"Browncoats, we hear your concerns about the cease and desist on Etsy Jayne Hat sellers!
We weren't involved in that process, but we have reached out to FOX and we've definitely heard what you've had to say. (We know you guys have Vera to back you up.)
As a result, we've decided to donate the profits from all Jayne Hat sales on our site to Can't Stop the Serenity, a Browncoat charity dear to ThinkGeek's heart that raises funds and awareness in support of Equality Now. We'll continue making that donation until we run out of stock of Jayne Hats.
We hope the Hero of Canton himself would approve."
Along with those previously arbitrary walls, said "Apple morality", their closed source proprietary bullshit, and the distinct lack of functional interoperability (without hacking/cracking/unlocking/whatever) with non-Apple products/software.
I live in Oregon, I've never heard of this law. I routinely use the mapping function of my phone without a problem, and I have discussed the handsfree requirements (Bluetooth sends out radio signals BTW) with the cops I know & this has never come up.
The key to this whole article lies in two sentences of the last paragraph.
"There's a way to pull out of this nosedive but it involves many, many people being willing to make judgement calls on the fly and able to face the heat should their judgement falter. Unfortunately for many in the system, the risk is much higher than the reward."
The problem is today's society is too over bureaucratized and litigious to deal with reasonable people making educated decisions, and *Gasp* an honest mistake. The fact is that almost nobody is willing to take responsibility for their own actions, and tries to "pass the buck", leading in this case to a moronic interpretation of a pointless "zero-tolerance policy".
NOTE: The Amber Alert system did not start with ANY lawmaking body.
"The AMBER Alert System began in 1996 when Dallas-Fort Worth broadcasters teamed with local police to develop an early warning system to help find abducted children. AMBER stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response and was created as a legacy to 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington, TX, and then brutally murdered. Other states and communities soon set up their own AMBER plans as the idea was adopted across the nation."
Seriously! WTF? I know that Activision was on that original letter before the bills came out, but did the actually come out in support or did they bail when they saw how Fu%$^# up this legislation is? {Citation Please}
Of course, GoDaddy has just dropped their public support of the Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA. But, they still support the Senate version of SOPA, called PIPA or PROTECT-IP.
