Techdirt Podcast Episode 14: Do You Need A Proprietary Platform To Be A Serious Media Company Today?

from the content-(management)-is-king dept

Techdirt has long operated on a homegrown content management system, but while we've been considering a switch to something open like Wordpress, many other media companies have been building their own proprietary platforms. What are the pros and cons of each approach, and are proprietary platforms necessary to be a "serious" media company in today's landscape?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Please leave Techdirt the way it is. Some of us can't use Disqus or Livefire, and/or hate the thought of having to log in through Facebook or Google.

      Re:

Don't worry, we don't intend to move our comment system into something third-party like that, nor would we ever require those forms of login (we wouldn't mind offering them as an option for those that want to use them). And we are committed to retaining the ability to comment fully anonymously, partially anonymously, with an account, etc. with no restrictions.

That said, I can't promise we'll "leave Techdirt the way it is" -- there's a lot we'd like to do to grow and improve this site.
