Personally I see the existence of the various different types of CC licenses as a plus - because it maximises the number of people who will be involved in free culture.
No, they maximize the number of people involved with Creative Commons. They may be reducing the number of people involved with Free Culture. Creative Commons is not a Free Culture organization, and has no mandate to promote Free Culture. They do, however, offer some Free Culture licenses along with their more popular, more restrictive ones.

I think I'm so sophisticated
'cos I'm living my life as a
good homo sapiens.
But all around me
ev'rybody's multiplying
And they're walking
round like flies man.
So I'm no better than the animals
Sitting in the cages in the zoo man
'cos compared to the
flowers and the birds
And the trees
I am an APEMAN.
I think I'm so educated
and I'm so civilised
'cos I'm a strict vegetarian.
And with the over
population
And inflation and
starvation and the crazy politicans.
I don't feel safe in this world no more,
I don't want to die
in a nuclear war.
I want to sail away to
a distant shore
And make like an APEMAN.
I'm an APEMAN
I'm an APE
APE MAN
Oh
I'm an APE MAN.
I'm a king-kong man
I'm a voodoo man
Oh
I'm a APE MAN.
'cos compared to the sun
that sits in the sky
Compared to the clouds
as they roll by
Compared to the bugs and
the spiders and flies
I am an ape man.
In man's evolution he has created
The cities and the
motor traffic rumble
But give me half a chance
and I'd be taking of my clothes
and living in the jungle.
But the only time that
I feel at ease
Swinging up and down in
the coconut trees.
Oh
what alife of luxury to
be like an APE MAN.
I'm an APE MAN
I'm an APE
APE MAN
Oh
I'm an APE MAN.
I'm a king-kong man
I'm a voodoo man
Oh
I'm a Ape MAN.
I look out of the window
but I can't see the sky
The air polution is a
fucking up my eyes
I want to get out of
this city alive
And make like an APE MAN.
Come and love me
be my APE MAN girl
And we'll be so happy in
my APE MAN world.
I'm an APE MAN
I'm an APE
APE MAN
Oh
I'm an APE MAN.
I'm a king-kong man
I'm a voodoo man
Oh
I'm a APE MAN.
I'll be your Tarzan
you'll be my Jane
I'll keep you warm and
you'll keep me sane
We'll sit in the trees
and eat bananas
All day just like an APE MAN.
I don't feel safe in this world no more,
I don't want to die
in a nuclear war.
I want to sail away to
a distant shore
And make like an APEMAN.
You don't have to support the artists, but if you are going to enjoy their efforts, you really should support them. That means listening to their music via licensed sources (radio, example) or buy buying their stuff via Itunes or whatever.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You have obviously never tried making money through those licensed channels. You crack me up.
I'd heard that some people really hated atheists, but it was always a vague, abstract concept. Now it's real. The hate in those comments blows my mind.
I'd totally go to a photography exhibit called "no apparent esthetic value." Especially if the "non-esthetic" photos were displayed next to "esthetic" ones, according to the police.
I'm curious, Nina: who in the world were you picturing as asking the question?
Every struggling artist/musician/photographer/writer who thinks copyright (which is only a right to exclude, not a right to get paid) will make them money.
And Lewis Hyde, who asserts over and over in Common As Air, "If there is no way to exclude, then there is no way to make money" (p. 55) Which may explain why that book, and his excellent older book The Gift, remain under restrictive copyrights, and why Hyde supports IP monopolies as long as they're "limited." Common As Air contains a lot of excellent history and philosophical inquiry, but its vision is muddied by that unquestioned, false assumption which is presented as an axiom.
As far as I know, the "rights" belong to me, and were merely "licensed" to the DI and Comic News. So go for it - share everywhere. If there were some legal mechanism I could use to Free all "my" copyrights, I'd use it. Until then, please take my word for it. Thanks.

Actually it wasn't. The rhetoric was always there, though.
