My friend got a pirated screener copy of Juno and I thought it was hilarious because it still had the anti-piracy warning attached. Also the movie was fairly entertaining.
Also, even if they did pirate the book (and maybe even a few updates), if they enjoyed it they may decide to pay for it anyway to show their support for the creator, just like with every other type of piracy. (Well, digital piracy anyway.)
And if I could pirate lunch and printer ink the same way as digital media, I would.
On a side note, I feel like stating the obvious. Piracy != Lost sales. For example, in my junior year in high school, me and my classmates all played a pirated copy of Halo a lot. Consequently, when I had some spare cash I went out and BOUGHT a copy. Had I not already loved the game from playing it so much, I would not have bought it. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Just think about it.
What? No, you can't do things like that Mike! It's that sort of thinking that caused the swine flu, supports raporism, and will cause the sun to explode prematurely.
The way I see it is this. AT&T and the like are gatekeepers and they can stop you, but Google is just the guy standing on the corner giving directions. If he doesn't give you directions, there are lots of others doing the exact same thing.
