Actually... they seem to wield a significant amount of authority - I bet if we just broadened the legislation to modify their duties to take place in any place, not just on roads, sidewalks, ports, airport, bus depots, express checkout lane in grocery stores and probably a couple I missed, I bet they could make sure people do the right thing. All the time. Everywhere. In complete compliance.
They could make sure people use the appropriate amount of toilet paper, chew the right number of times and even brush in the proper fashion!
I still wonder why a people-minded group of philanthropists hasn't gotten together to fund congress so that they no longer need industry money? Imagine if the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation or Warren Buffett turned a small portion of their immense wealth and just gave it to the greedy politicians in exchange for one simple thing - that they no longer accept any form of donation or compensation now or in the future from any industry group. Period.
I don't think they are idiots - I think they are out of touch.
It isn't to say they are not a lot smarter or talented than I am, but if we limit our information, we limit our ability to make decisions with contemplation.
If you never listen to a contrary point, you ignore wisdom. A decision or opinion that is made without information is not an informed decision or opinion.
This is why I like to engage in conversation with people who don't think the way I do. I'm also open to changing my mind.
It's kind of funny, but it's because there are so many 'trolls' here that I like this site - the amount of effort that goes into some of the comments arguing against the trolls provides some very good background, but I have found cases where the trolls also had some good points. If the trolls weren't here, I think I would get bored of everyone having the same opinion and leave.
Not the same thing. This is why they use the term 'license' instead of 'ownership.' The argument being they have never transfered their right and as such you did not actual 'but' the software - you just rented it.
That sounds fair to me - you need to renew your license, so it makes sense that if the government is granting you a monopoly, you should have to jump through hoops to keep it.
There are already similar principles in existence today - for example, if a company does not defend its trademarks and copyright, the courts can take it away because it is deemed 'abandoned.' This would just entrench the principle and provide jobs - someone would need to maintain the records after all.
I would really like to see a list of those who support SOPA/PIPA. I've seen the list (partial as supplied) of those against it, and I am curious as to who is on the other side.
He is from Boston... there is a reason the town has a rep... :P
I first heard about this through @unmarketing on twitter - and I was a little gobsmacked at how much work this guy put into ruining his name (not a good name to begin with mind you).
It takes a lot of effort to be that rude. It is just so much easier to actually care about your customer, and you will sleep better. (And no internets will run you over... and set you on fire...)
This whole thing is driving me nuts - soon people are going to be getting sued (right or wrong, as they say, is for the courts and a lot of money to decide) for stuff that just doesn't make any sense - imagine your kid making a video of them playing with Lego only to have Lego turn around and sue you because they say you shouldn't make a video of their product without their permission. Now, we all know this is silly, but it would actually make it to court and cost the poor kid's family a ton of cash to fight something totally ridiculous... but what is the alternative? The courts require you to show up with a lawyer or they think your are disrespecting them and they will teach you a lesson.
It's scary. And it seems more and more where we are headed.
The swiss have already bent to US demands in regards to account information regarding US citizens - they would cave to this as well. I hate to say it, but do you want to know who wouldn't bow to the US? China. (Man, my mouth tastes bad saying that...)
