I too gave up my TV years ago, sick of being treated like a moron.
Also I calculated circa 20% of the viewing was watching ads in which I had no interest at all.
My time is much better spent (reading TechDirt :P), and my mind is my own, I don't get propaganda.
As 'The Onion' puts it "Telling you what we want you to know"
I do watch 'Have I got News For You' on the BBC iPlayer, I'm afraid it has lots of English 'in' jokes, so my American brethren may not get them all, but best program ever imo.
Sweet, I hope Microsoft fall flat on their face over this.
They are a dinosaur who rode to high profits on a monopoly of PC OS's. I'm fed up with them crushing small companies who look like a threat because their software is better, maybe when they are gone we might get less bloat and more security.
whenever I change page and am waiting those (ok, trivial) seconds and look down to see why, it invariably says 'Waiting for adclick/adserver/ad(whatever).com, I'm wasting my life to watch an ad for something I have utterly no interest in.
So YES I would pay to get rid of that blight on my life, advertisements.
Seriously, the BBC is not in competition with Google, they are not even allowed to show a profit on anything they do.
If I go to an event, I expect to be seen in public.
Walking down an ordinary road, I get uncomfortable if anyone even looks at me too long - suddenly appearing on street view for the entire planet to see can be too much for some people.
"We want to protect the movie-going experience." = cant see the movie unless you come to us and pay exorbitant prices, because we currently have a monopoly.
Any doctor worth his salt would not ask you to sign any such thing, only rubbish doctors would need it.
So, if your doc says 'sign this' you know immediately he's a cretin and you can walk right out.
Saves a lot of time and effort finding a decent doctor ( they are surprisingly rare).
I cant understand why Americans hate communism, its not evil, its just an alternative political system, its like calling heroin evil, its not, its merely an organic chemical.
In fact Communism is based on 'good' and Capitalism is based on 'evil'.
Communism is based on people being hardworking, honest and thoughtful. Its just does not work at all, its the failed system.
Capitalism is based on people being lazy, greedy and selfish, it works just fine and is the best political system we have (until the machines take over).
The only time I really want to see a naked woman is alone in the same room as me.
But I don't give a crap if others want to watch it and I certainly don't feel my social fabric being destroyed by it.
If anything it is greater and more draconian censorship destroying the choices I have within my social fabric.
Seriously, is there anything on TV worth watching? I got rid of mine years ago and have never even slightly regretted it, indeed it has enriched my life.
TV eats into your life, health, space, finances and all you get in return is a steady flow of moronic drivel telling what and how to think.
I do watch TV series, documentaries etc, I just get them elsewhere online. (there is always 'elsewhere')
We did this as an experiment at school, we died mashed potato with (untastable) food dye. The colored potato just tasted 'wrong' even though we knew it could only taste like normal.
I'm sorry, this is a little off topic, but it drive me crazy that Americans use the term 'they could care less' to show how little someone cares, but if you CAN (could) then you must care something in the first place, in order to care less.
The correct phrase is 'they could NOT care less' ie, its not possible to care any less than the do, because they don't care at all.
Back on Topic, Netflix is not available in Europe. I was looking forward to it as I don't own a TV, not sure if its worth the effort now.
