Bailout Bill Stuffed With Pork Apparently More Palatable

from the is-that-pork-or-spoonful-of-sugar dept

In my post about the financial crisis earlier this week, I explained the rationales both for and against the so-called "bailout bill." With some of the important indicators getting seriously scary, it was becoming increasingly important that something be done to keep money flowing, but this bill isn't it. Who would have thought that after the House rejected the bill earlier this week, that they would come back and approve something much worse. Rather than address the fundamental problems of the bill (and, well, the economy), what Congress did was stuff the bill full of pork, adding in every little personal favor to local industries they could dig up. Basically, all of the politicians added in little "gifts" to local industries, as a way of calming public dissent against the bill. And, of course, apparently that was all it took to get the House to approve the bill. Now they can go back home and say that they fought to "protect" their local constituents in the bill, when all they really did was put some pork in to bribe them.

While there's still a chance that this plan works out -- and, at this point, it's entirely based on who will control the fund -- the bill has done little, if anything to actually address the real issues that created this economic mess, and uses a sledge hammer where a scalpel would have made more sense. If it ends up succeeding, it will be in spite of the bill, rather than because of it.

Well, so much for a nice Friday.

This news certainly sucks and it's just proof our government does not listen to the taxpayers, who (by last report) voted against this passing by a 3:1 margin.

And since just posting my reply to your reply, once again big business gets away with screwing up while the consumer/taxpayer is going to get screwed in the next 2-4 years (the estimate on how long this bail out will take effect).

Irrational fear? Now you see why it's not a fear.
Update: frustration just increased to anger.

Funny how when you load a bill down with "sweeteners" all the House Republicans suddenly lose thier ideological objections to socialism.

    Useless Congress, 3 Oct 2008 @ 12:51pm

    Not surprising

This is not surprising. Congress knows there is now a considerable amount of public pressure to "do something", especially since this Congress is renowned for not doing a $%#@ thing. They know the bill is more likely to pass, so they stuff all their pork in it to try and please their constituents and save their jobs. They are running scared that they are all going to get voted out for not passing a single piece of real, useful legislation in the past two years.

Congress Has Been On it for 10+ Years

The Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) has been a simmering issue for the past 10+ years. (If I remember correctly) Periodically, over the years, there is the occasional news story with a Democratic and Republican politician smiling before the camera discussing how they both agree that the AMT is an onerous tax and that they will fix it. This has been going on and on and on and on, with no fix.

The AMT issue has once again popped with Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. However in this case it is hidden in the noise level. Evidently an AMT "patch" has been proposed. I assume that it is simply a temporary fix for show, I don't know the details.

My point, we have had a known tax issue for XX years, our politicians claim (smiling) before the media camera's how they are diligently working at solving the AMT problem. Clearly, since the issue has not been solved, they really have had no intention of solving it. Its all show and no substance. With this bailout, we are simply getting another temporary "patch", that does not really solve the problem. Another case of blowing hot air and "solving" a problem with smoke and mirrors. Well, at least I will save a bit when buying wooden arrow shafts!

Oh, come on, the bill isn't THAT bad. Yes, it's loaded with tax breaks, and I'm not for them either, but most of those tax breaks already exist. It's stuff they were going to be fighting to keep or reject in a few more months anyway, probably with much same results. The worst you can say about it is it's the same old same old. Honestly, the original provision to put 20% of gained profits into ACORN were much worse, and many people complain now about the "Housing assistance" that's in there.

Its still we the people right???

I think most everyone is aware of Washingtons stance to ignore public opinion and do what ever it is they want to do.

How many countless times has Bush rambled on that Healthcare should not be part of Federal Government. Millions of Americans are denied Healthcare because of lack of insurance. I have even seen people layed up in the ER to die without assistance. But that doesnt matter. Whats important is AIG, Freddie Mac, & Fannie Mae. Now the government must get involved there!!!!!!

Man this is awful. Do we have voice? LOL!!! Not one anyone would care to listen. These people that passed this are hoping the public will forget about it. (Thats why Bush is warning that it may take some time to work. Well, he doesnt want this to effect the way people are going vote-heaven forbid the taxpayer should ask for results when they are forking over 700 billion dollars). Dont forget!!! When the economy tanks make these guys pay for voting for the bail out. Maybe your of the mindset that the government should be getting involved with for profit business as part of a government/corporate take over. I am not... If thats the case cross your fingers and hope for the best. I dont we are seriously going to profit in any way by purchasing crap loans that are bound for failure.

My motto is this-if you passed this bail out package-I am personally going to take the time to go down and vote you out of office. . Hey I will even vote Nader... Pretty soon the government will pass legislation forbidding people to vote because Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank know who to vote for better then you do. I hope they pay for this piece of junk by getting sent out of Washington. Their are to many career politicians that never go away. Thats why things never truly change.

G thanks for 700 billion bill you put on me. And who says Washington is broke?

    Useless

This won't solve ANYTHING at all, there will still be a depression and economic collapse, we've known that was inevitable since about 1940... and they have once again managed to steal some more of the American taxpayers money to line the pockets of the rich. I hope everyone has purchase emergency food, water and ammunition (and that is not alarmist, its realist)

In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the... Anyone? Anyone?... the Great Depression, passed the... Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered?... raised tariffs, in an effort to collect more revenue for the federal government. Did it work? Anyone? Anyone know the effects? It did not work, and the United States sank deeper into the Great Depression. Today we have a similar debate over this. Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone seen this before? The Laffer Curve. Anyone know what this says? It says that at this point on the revenue curve, you will get exactly the same amount of revenue as at this point. This is very controversial. Does anyone know what Vice President Bush called this in 1980? Anyone? Something-d-o-o economics. "Voodoo" economics.

Continued from The last line: yes, read it again:

Those institutions that Paulson, the majority of the fed / treasury historicaly come out of, the "shadow banks" if you buy into that (I really dont) that have taken over the companies with the biggest exposure (Lehman, Baer, Wamu, Wacho, etc) will be able to sell their assets for as high as they want. Whereas everyone else pretty much has to grin, sell at high prices, take the losses, and probably go under.

Who survives? Paulson's friends and all the come out as among the only insitutions left.

Among all the crummy stuff in the bill -- this scares me the most. You know me, I really don't buy into all the conspiracies, but this provision to the subsection is just insane. THIS WILL BE DEVASTATING TO THE BILL AND ALL THAT VOTE FOR IT.

    700 Billion Dollar Bill

I am so disgusted with our government and will vote for anyone but and incumbent this election! I am watching C-Span right now and I am just amazed at the democrats that are on now. They are laughing and joking and breaking their arms patting themselves on the back at what a good job they did passing this bill. What they seem to forget is most of them are career politicians and they created/allowed this to happen in the first place - bipartisanly! They state they saved the American people and did the best they could with the bad hand they were dealt. What they forget is they were doing the dealing for all these years.

    Sorry I don't get this

Last week all anyone on this site coulds say was along the lines of "this bill MUST pass to protect, blah blah, blah", "It's not a bailout" etc

All that I can see that has happened in the interim is that a little bit of pork has gone into the bill and now the bill as a whole is suddenly bad throughout and back to being a bailout?

There were also a few other bits added about how golden parachutes would be banned but that doesn't seem to make the news

Personally I have always thought the bill was a bad plan and have yet to see a version which I feel won't do more harm than good, but I find it odd that peoples attitudes have swung so completely when the root of the bill stays the same

Feels to me like you're all being played...
