When has the US ever done this? They stumble from one war into another war like a drunken giant.
The war on...
Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Iran, Cyberthreats, Terror, Drugs, (fill in the blank).
Sad thing is. I'm American.
I wish the US would concentrate on its own problems (trillions of dollars in debt and out of control government spending) instead of wasting time playing cops and robbers with the world.
Exposing AT&T's security flaws (which has the side effect of hurting their reputation) is not a 'criminal act'. The facts are that AT&T should have been more careful and vigilant with their security; especially with the 'we take your privacy seriously' letters they keep sending me.
Jailing someone for discovering a security hole and making it public will have obvious chilling effects. This is plainly an overreaching application of the CFAA.
While I am not defending the position that the GOP would have done any better, but the fact is that the Obama administration has made protecting whistleblowers a 'priority'.
The administration SHOULD ABSOLUTELY be taken to task for failure to do what they said was a priority. Arguing that the GOP would not do any better is a pseudo strawman argument.
A few points:
1) As was pointed out by others you do not "turn off security" to sideload apps.
2) The infection risks in Android are overblown (I'll get links for you on this if you wish).
3) Most Android users are tech savvy and know how to avoid apps that are a potential problem.
4) Unlike iOS Android apps have many markets: Google Play, Amazon, Samsung and others.
5) As a developer for both platforms I've gotta tell you that it is a HELL of alot easier to publish apps for Android than it is to enter Apple's walled garden. Also the revenue is greater because Google is not as greedy as Apple.
6) If anything, Google having an open market will actually help them in the long run. We have learned by sad experience that as soon as someone obtains authority, as they suppose, *Cough* Apple *Cough*, they begin to exercise unrighteous dominion. This almost always leads to a revolution where the “peasants” gravitate to more open and liberal masters.
1. Google has the right to remove anything from Google play that they interpret as being against their TOS.
2. Google is acting out of self interest.
3. Just because ads are a part of a business model that doesn't mean you as a consumer MUST view them.
4. Technology or any method of avoiding ads is completely ethical.
5. Unlike iOS there are alternatives to download and install apps (Amazon and Samsung for example).
6. This move by Google will at worst backfire with huge backlash, or be insignificant since Google Play is not the only place to obtain Android apps.

Your comment may just spark a completely new debate about if FA and chairs have souls.

What would be funny is once the DRM has been removed by pirates. EA grabs the code that adds the feature of being able to play without an internet connection and then sells this to the fools who buy their crap.
That would be ironic. EA wouldn't need to pay any developers to add this feature; it would be developed quickly and they would make a buck off the backs of the pirates.
You obviously were not around for M$ Windows 1.0. Upgrade to our next version, for only $99 you can get an O/S that only crashes half of the time it did before.
Since when has situations worthy of The Onion become reality? When satire becomes real life we should know that a line has been crossed that should have NEVER been crossed.
When we have a tragedy society blames guns, video games, media, parents, etc.
Never do we place blame where it should be: With the person who pulled the trigger.
