Thieves Vote For Blu-ray In DVD Standards Battle

from the good-to-know-where-they-stand dept

Frank writes in to let us know that the latest news on the next generation DVD battle that almost no one cares about. Apparently, crooks favor the Blu-ray standard. At least that's the story concerning some thieves who broke into a video store last weekend and made off with a bunch of Blu-ray DVDs, but left all the competing HD DVDs. Somehow, I doubt that Sony will use its favor among thieves as part of the marketing campaign for Blu-ray.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Too easy

That one's so easy to spin into a 30-second spot:

O/L: "Based on a true story"
Fade in: Ninja-dressed thieves breaking into store
Cut to: Thieves rummaging through wares
Long shot: One checking Blu, one checking HD
    C/U: Blu logo. "Yeahhhh!!"
Cut to C/U: HD logo. [with disappointment in voice] "Oh..."
Establishing shot: HD thief drops wares, runs to assist Blu thief
Tracking shot: Thieves run out with wares, HDs seen on ground
    O/L: (w/ logo) Everyone wants Blu-Ray
    Fade out

Someone actually being paid to write a commercial could do it a lot more nicely but that's it in a nutshell.

      Re: Too easy

      Yeah, great advertising opportunity.
Only thing I would change is insttead of just showing dissapointment at the HD DVD, the Ninja commits hara-kiri at the sight of the HD DVD.

      Re: Even easier

It's a lot faster to steal it.

Else they would have to find the movie on the web in bluray format and burn it to a blank bluray. (I don't even know if that's possible yet)

        Re: Re: Even easier

Depends on your intenet connection and the distance to the closest store, time of day you decide you want said movies (have to wait till no one is around to actually steal), and if you want to actually bother to burn it to bluray and instead just show it on TV strait from your PC. One could argue that its actually faster to infringe copywrites than it is to steal. Theft actually requires that the original owner is deprived of the object. Downloading only copies it exactly and deprives no one of the original object just the money you would have to spend to purchase the disk assuming you believe the movie is worth that much money and you didn't just steal it off the shelf.

Comment #1: I was thinking about an ad like that as I was reading this post.

Comment #2: Yes it is easier to do that, if you know how. There are lots of people who are not as pc literate to know how to do that (think about your average pc user that uses said pc for only email, jokes, and news sites). They are the ones that would buy stolen movies mainly becuase chances are they won't know they are stolen and some probably know but don't care.

My friend that I was traveling with just bought 20 dvd's in Beijing for less than 10 USD. Funny thing is that the first thing that loads on more than half of them is that 30 second clip about how buying pirated dvd's is just as bad as stealing a car or someone elses purse. lame.

    Couldn't afford to buy

After spending all their money on their PS3s they couldn't afford to buy the bluray discs.

Screw them both - I'm so tired of this entertainment industry BS.

People - do yourself a favor, find an outdoor hobby or read more. It's quite rewarding - just a friendly suggestion :)

      Re:

I agree. The last time the last time I bought a DVD was the Lord of the Rings boxed set and that was only because it was part of $19.99/buy one get on free sale (I got two copies and gave one to my bro). Don't ask me the last one I bought before that (lets just say I buy less than 5 a year). It's very rare that I buy movies so quite frankly the standard DVD is plenty for me. Besides if I guy an a HD DVD or Blu Ray player won't I have to get an HDTV to reap the benefits? I don't watch enough TV to justify spending that much on a tv.

If I was HD I would do it this way...

O/L: "Based on a true story"
Fade in: Ninja-dressed thieves breaking into store
Cut to: Thieves rummaging through wares
Long shot: One checking Blu, one checking HD
    C/U: HD logo. "Yeahhhh!!"
Cut to C/U: Blu logo. [with disappointment in voice] "Oh..."
Establishing shot: Blu thief drops wares, runs to assist HD thief
Tracking shot: Thieves run out with wares, HDs seen on ground
    O/L: (w/ logo) Every thief wants Blu-Ray
    Fade out

And show that to the the Studios.

There is only one reason thieves want Blu... so they can pirate it.

      Re:

      yea, that doesn't make sense.

first you say the blu-ray guy drops his stuff to help the HD guy, but then you say that only blu-ray stuff was stolen. wtf?

i *think* i know what you're saying, but seriously, logically speaking, the stuff you just wrote makes no sense.

        Re: Re:

Maybe that ad would be a spin to say that HDDVD cannot be pirated as easily at Blu Ray?

    PS3 thieves first

They probably stole a PS3 before that and figured out they could play movies on it. Blu Ray that is so they went down and stole them some movies to play on their stolen PS3...
Yes video can be gotten off the net. No the average criminal is not savvy enough to download / burn. Watch the funny videos on Spike TV sometimes. That is the most prevalent type of criminal out there on the street.
