I cut the cord years ago. As prices went up, and up, I dropped what I could, until I finally cut out TV service from Comcast. Then I got my house and one of the first things I did was mount a large Antenna on the roof. THAT is how I get most of my TV. I had already been paying for Netflix.
Signing up for a replacing streaming TV service these days doesn't make much sense. You have Bandwidth CAPS that streaming TV service eats up. Plus these streaming services prices have shot way up. It doesn't seem any cheaper. I could never watch all those channels. Once you dump all that, you get use to less channels with an Antenna. That is free TV. Get an HDHomerun and connect that to your Network and use any number of Programs to DVR, I use PLEX and now you can record your TV and watch anywhere on anything. PLEX will also auto cut out commerials.
These days I do watch a lot of YouTube. There are a lot of great, well produced programs.
We all know what this site is mostly used for and how it has grown because of that. Who cares if someone gets offended by the content. No one is forcing them to watch any of it. By killing this adult content, they are basically killing their site to become worthless. What are they now going to offer that you just can't get at a dozen other places?
I have never been to this site. It doesn't affect me. I could care less one way or another. I think it's dumb for the company to cave in as it did. If I was a stock holder, I'd be MAD as my stock would be worth less and dropping fast. I haven't looked at this stock market value. That's just my guess.
I have security cameras around my house and being on the corner I have a great view of a number of houses. My cameras were helpful to the neighbors a couple of times.
The simple fact is, the EYE'S can not trespass. Anything you can see from your eyes in public you can record. If I wanted to stand in front of your house and record your house, so long as I was on Public Property, say the sidewalk, I can record away. It's your job to close the blinds if you don't want that person to record into your house. It's one reason I keep the blinds closed all the time in front of my own house. Now if you go onto the property and stick your camera right at the window, well now you're getting into trespassing and Peeping Tom laws.
This is ho we have Google driving around their cars with a bunch of cameras and recording or taking pictures of everything they see for Street View. They're on a public road and can take all the pictures they want. People also have Dashcams. Tesla's have cameras all over them that are recording.
Cameras mounted on polls by the Government? Doesn't bother me. Around where I live, they have mics on the polls used to hear gunshots. I guess you can triangulate where the gunshot came from that way.
If you're going to be a criminal, you need to be smart about it. If you're making drugs, you're going to be a higher priority target. You just have to assume you could be watched at any time, anywhere.
I'm shocked Google and Facebook is even going along with this and paying the big company's. I would have just cut ALL news from everyone and be done with it.
Watch as everyone crashes and their viewership sinks like a rock and they cave in and everything goes back to normal once again as the Link Tax is tossed.
I guess if you're going to have any news, it's just far easier to have a couple of the big guys and ignore everyone else. I'm sure all this news will also fall in line with these leftists company's views also. That's a plus for Google and Facebook. They can censor everyone else without it looking like censorship.
I'm really not for these Local City's having their own Broadband service. Now it's basically a Government monopoly. I get that service stinks.
The Republicans are part wrong in this matter. It's the government that created these Monopolies in the first place. This is why you only have Comcast in these areas and TWC in these other areas and so on and so on. There is no competition. I saw what happened when Google Fiber was coming along. Besides doing all they could to stop it, they increased speeds and dropped prices!!!! Because they had competition!!!
I say let Comcast, TWC, AT&T, and anyone else who wants to bring in broadband to any and all cities. Make it much easier for companies to come in and hang their wires. Coax or Fiber. Let's have 2,3,4+ company's fighting it out for every last customer. That means dropping caps, Dropping prices, faster speeds. Better customer service!!!
The government created this mess by listening to these company's in the first place and letting them set the rules and have their way. Nothing has changed. When these company's get special deals if they do such and such and they don't do it, nothing happens to them!!!! Why???
So I find it hard to believe a Government-run system is going to be any better in the long term.
Trump has only been President for 4 years. Well, almost 4 years come next month. This whole Broadband thing has been happening for YEARS and YEARS!!!! This is not some new thing.
One big plus we do seem to have is StarLink which people who had no real option as past Satellite Internet services have SUCKED big time, now have a real broadband option. You can check this out on YouTube as they set it up and do some speed tests. It's a real option for many people outside of town mainly. Those that don't even have a choice of Comcast or even crappy DSL.
My Mom lives out in the country on 5 acres. I'll have to talk to her about maybe switching to StarLink from the crappy satellite service she currently has.
This is why a limit myself of Google stuff. I have a gmail account and that's enough spying I need from them. Let alone all the rest including spying on me everywhere I go.
So I have my iPhone. Apple has no need to spy. They don't own a search engine. They don't make their money selling ad's! I use DuckDuckGo most of the time. I use Ad blockers like Ghostery Which blocks ad's and tracking, etc. Sometimes I turn on my VPN access.
I limit the best I can. I sure don't want 1 company to know my whole life. No NEST for me. I don't want Google knowing when I'm home walking past the freeken thing. I limit to very little of anything on my on Facebook. Just enough so that old friends can reach me. I don't post my life or anything at all on Twitter.
There are things you can do, and not just accept it. Right now with this for Google, it's opt Out and not clear and hidden. At some point you will have NO CHOICE!!! You privacy rights are slowly going away. It's like boiling crap in hot water. Stick them in cold water, turn on/up the heat, and it gets warmer and warmer and before they know it, it's to late and they're DEAD. Your privacy gets less and less every year and before you know it you have NONE!!! They do it FAST and people are up in arms big time. Do it slowly and you can get away with it.
The same has been happening to this country as we lose more and more of our rights and Government grows larger and larger. They won't be happy until you're paying 80-90% of your money in taxes. It keep creeping up. People would be up in arms if they had to write one big tax bill every month, instead of it taken out of your paycheck, and out of everything you buy, and all the services, and Property taxes and on and on and on.
You could tax the so called Rich, the top 10%, 100% of their money and it would be a drop in the bucket to paying off the 20 trillion dollar debt.
This is how it works. Do things Slowly and it becomes NORMAL over time!! If you don't like it, now you're called the CRAZY person!!!/div>
I just got my Comcast letter in the mail about the new 1TB Usage CAP, and the whole load of crap. Of course showing my usage as over that CAP currently. But the dumb listings of you can watch this many HD movies, and so on. All it's really about is them not wanting to become just a dumb pipe!!! If you want to get your TV from someone else, they don't like that. This is their way of stopping that or making you PAY a lot more.
You want to get your unlimited BACK, now it's another $50 a month. Otherwise it's $10 for so many Meg's up to $200. So it doesn't even stop at that $50, but they let it go on for the whole $200 more. It's such a huge scam. It has nothing to do with FAIRNESS and all about protecting their TV service./div>
The problem with IoT is it was never designed for all the crap it's being used for. Security is weak or non-existent. Many times even if you wanted to change a password, you can't it's baked into the firmware. This stuff may not ever get updated, let alone fixed because it can't.
Apple's Homekit is all about Security. Some company's have had issues with that. They don't want to get the chip needed for security as it costs more money. So they go the IoT route.
I just avoid all this stuff as much as I can. I would NEVER get any IoT Camera's or Door Locks, right off the bat. That would be completely dumb. The only thing I have is my device for the Garage door that can open and close it and tell me when it opens and closes. It's not a IoT or Homekit device. I trust it at least more then a IoT device. The only reason I got it was because that's how we get in/out of the house 99% of the time.
My Dad who lives with me has left the door wide open when he drove away. I'd come home to find the door open, and luckily not robbed blind. Especially where I live. Now I'm warned if it's left opened longer then 5 minutes and then 10 minutes and I can close it myself anywhere I'm at. But it also warns him also, and so he can close it. Since having it, it hasn't been a issue.
I tried putting a label on his mirror saying to make sure the door was closed and that didn't work. So sometimes you have to resort to other methods. I do also have a Wifi module on my new Hot Water Heater I replaced this last December. It's really pretty silly. I have a App for it. I can adjust the temp. I mean who doesn't need to do that all the time if not NEVER! Or put it into Vacation mode, which lowers the temp way down. Again I talk right next to it every day in as it's in my garage right near the door. It's so easy to just turn the dial down.
The other features, it'll warn if there's a leak as there's a probe you put in the pan that will sense water. It'll also tell you if there's some other error, issue. The problem with that, It requires Electricity, Yep, where I live in CA, I need a special Heater, This one has a Electric Damper on it. When it's heating it opens, when it isn't heating it closes to help keep the heat in. It's of course larger diameter, because there's more insulation around it. That can be a problem for some people with limited space already. It has a Electric Gas Valve. Any issues and the App would let me know. Problem is, once already the circuit breaker of the outlet popped, that killed the power, killed the Wifi on the heater and stopped the gas valve from working, and in the morning going to use the shower, all I have is warm water. I wasn't told of any problem because there was no power for the Wifi module to work!!! Kind of a big flaw, wouldn't you think?
It's really silly having a GAS water heater that I have to plug into the wall for power. It's on a long cable with a large wall wart(Transformer) on the end. Really, more crap that can go wrong with it. It wasn't cheap ether, even though I installed it myself. Luckily there was a $150 rebate for that heater from PG&E before the end of the year, so I got luckily it went bad when it did instead of a week later. The Wifi on it I think is pretty silly and almost worthless./div>
We haven't had a real Republican to pick from in ages. TRUMP is no Republican. He's just another RINO at best. Really just a wing of the Democrat party. There really isn't much difference between them. People complained about BUSH, a Huge RINO, but Obama has done pretty much everything BUSH did. In fact tripled down on most of what BUSH did.
Where's Code Pink? Bush drops a few bombs and they're out there in force, Obama has dropped 20 times more Smart Bombs, killing civilians in the process and nothing? Where's Code Pink? Oh wait, it's just political. It had nothing to do with dropping bombs. It was just more Bush hate. Just what Democrats do./div>
If Bernie Sanders really had a real chance, the country is completely gone in the crapper. No way could a out right Socialist take charge of this country./div>
The Democrats are really turning words like HATE and Raciest to be meaningless because they throw it out there on anything they don't like!!! Just because you want to throw people out or some people coming here ILLEGALLY is not HATE! Every country including the U.S. has every right to protect it's boarders. I don't care how brown or white you are or from Canada, Mexico, or China. Illegal is still Illegal and you shouldn't be rewarded sneaking into this country.
You should see what it's like if a American went over the Mexico boarder and tried doing anything, like say working.
I'm all for LEGAL Immigration. Get in line like everyone else. A flood of low or no educated Illegals is a huge drain on our system in so many ways including keeping pay LOW because there's so many others to easily take your place. It's a Employer's market. Prices keep shooting up including health care, which is just crazy high and paychecks not going up for the low and middle class.
We're one country. We can't take everyone. It's far better to instead fix their own country's to be a whole lot better so there would not been a need to flee in the first place./div>
Looking at the phone in the game, it could be a number of different phones. it doesn't say Samsung 7 of it. It's a exploding phone and THEY are actually taking credit for that with take down notices. That's pretty funny./div>
I cut the cord, and then when my time was up and needed a new deal, I was forced into a bundle deal getting some local channels and HBO. That was CHEAPER then Internet Only!!!
So look, I'm no longer a cord cutter to them. Even though I don't use their Box, or watch their TV channels. Hell I've hardly turned on HBO using a HBOGo app. I'm still using the Antenna. Still recording onto my TIVO. They're doing all they can to keep people on the TV service no matter what. This is what Comcast as resorted to.
Ya, they never seem to talk about people cutting the cord and moving to a Antenna. Just signing up for every streaming plan, adding the total together and saying, see it's more expensive. You're not saving any money!!!! What a load of crap./div>
Ya, I'm getting ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, CW all in HD and 5.1 surround sound. Plus other channels like AntennaTV, MeTV, etc where I can watch classic TV shows, and what now. There's so much legally FREE content to watch with a antenna.
Just over a year ago when I switched from Media Center for my TV DVR Recording to the Tivo Roamio I have now. They had a deal going, $299 for the Box with Lifetime Service. So NO monthly fee's. I removed the 500 gig HDD, and Popped in a WD Green 3TB drive. The largest size you can go without having to do anything with the HDD to make it work. I can record up to 4 programs at once. With my Tivo Mini's, I can start watching in the family room and finish in the bedroom. With their Streaming Box, I can watch on my Windows PC or on my iOS devices, even away from Home. it costs me ZERO per month!!!
That's where I get most of my content. With the new Commercial Skip. Many programs in the Prime Time area and channels have commercial Skip. 1 green button press, and I skip it all for that break. No having to FF through them. It's just BAM!!!
Antenna is never talked about. There is no one around me that has a Antenna on their roof in my neighborhood. I'd be on my roof, looking around and thinking SUCKERS!!!!
I went and ordered a nice large directional antenna from Amazon. Got a MAST for it and mounted it up and run all new cable around my house. One of the things I did besides wiring my house with Cat6 cable and ending up in my small closet in the middle of my house, connected to my managed 24 Port Gigabit switch./div>
I tried HULU twice at different times with a free Month of service. The last time I couldn't take it. I watched 1 program in that 1 month period. At the time it was nothing but 2 Broke Girls Commercials. 4 of the same thing in a row over and over again at every commercial break, which seems like worse then normal TV. Why would anyone in their right mind PAY for this??? It wasn't worth it. It should be FREE.
I'm not going to pay them $13 to remove most of them commercials. Still not worth it. It's cheaper for Netflix and Amazon and they're commercial free. HULU is owned by Comcast and others so of course it stinks!!!
I always hear these stories, where they say it costs more, because you cut the cord and then sign up to all these streaming services. Who does that? Why would you cut the cord if you were going to do that?
Between my Antenna and Mostly Netflix, and PLEX with me ripping all my Movie discs, I already have to much content to watch and not enough time. I have no need for HULU or SlingBox. Hell I'm paying for HBO, or really they practically gave it to me and I don't even watch that./div>
I had Amazon Prime for 2nd day shipping and Netflix before I cut the cord. I still have them. So I don't consider them a extra cost. My $170 I had a number of years ago with no premium channels and much slower internet was a complete rip-off.
I cut the cord for years. When I got my house I mounted up a Antenna. The only one I see anywhere around me!!! That's how I get most of my TV and it costs me nothing per month. I got a Tivo Roamio on sale for $299 that included Lifetime service, a couple Tivo Mini's so I can Record up to 4 programs at once and watch from One Tivo to another Tivo. Now with Commercial Skip, it's even better. One button push and I skip them all. That's more then paid for it's self in a short time.
This last time when my Internet only service expired after the year, Comcast jacked my rates up, it was actually cheap to get a bundle with a few basic cable channels, mostly local and a cheap, plain cable box, plus HBO and their StreamPix whatever movie streaming thing, then to just get Internet Only. That's how hard they're pushing TV services onto people to keep them from cutting the cord. The cable Box I don't use. it's not plugged in. I'd have to run new cable for it into my house to use it. Why? I just keep using the antenna. Better anyway.
HBO I watch on my AppleTV or ROKU boxes with HBOGo app. For the RARE times I even turn it on. Comcast being Comcast, won't allow the HBOGo App on Tivo to work!!! I guess they have a stick up their butt at TIVO. You could pay HBO directly and use their HBO Now App instead, but I'm in the bundle deal. I'm sure they count me now as not a cord cutter then though I am. It's their dumb tricks./div>
I had no say in the matter. Trump is no Republican. In fact we haven't had a real Republican pick in quite a number of years. Lots of RINO's at best. Really, just a wing of the Democrat party. They're leftest, just not crazy leftest as most Democrats became.
I don't want either elected, but since I'm now forced to pick one of them, It's going to be Trump. He's at least not a politician and just throws whatever out. Clinton is just a flat out liar and criminal. Being a Clinton and a Democrat, she could get away with murder, oh wait, she pretty much has by lack of action./div>
Cut the cord years ago!
I cut the cord years ago. As prices went up, and up, I dropped what I could, until I finally cut out TV service from Comcast. Then I got my house and one of the first things I did was mount a large Antenna on the roof. THAT is how I get most of my TV. I had already been paying for Netflix.

Ya, they never seem to talk about people cutting the cord and moving to a Antenna. Just signing up for every streaming plan, adding the total together and saying, see it's more expensive. You're not saving any money!!!! What a load of crap./div>
Re: Re: Re:
Re: Re: Re: Why I cut the cord
Re:
Re: Re: Re: Re: That is awesomely funny...and sad
I don't want either elected, but since I'm now forced to pick one of them, It's going to be Trump. He's at least not a politician and just throws whatever out. Clinton is just a flat out liar and criminal. Being a Clinton and a Democrat, she could get away with murder, oh wait, she pretty much has by lack of action./div>
