If this were to pass, then it should be absolute. If Joe Schmoe wants to be "forgotten" on the Internet, then all references to Joe, all of his emails, accounts, photos, bank accounts, etc. should be erased, and he should not be allowed to recreate any of these. IE, he will cease to exist in cyber-space... I wonder how many people would opt out in such a way if that was the effect of their decision? Of course, a side-effect will probably be to erase all of his credit cards, home mortgage account, driver's license, passport, ... As someone once said, beware what you wish for, you just might get it!
I like what "The eejit" said about quantum theory - you can know the number of lawsuits, or which companies are suing you, but not both. I'd like to think of it like this (stealing liberally from Schrödinger): You put a bill (SOPA/PIPA) in a sealed box (secret negotiations). You can't know if it passed or not until you open the box, but the act of opening the box changes the bill. So, the question, while it is still sealed in the box, does it pass or not, cannot be answered, and the bill you get after the box is opened is not the one that was in the box in the first place... Doh! As someone once noted, there are two things you don't want to know how they are made, sausages and laws.
At least someone in my family voted for Senator Ron! My brother-in-law and his wife live in Portland, and are big supporters of the Senator. There are at least 2 votes he can rely upon for his next election! :-) FWIW, my sister-in-law is a serious media content creator, as is my brother-in-law. He is a musician and recording engineer and she is an animation producer, director, writer, creator (can you spell "California Raisins"?), and they made their web sites go dark for the SOPA/PIPA protest...
Mike, the only thing I can say to your post is, AMEN BROTHER! I'm sure my sister-in-law, an animation film producer, director, creator, teacher (and dean of the film animation department at a suitably impressive university) would agree with you - I'm sending her a link tonight after my bluegrass gig. :-)
I am a life-long democrat, and gave as much as I legally could to elect Obama in 2008. Now, I am not giving a penny to the Democrats. The Republicans are disgusting, but the Dems are clueless! It is time to throw the entire bunch of dishonest, self-serving, hypocrites out of office and into jail, as far as I'm concerned. I think I am voting for "None of the Above" in this election...
It is interesting, that in the 1970's, my father was a member/director of the National Weather Modification Board, now a division of NOAA. He was an astro-geophysicist, Guggenheim award recipient, and director of the NSF (National Science Foundation). I just wish he could be around here now to see what foolishness is going on! If nothing else, he had a finely honed sense of BS propagation... :-)
Re: Re: Re: Re: ... ... ...: I've already made up my mind
Well, the almost $200k is now, but until 3 weeks ago I was unemployed for over 4 years, living off of borrowed money and my IRA account. We live in a modest 2 br house in a working middle class neighborhood, drive cars that are 12 and 17 years old, and pretty much only travel domestically to family gatherings unless it is for work. We don't have much in savings, our taxes are going up, and if we eat out more than once every couple of weeks to give the cook a break (me), it is rare. So, raw income alone does not tell the entire picture.
You know, $200k sounds like a lot, but by the time you take out taxes, mortgage, food, utilities, occasional domestic travel, gasoline, insurance, and all that other cruft - suddenly it isn't so much! Of course, if we were paying at Mitt Romney's 15% rate, we'd be a LOT better off!
Well, since between me and my wife we make about $200k per year, does that mean that we can tell our congressdroid to take a long hike off of a short plank, and he'd do it? Man, that would be neat!
Any of you, in any party, that do not come out publicly against SOPA/PIPA in particular, and over-regulation of the Internet and freedom of expression in general, will not see a penny of my money, and I will actively work to see that you are removed from office at the earliest opportunity. The behavior of our representatives has been dishonest, corrupt, and short sighted in the extreme. It is time to throw the bums out!
It is time that independent content producers start issuing take-downs against the major labels under the DMCA. Get their sites taken off-line and they will soon start changing their "tune". So, if a similar name for a song and/or video is adequate to issue a take-down, why not use the same crowbar on them?
Quote Senator Reid, ".... so we need to work on this." Actually, these corrupt morons in the House and Senate need to work on correcting their lack of ethics, and return their bribery proceeds and other ill-gotten gains (insider trading in the stock market, for example) to the American people. Then, we need to throw the bums into prison for the next 100 years or so!
Actually, Moore's law is that the number of transistors on a chip will double every 18 months - still true today - not that the speed/capability of systems will follow that curve. Our software is quickly sucking up the enhanced capabilities of the hardware, so we don't notice the improvement. IE, all that additional capacity is going to help power our animated paper clips...
Even back in the 80's when I was selling computer gear to NASA, Ford Aerospace, Stanford Research Institute, the USGS, 3-Com, and other low-tech organizations in the Silicon Valley, I used to tell my customers that even if it is the bleeding edge when they order it, it will be obsolete when delivered - in less than a week... That is even more true today. FWIW, we knew about Moore's law back then, when Moore was still running Intel.
In my new position (Senior Systems Engineer) at a tier-one mobile phone manufacturer, all new staff (engineering and others) are issued a new, current, top-of-the-line 17" x86 laptop, docking bay, 24" desktop monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. Since I got mine when I started 2 weeks ago, I don't know what the replacement policy is, but I expect that if I need a newer set of gear, I'd probably get it PDQ. You'd think that the organization that sucks up such a large percentage of our earnings would have similar policies?
These bills (SOPA/PIPA) should have never seen the light of day in the first place, and should NEVER get to the floor of the House/Senate for a vote! They should be renamed "Screw the US Constitution and Fuck all Citizens of the US Act". Sorry for the expletives, but sometimes one has to call a spade a spade...
These are my kind of ladies! Of course, I'm going to be a great granddad myself in a few months! :-) And to think, I just started a new position as Senior Systems Engineer for a tier-one mobile phone manufacturer, and my office/cube mate is the same age as my granddaughter, who is the one going to make us greats...
I've never heard of LouisCK before, but this had made me want to visit his web site and purchase his video. I did the same thing with the Humble Bundle game package last year because of the same sort of respect for the user. Even though there were problems with the Linux (I don't use Windoze) version, I still respect HB for their efforts to make their stuff available, and unencumbered, to the community, and will most likely contribute again in the future, if only to encourage them to go forward with this "experiment".
