If I'm going to comment on someone else's opinion, I usually have to quote them or at least summarize their position. Further than that, no thought is original, it is simply a synthesis of other ideas. Anyone who has training in art or science knows this.
Techdirt is usually such a sausage party, I thought I'd throw in a comment from my wife. She reads Jezebel.com, and she just discovered her RSS feeds (in Bloglines) are truncated. She was very pissed off, and just unsubscribed (after searching the site for some explanation). I found this post, and we tried the vip.xml, but we get some message saying, "This is a private feed for friends and partners of Jezebel". She's a member of their site, so WTF.
A message to these idiots. First, not everyone is tech-literate. Second, 50% of something is better than 100% of nothing.
Redboxes (at least in Canada, where they are called DVDPlay) require a credit card and do not take cash. That, in itself, insures that the user is >17. If you got your kid a credit card, you probably think your kid is mature enough anyway.
Oh, by the way, do you have internet access? Then your kid has already seen hard-core porn. Guaranteed. But look on the bright side: he probably hasn't done meth yet.
No one has ever died due to marijuana injection. It has no toxicity limit (no matter how much you eat, you can't die). I can't think of another illegal substance that isn't at least toxic at some level.
UFC pay-per-views are $50 for SD and $60 for HD. There were 16 events in 2009 (UFC 93 - 108), and about 12 were pay-per-view. It is expensive to watch all the events.
The problem the UFC is having is they want to crush all competition. Affliction had a couple of good events until they made up with the UFC. Strikeforce has sporadic good events and they are free. What the UFC doesn't realize is more events are better for the sport in the long run even though it might hurt them a bit in the short term. "A rising tide lifts all boats."
Another problem is if people hit some rough times and can't afford to watch the UFC, the only real alternative is to stop watching the sport. The UFC ties up its fighters, and there really isn't any mainstream commentary on MMA. This is due, in part, to the UFC not allowing independent commentators at their events. They just have Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg.
So if the UFC was smart, they would tolerate a bit of infringement in order to keep people interested in the sport. If they crack down, they will strangle themselves.
The UFC was the best thing to happen to MMA, but could end up being the its death.
I watched the leaked version. I also saw the movie in the theater. The movie was crap; worse than X3. The ONLY reason I went and saw it in the theater is I was really interested in seeing the effects finished, as the leaked version had temp effects. That was really fascinating to compare (having dabbled in film-making and effects).
I can absolutely guarantee I would have NOT seen this movie in the theater if I hadn't seen the leaked print. I would have read the reviews and skipped it.
I just bought my wife the Sony Reader for Christmas. She loves it. She has read 4 books already and the battery hasn't died. They are the future, and in 20 years, people will laugh at the idea of killing trees to read books.

How can a blog be doing more harm than good? Wake up. The monopoly rents are over and the unnecessary middle men are dying. Would you rather make 1% of $20 or 100% of $0.20?

USA is a socialist country; socialist for corporations. 90% of the Fortune 500 have received government subsidies. The pentagon is a subsidy for high-tech and the military is a subsidy for weapons manufacturers. Your grandchildren will be paying for the bailout to financial institutions who bet that poor people could repay $500,000 mortgages.

This is the stupidest thing I've read today. Why do you think the internet exploded? Without a useful search engine, the internet is a bunch of floating islands. Remember when all websites had a "useful links" page? Good links were gold. Google destroyed all that, because if you forget the link you just google it and find the page again.
If everyone banned Goggle tomorrow, the internet would collapse.
Gambling is already legal, just not on the internet.
Frankly, it doesn't matter if the US gov decided tomorrow to allow online gaming. The casinos are so far behind sites like Pokerstars, they have no chance.
