Techdirt Podcast Episode 154: Truth, Trust, Transparency And Tribalism

from the panel-discussion dept

A couple of weeks ago, Mike was in Washington, DC for the State Of The Net conference, where he participated in a panel called Internet Speech: Truth, Trust, Transparency & Tribalism. For this week's podcast, we've got the audio from that conversation with all sorts of interesting ideas about how people are dealing with fake news, trolls, propaganda and more.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Truth? Not wanted!
    Trust? Fuck You, that's what!
Transparency? Mind your own fucking business!
Tribalism? Hell yes, my sheep vs your sheep keeps them very busy! Step into my office while we discuss things while the flocks bicker!

Well, you left out "Treachery" of multi-national corporations which intend to be gatekeepers on all speech, but that's typical Techdirt terseness.

"Download Truth, Trust, Transparency & Tribalism"
Simply doesn't work with javascript, so THERE'S A PRICE TO PAY: privacy. You'll get uniquely ID'd and tracked all over the web. TRACKING is another drawback not mentioned at the conference, because They gain money from it!

    Foiled there, so tried:
"Users who like Truth, Trust, Transparency & Tribalism"
    NONE
"Users who reposted Truth, Trust, Transparency & Tribalism"
    NONE
"Playlists containing Truth, Trust, Transparency & Tribalism"
    NONE
"More tracks like Truth, Trust, Transparency & Tribalism"
Only one from "Cracked", apparently the humor magazine, which certainly is right category for Techdirt.

And gain, would Techdirt please state how many times downloaded / listened to? Inquiring minds want to know.

This coming from the schmuck who makes himself identifiable in the most obnoxious way possible. A planet of TOR IP addresses couldn't hide your blue backside from a two-year-old.

Listening to this podcast, I feel like when I believe Dr. John Samples
spoke people's reactions were like "uh, ok, and on to the next thing", lol.

This is not saying his opinion is not worth hearing just that his opinion in this setting seemed to not contribute to the discussions in the podcast.

The ambassador and CATO guy spent the conversation talking past each other through a 20th century lens. Mike and the professor (band name) were making points about the actual internet. .
