The other day I went to the cinema to watch the Avengers.
The anti-piracy warning came on saying Sites like pirate bay are killing the cinema experience...then shows a video of an empty cinema with dusty seats.
An elderly lady sitting next to me said to what I presume was her grandson "So whats this pirate bay?". He replied "it's somewhere you can get free movies and stuff"
and she replied "oh, thats nice".
Just another person 'educated' about the evils of the pirate bay. I found it hard to stop myself giggling.
Rapidshare and a host of other lockers went "user only" and removed sharing from their systems, so now the competition to Megaupload has been pretty much killed stone dead...
Now he just needs to get the data back, run an IPO and make 10's of billions pure profit.
(I believe the estimates for the value of publicity for all this runs into hundreds of millions of dollars of free advertising for Megaupload).
Heheh that was hilarious....shares in German companies have crashed to all time lows and the German government has seen its popularity drop by around 30%.
Oh yeah and tens of thousands of Germans lost their jobs...all because of the copy maximalists....
I am a moron. I am in a hurry. I thought "creative america" was "captain america" on first glance.
I therefore demand that creative america be shut down and gives hundreds of millions of dollars to DC comics (or marvel (or whoever) just so they get punished).
If you tip the public too far, basically a massive mob of millions of people turns up at your corporate HQ and burns it to the ground......this is a war the MPAA and RIAA cannot possibly win, they just haven't realized it yet.
It all goes swimmingly, as the RIAA sets up a facebook page and a twitter account, then refuses to let anyone except the heads of the major record labels follow them.
THEN they sue a member of the public who accidentally gets added to their friend list for "copyright infringement" when their PC displays the RIAA's wall....
If this passes, then really we should make the official government page say how they want to turn back the clock and start putting people into death camps again.......
Except in the Italian version of Techdirt, I'll make Mike change your comment to "I give a shit...in fact this is the most important thing in my life, so I dumped my wife, put my kids in an orphanage and shot my dog just to concentrate on this".........
How long before someone makes a firefox/chrome plugin that everytime you visit ANY site, throws out a load of random searches for uranium, nuclear tech, death to the west, terrorist training camps etc.
If you fill government servers with enough crap every single DNS request would contain thousands of items of crap...good look filtering through that to find whats real.
That taking down mega upload originally had nothing to do with piracy, and everything to do with the RIAA and MPAA stealing legal content which can then be "re-worked" into songs / movies etc to turn a tidy profit.....
They want the evidence destroyed so badly so that no-one can say "HEY!!! I created that video clip / song"....
Side effect BTW of "losing" the video evidence, is that Dotcom can now pretty much claim anything he wants happened during the raid...people getting beaten with rifle butts, sexual abuse of others in the property, hell he could even claim they shot his dog because it wouldn't stop yapping.
Maybe its time for a FRAND type system on educational materials? Where they must be licensed and sold for a "reasonable" profit, not a 65% markup (and other companies may license the entire contents for resale again for a "reasonable" fee)
I'd say reasonable would be around 5-10% max, decreasing by 1% per year if there isn't at least 50% new content.
The best thing the RIAA / MPAA could offer would be someone who doesn't screw up every single business they touch...because by christ they've proven thats the most scarce thing in their entire organization....
