Turing was a special case because Turing was a special case!
He was demonstrably the epitome of everything that his peers strove to be, except in this one area of his life, that at that point in history was illegal. As a result some people feel that the wasting of his life has more importance than that of any of the other victims of that unjust law.
Today homosexuality is more acceptable in his homeland than it is in most of the rest of the world.
Blanket nullification of convictions under a repealed law is a nice idea ... but whose going to pay for all the paperwork ?
Friends as well as enemies. Allies as well as adversaries.
The reason for this is that our friend today may not be our friend tomorrow. To understand the justification for this thinking you only have to look at the alignment of world powers during WWII and compare that to the alignment of world powers 20 years later.
To save you the research I'll spell it out ... in 1943 Russia & the USA were very chummy. In 1963 Russia wanted to put nukes in the USA's backyard.
A democratic government spying on its own citizens however is unconscionable; because a truly representative government can never be at odds with the people it serves.
If only we could convince the lily-livered masses to embrace and internalize it. The terrorists win a victory every time we cave to promoters of the surveillance state.
Or for that matter trying to "blame the victim ...? To be perfectly clear ... Nothing he did justified a bunch of thugs beating the crap out of him.
Conversely nothing the bikers actually did at the initial accident justified him running someone over and neither did his fear.
As for the "forced accident... wtf? Are you suggesting they ambushed him? deliberately caused the accident as an excuse to what ? beat up some yuppie in an SUV ?
Assault on property != assault on person
Slashed tire? Not sure i buy the slashed tire at the initial accident site report; Have you ever driven on a flat front tire ? If one of the front tires was slashed there would've been erratic driving, chunks of rubber on the road, sparks, gouges in the asphalt none of which are evident in the video. just because it's on a police report doesn't make it true.
I wouldn't go that far. Clearly the bikers were in the wrong; but so was the banker. Running folks over 'cuz you're scared that they might attack you is not something we want people to think is ok in a civilized society.
from what i saw of the video the bikers didn't attack the driver until after he ran one of them over ... so how is your analogy representative of what happened here ?
draw the lines for me ... according to some commenters on this thread I'm a biased moron ... so what event before he ran over someone correlates with the pushing, shoving him to the ground and kicking him, in your analogy ?
