sake of the almighty dollar. Always with the excuse of: "it's against the law of this country, and we are simply obeying the laws of this land."
Apple is being a hypocrite again. This is old news.
“Governments, if they endure, always tend increasingly toward aristocratic forms. No government in history has been known to evade this pattern. And as the aristocracy develops, government tends more and more to act exclusively in the interests of the ruling class -- whether that class be hereditary royalty, oligarchs of financial empires, or entrenched bureaucracy.”
Way back when I used to be an Apple enthusiast. I made a number of apps for the Apple ][ platform (yes I'm old). The system was completely open and fun to program.
Then they came out with the Mac'n Trash. Completely closed and unless you were a close friend of Jobs or Woz you were not allowed to make apps for the Mac. I think it was this closed system thinking that eventually led to Billy Gates coming to the rescue and saving Apples sorry asses.
I create apps for both iOS and Android but only as a contractor. Someone pays me for creating the apps and they get to figure out how to make money in Apple's walled garden or in Android's infected Play Store
Not just a problem with trolls but with American courts in general
My wife is from England. She's told me that Americans are considered "sue happy"... Everything that offends will be "taken to the supreme court".
Patent trolling is a symptom of a bigger problem in that the justice system is broken and is often misused as a club to beat up those who do not have the means to defend themselves.
It's sad really. Many mornings I wake up and wonder what country I'm living in.
AHHHH...I've created a monster. I've always had a problem with malpractice insurance. It drives up the cost of medical care and in MOST CASES it isn't needed. Typically it is there to offset the cost of medical trolls that shake down wealthy doctors for money.
It would be sad that the cost of software development was also driven up because like doctor malpractice insurance -- its existence is to feed the trolls.
That software developers need to fear that popularity of their creations will awaken trolls whose business model resembles that of the mafia speaks volumes for how broken the patent system is.
Well, we have health insurance, auto, property, and malpractice insurance why not patent infringement insurance? Software developers could contribute to a central fund in case their apps become so popular that they are attacked by trolls. It's just sad that this even needs to be considered.
I think the generation gap does have a bit of an influence, but this is more about power and control than it is about a bunch of elderly men in congress yelling at the cloud.
I keep thinking about Alan Cooper (the real one not the one that is an invisible figment of Prenda Law’s imagination.)
He appears to be one of the biggest victims in all of this mess. Eating popcorn while others are suffering is kind like stopping at a traffic accident to buy peanuts from one of the reporters.

This is like a football game then
The rest is taken up by huddles, time outs and beer commercials.
So Prenda is like pro football players. Getting paid millions for doing essentially nothing.
Only worse since pro football players do not typically extort money (unless you consider paying hundreds of dollars for statium tickets extortion).

No wonder the allies used Navajo to stump the Germans.
