Actually the iPhone never was the leader. Throughout its lifetime, iPhone was behind its competitors, Nokia/Symbian/BlackBerry, and now Android. Motorola and Nokia got screwed because they became increasingly irrelevant to consumers.
There's no sign of that happening with iPhones because the common folk know nothing BUT iPhones.
Did I say that I agreed with Apple's decision to sabotage the free market? Did I position myself such that I didn't like any sort of competition in the mobile phone market?
No. I only pointed out that Apple currently holds the marketshare (in terms of tablets anyways), and commands the entire market in terms of profits. This is to disprove the myth that Apple's suddenly headed towards another repeat just because they don't have the command of the market share in phones.
I guess I assumed people would understand that I'm talking about tablets, since this IS about tablets after all.
Apple offers a competitive tablet at prices other brands are struggling to meet. They have a commanding share of the tablet market share (28mil iPads vs. ~1.2 mil Android tablets across all brands).
Having the lions share of a market doesn't mean much if you're not making huge profits off of it. Google is essentially using its profits from search to spread Android as hard as possible, but Apple's the one making money hand over fist here, and the profits keep on growing. If that's a sign of failure, I'll take that any day of the week.
I'm not seeing what you're seeing. Apple has the lion's share of the market at the moment, and will probably command the market in terms of profit share. There's no signs of any such repeat happening at the moment.
At the very least, the copycat looks like a cheap ripoff. I don't know about anybody else, but the kiddie art on Rolling.fm is a huge turnoff to me.
Which is probably a good thing for Turntable. That means that it can pick and choose the features to better itself, while having a design that attracts more users.
This is why I don't get why they don't simply do more commercials on online broadcasts. I'm happy to check Hulu or the channel's website to view the episodes and with commercials, but:
1) They don't seem to do enough commercials (only 1-2 between each break rather than several on normal TV broadcasts), which is I guess a plus for me, but
2) They never have up to date TV shows.
Why not just have up to date TV broadcasts, and include some more commercials so you'll have everyone flocking to your site and be generating more revenue while you're at it?
What would you like for Marcus to add? You clearly have speculative questions that should be addressed, but it's clear that the RIAA isn't willing to even speculate (see said firing of COO).
You say it's hard to draw conclusions without a fuller data set, but the same can be said to the other side. No one's trying to say that piracy automatically equals good. Mike consistently points out that blindly believing that "piracy = word of mouth = sale" is just as stupid and as bad as "piracy = lost sale". The whole points of these articles are to foster discussion and allow for the possibility that piracy can be harnessed for good. Right now, the RIAA will have none of that, even to the point where they will ignore what might possibly be a better business model.
Err, you'd only be liable for whatever happens on that computer if the terms/security protocols at your workplace deem that you must lock your computer for this very reason. And even then, you'd only be legally responsible in terms of the contract of your job, not criminally liable in the terms of the law.
I would say though, it might depend on the rental agreement. The computers are still technically the rental companies, so it may not really be hacking in this case; plus, the camera software sorta has a "semi-legitimate" use in that they can be used to track down thieves. I know that there have been many cases (shown on Techdirt no less), where a stolen laptop used the webcam to track down and get an image of the thieve, resulting in the retrieval of the item.
1) This is a rental computer, so reformatting it might be a breech of the rental contract.
2) When you purchase a new laptop, most OEM reinstall disks they give you come with the same bloatware that existed before the reformat, so you'll probably be screwed anyways, sadly.

If you want to talk about Android phones, then you need to actually look at the profit share:
