For Myself: There are tons of security/privacy/data-mining issues I can see with this. I would probably not post this info myself, since the only thing I care about for flights is price and dates. Arriving/take off on time... those I just take for granted (ideally).
IF the judge is right (and I'll assume that he is, since I'm not a lawyer), Then... the law needs to change.
The issue isn't PSN vs OtherOS, it is "update" vs OtherOS.
If it is not illegal to prevent security/stability updates without screwing your customers... then it SHOULD BE.
Now "feature" updates... I don't know about how to handle those, plus... Corporations (an aside, which are not human beings) would just change "updates" to be pay-for services and stop offering free patches/etc... or something else that I haven't though of, that would end up screwing the consumer more in the end :(
This story would have been a LOT more interesting if it was what I read first:
"CIA Slams Congressional Representatives Who Unfairly Attack US Companies For Speaking Up Against SOPA"
...now THAT, I would like to see
If this were possible, don't you think Google (or some other search engine) would be selling this service to the the MPAA/RIAA/etc.
Everyone likes to shout "free market" all the time, but forget to take it into account in most discussions that actually require it.
Plus first of all, all they are doing is using bots to crawl websites they 'mark' as rogue, and then to make a database of other sites that are linked to by sites that link to that original marked site(s).
This would be the 3rd homework problem in any class teaching how to make a search engine after 1) how to make a crawler-bot, 2) how to make a DB of sites 3) (this) how to link sites together in groups
[UPDATE:] Thankfully, the Government Censors have already redacted this post, else this site would be in violation of the future SOPA2 law, which de-grandfather clauses the internet.
There is something called the CS Heisenberg Principle
It isn't 'exactly' what is described here, but in general, You can't actually measure how good a Computer based system is working without slowing down/altering the performance of that system.
The relationship of how 'knowing something' will end up altering it... seems relevant here.
That being said, this isn't 'exactly' right, but I get the same feeling here. Basically the more that people know this method is being used, the more that people will use it "swat" other gangs. (IE... perform a gang attack 'where/how/when' another (you're competitor) is 'suppose' to do a crime, and then have them blamed for it.
I'd like to see GoG (which I have given money to in the past YAY for Return to Krondor... but anyways...) get games like Mech Commander 2 (which _still_ has a semi-strong following of fans after Microsoft opensourced the game years ago.
If GoG could provide a place for old game-mods/addons/etc in addition to what they already provide, it would make old games even MORE valuable.
hmmm a jump from 5000 to 25000 to get a response from the white house... leads me to believe they don't want to have to give too many responses (and this isn't knocking Obama, this is just how our presidency has been the last 40 years(+?) )
If your application has to "adjust" to all the different devices out there, you are likely "doing it wrong". As someone who has spent many an hour working on Android, ranging from internships, my senior honors capstone, and even my current research working towards my PhD... Android isn't perfect... but it does a _lot_ to help developers make their applications work across as many devices as possible.
And... if you are having that much trouble getting an application to work across multiple devices, you likely need a different/better game engine that handles that for you. If that requires you to make one yourself, or use someone else's, That would be up to each independent developer.
But... Even if you don't want to spend a lot of time developing for multiple devices, then just use the Android Marketplace filters that allow you to disallow devices/device capabilities. This would allow you to sell to the the top 4~5 devices at launch, then continue to add support for more devices later on. Which would be a RtB...
But, "ehh", if you don't want to support multiple devices the WebOS platform is just for you...
But will Apple add REAL multitasking? and a easy way to root the device?
I'll try to keep the apple bashing to a minimum, So...
1) Will apple add REAL multitasking, not the "we don't want you to actually run multiple apps at once, so we fake it" (Android ran _upto_ {It still does some fancy 'faking it' when resources are low on the device, but when not, they actually run concurrently} 6 applications at 1.0 launch)
2) Will Apple devices have a way to press external buttons to load the boot loader on boot up like other device manf. have?
Now... it isn't GREAT... by any means... b/c pretty much everything to do with Computers/Computer Science is a sub-sub-sub category... BUT... it WOULD allow for proper categorization of patents (most would remain empty... like Law, but still they would be there if needed.
PLUS... Librarians work with this system already... so there is a body of people who have mastered this system... can't say so much with "all" of patents.
Oh, and I CAN define what a software patent is, Any mechanism that can be mathematically converted to a mathematical formula (the technical definition.)
All programming code(each individual instruction) has a equivalent mathematical formula.
Ex 1: X=Y+1 ---------becomes-> X=Y+1 ....Yes I know... Obvious, but still
Ex 2: For Loops -----becomes-> Mathematical Induction
Ex 3: If A Then B ----becomes-> A ⇒ B (yes this is actually not 'quite true' but it is close)
And there are more here: List of Math Symbols, So I think it would be easy to define software patents... IF we had a patent categorization system in the first place(and we still need it)
Signed this and posted it for every single tech person I know, (ranging from Software Engineers, PhDs, Network/Sys Admins, Hackers, et. al.) And It is almost past the 5000 signature mark, and I'm SURE it will hit that soon, and will be past the "mark" to get official comment from the White House.
The sad truth is that if we as a nation/society have allowed people living without running water in villages that don't have streetlights to scare us so much that we have stooped to this level of:
1) wasting time
2) wasting money
3) invasion of privacy
4) stupidity because this won't even do what is suppose to do
5) training the populace to accept invasions of privacy
THEN... They have already won.
And the ONLY way to fight back against them and to not let them to continue to win is to fight against these stupid policies. Being for human rights, preventing invasion of privacy, etc... Is not "being weak on terrorism", it is "being strong on American values".
