Straphangers.. Re: Re: New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) is going down the same road. To deal with its budget crunch the MTA is planning to say that its unlimited ride cards are actually quite limited.
NYC subway cars used to have leather straps for people w/o seats to hold on to-- thus riders where and still are called STRAP-hangers in NYC lexicon. today we have metal bars not leather straps ,, but the lexicon is still used.
Welcome to NYC

And , again it is just a toothless MTA proposal to limit the un-limited -- very unlikely to happen. The MTA wants an uproar , so they can look nice when they do not do it.
But they are cutting back service here in NYC -- esp on late nite transit -- which as a musician who works late into the night is a pain for me
ME : This is just a proposal. MTA does this all the time ,, a few months ago they proposed doing away with Student Free fare cards ,, but the uproar killed it.
The MTA pulls these little political tricks all the time. It is actually pretty savvy on their part-- they threaten something they really do not want to do , to horse trade it off elsewhere

This thread is case in point. Totally meaningless posts on a good source for debate. Ever wonder why Lessing does not post here Mike ?

I really do not understand why you Mike let threads here fall into the gutter. How does that help a good public policy debate? What purpose does it serve? Entertainment for posters?
The whole post shows all the more reason why Musician -songwriters need full protection of ASCAP to protect song royalties. That is where many songwriting-musicians make their real $$.
Pro studio musicians do OK -- are they rich ,, no ,,,,,but they make more than 90 % of people who gig music in bars for a living. Studi guys in a union and get scale. But they do not need a strait jib , like bar band dudes do.
Now, some will obviously state that this is a problem for Congress, not the courts, to fix. And, to some extent that is true.
MIKE :"Now, some will obviously state that this is a problem for Congress, not the courts, to fix. And, to ==some extent that is true==."
ME : It is all true. The courts rule on what law says. If the law has "un-intended consequences" Congress has to fix the law. They will. Congress likes libraries.

By Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) - 04/13/10 02:31 PM ET :
The copyright laws offer creators incentive to produce new and unique works. These may come in various forms, including movies, music, and books, all of which are important components of American culture.
These works create jobs, from their production and manufacture to the advertising and sales that support them.
To cultivate these new jobs, intellectual property enforcement must keep pace with an ever changing digital world.
As an avid photographer I am intrigued by the debate at the turn of the 20th Century about whether photographs were copyrightable creations, or merely technical representations.
Public discussion then helped shape copyright laws to accommodate the new medium, just as it does now as times and technologies continue to change.
Today people watch television on handheld devices, skim books on digital readers and enjoy music on laptops, benefiting both content owner and the user.
But along with these new opportunities for distributing creative content, the World Wide Web has also brought new challenges.
"A rampant increase in online piracy threatens the financial viability of those same copyright owners who benefit from our new technology.
This risks harming not only those creators, but the hundreds of thousands of jobs that result from their products.
It also instills the user with a fundamental mistrust of the technology. Effective intellectual property enforcement is necessary to counter this attack. "
Kudos to Prince-- for protecting Artist Control RIGHTS
MIKE : ...Prince and his music, he is all about control. Control is everything to him. And one thing that does not work in this new digital era is being ridiculously anal about controlling how others access or listen to your music. So, he went somewhat ballistic."
Me : It is all about Artistic CONTROL not $$ , as I have been proclaiming here for a while.
Glad you agree Mike.

Your "words" are meaningless,
