The illustration of Al Franken being a supporter of this train-wreck-waiting-to-happen really surprised me, given his support for many more sensible and progressive agendas. Did someone hypnotize him? Bamboozle him will bullshit? Hold his kids hostage?
One has to wonder why these governmental goons aren't personally liable for violations of law and constitutional guarantees when they so egregiously violate our rights! These are the people who should be spending serious time in prison! Boy, does this piss me off!
Way back before explosive cannon ordinance was invented, field artillery was actually aimed at the ground in front of the enemy troops. The idea was to skip the cannon ball off of the ground and through the enemy troops, killing or maiming as many of them as possible. So, if you want to fire a solid shot cannon ball to do the least damage, aim up into the air so it embeds itself in the ground when it lands.
Canons are just plain fun! Back in my misspent youth we used to take sections of auto exhaust tubing, weld a base plate on one end, drill a hole near the base plate, and use oxy-acetylene for the propellent. Then we could launch a tennis ball (just right size for tube w/ a shop rag for wadding) about 1/2 a mile! It also made a very satisfying "boom!!"... :-) We figured a tennis ball would do a minimal amount of damage when it landed. Of course, we aimed at an empty corn field as a target. Only rabbits and such to worry about.
There are a lot of things that you can criticize Mark about, but his opinions/rants about patents are right on the $$ as far as I'm concerned! FWIW, I hold a US software patent, which is (IMO) novel enough to deserve a patent. Unfortunately, most software patents are "patently" bogus, including about 90% of Microsoft's and Apple's. Just MHO... So, I am not in favor of a blanket denial of software patents (business process patents are another issue), but I would like to see the various patent offices hire really qualified personnel to review those submitted. At this point in time, that is not happening, and many such patents are granted for obvious, trivial, and otherwise ridiculous ideas.
Well, IMHO I think that the principal of her HS should be fired for being clueless about the US Constitution... There is absolutely NO excuse for their actions in trying to force this young lady to "apologize" to the governator.
It's about control! Unfortunately, Ubisoft and others of that ilk (various governments, corporations, and others) have not learned that you cannot control what has been released on the 'net... Just ask Barbara Streisand about that!
I know that it is probably too late, and not likely to change much, but I think it is way past time to throw out ALL of the incumbents in Congress and elect independents to Congress. Both parties are terminally corrupt, and although there is nothing to say that an independent (not affiliated with any party) Member will not be or become corrupt, at least we will have cleared the decks and can, hopefully, regain our respect for the institution... :-(
There are times when I absolutely feel that I must post anonymously, when there is a possibility that my opinion may result in harassment or have negative impacts on my job/career/life. People DO hold your opinions, no matter how honestly and sincerely held or harmless to society, against you. Example: I think nation states are anachronistic and should be abolished in favor of a single world nation, where each of our present nations would be much like the individual states are in the USA. IE, they can have their own laws as long as they don't conflict with those of the nation, and people are free to move and work wherever they want without restrictions, etc, etc. Some people, and government agencies, may consider that opinion as seditious, and in some countries could result in my spending excessive time in durance vile, or even my execution. The PROHIBITION of truly anonymous posting is, in my opinion, a fundamental violation of my right to free speech, and can, as stated, place me in real jeopardy of my life.
So, my final words are - All Hail Anonymous! More power to them, and may they REMAIN Anonymous!
No bread in the market, then let them eat cake! Madame Guillotine had the last word during the French revolution... Sooner or later, people will stop putting up with this nonsense, and place people's heads on the block.
Password protection of a phone does not encrypt the contents, and current phone scraping tools bypass that directly. What is needed are phones that have strong encryption of the contents and REQUIRE a proper password/key to access in any manner, other than to receive a call.
This is why I refuse to purchase commercial software any longer unless there is a driving reason why, such as my use of Sparx Enterprise Architect for software design/modeling. If I want to keep getting updates, then I pay the annual fee (less than $100USD). Pretty much every other package that I use is open source.
Just how long will it be before Big Brother starts using this data to track us each in real time? Privacy? It is a defunct concept in this day and age. :-(
It seems that these days too many people don't want to take responsibility for their actions, kids, etc, but would rather place the blame for their failures on others, such as Facebook in this case. I just wish there was a cosmic "dope slap" that could be applied to boneheads like this fellow...
Well, it may be a bit late, but I think that Alan Lomax has been dead for some time (July 19, 2002 - aged 87). Any such "profits" would go to his estate, if appropriate.
Lomax and wife spent most of their careers doing field recordings and such of many seminal American folk music artists, including Woody Guthrie (I was listening to their LOC recordings on a recent cross-country road trip). Does this mean that all such recordings are in the Public Domain? If so, does that mean that all derivative works are also? Inquiring minds have to ask...
Honestly, give how much these trolls are going after Google, trying to tap into its deep pockets recently, I understand why they are doing what they are doing. Until this entire swamp is drained, however; not much will change as far as getting bit by the 'gators... :-(
