Or, in other words, no matter how stupid the thing being said, I'll take it seriously if I'm being given enough money by the person doing the saying...?
That makes a rather large amount of sense, especially coming from somebody who's not paying me.
And, as always, our legislators are apparently incapable of logically pointing out things like "you're full of shit" to these guys; plus I bet they won't bother with anything resembling a cost/benefit analysis while signing-without-reading whatever bullshit bill is put in front of them by the MAFIAA.
I practically live on the internet--were it not for the "human" contact garnered via online interaction on my phone & work computer & home computer I'd pretty much be alone all day every day.
I still say their excess funds would be better spent putting on a pay-per-view cage match with chainsaws & corporate executives--they could even agree to settle their differences out of court by this very method.
It's a win-win-win scenario:
1) the courts have less work (they're already slow as moles-asses in January)
2) there are less corporate officers at one or both companies (new blood in, old blood out, AND job openings)
3) The corps & the pay-per-view network might break even or get a profit on said endeavour, and the people are entertained.
If you live in a system where corruption/bribery is pretty much the only way to get things done (like in the US), then if you want to get any good laws passed, you still have to play the evil/stupid bribery game.
It's not as though the US ever cared about bringing criminal charges--they just wanted to terrorize, oop, I mean "scare straight"--all of the file locker sites on the intertubez.
And it worked. The climate of fear has pervaded the varied file lockers which remain; all of them scared they'll be raided by 'special forces' (or some such) and shot with beanbags rounds, dragged out of their house and shipped to the US just so they can not answer to farcical charges.
I do not believe "justice" was ever the point of the MegaUpload raid, it was terror.
"Why is it that law enforcement almost never seems to think through the actual consequences of actions like these?"
The question posed contains the unspoken assumption that the disruption of anonymous secure communication twixt academics, artists, historians, feminist groups, gay rights groups, community centers, documentation and software archives and free speech groups was not the primary purpose of this raid, with the alleged bomb threat being nothing more than an excuse to take this action. Goodness knows they couldn't just seize the server for no reason!
I think we both know that if anybody in a position of authority suspects it might've been illegal--or that they could totally win a lawsuit and put you into the prison/industrial complex for the rest of your life--then they'll find out more whether they have a right to or not.

Re: Re: Re: Would this be another good time to repeat . . .
Only a thought experiment... too absurd to be a realistic suggestion.
Speaking of, how's this (slightly altered) line look:
Allowing some people to eat is an incentive for others to innovate and attempt to get more food for themselves.
Re: Would this be another good time to repeat . . .
Good!!
This article sparked a thought: What if all laws were judged on the basis of "how many people does this benefit versus how many it inconveniences?" before they were passed?
Sadly, I think the 'final conclusion' for rating laws on that one criteria alone is to strip the wealthy of all their wealth and distribute it to the masses.
Why doesn't Netflix just say to Hollywood "screw you guys, I'll make my own moon amusement park; with blackjack, and hookers." or something to that effect.
They've got enough revenue flow to start producing or promoting original content--and then the rubber band will be on the other claw!

Ms Turkle, I think, needs her head examined.
