Re: Re: Hit it on the head, possibly not like they thought
Who says it has to be just one? With infinite distrubtion available at little or no cost via the Internet, why couldn't a dozen or even hundreds of "creators" be supported? As Mike has said before, one of the likely biggest growth areas going forward will be in creating the filters that people use to parse through all of the available content. For now, that's things like your "friends" on Facebook and Twitter and personal recommendations. As the recommendation engines get better, we'll see companies popping up to help in that regard. I'm eager to see it happen and yet scared of how Hollywood will try to "kill" it before it gets here.
This falls in line with a thought I had the other day. I figure there's about 1,000 people in Hollywood who are directly involved in trying to control what and how consumers watch movies. These are the people with the ability and power to control the direction of investments, lobbying, etc. I'm also thinking that there are about 150,000,000 consumers in the US alone who want to watch the occasional movie. Thus, 1,000 people are trying to control the desires and wants of 150,000,000 and force them to regularly do things in ways that they don't want to. To me, it seems that in the end, the 1,000 in control are going to have about as much luck succeeding as if they'd been herding cats - in other words... none.
The new concepts are here and the genie is out of the bottle. No amount of wishing is going to put it back. The best they can hope to do is to either quickly move out in front of the crowd, get out of the way and thus left behind, or get trampled into nothingness. So far, they seem to bo going for a trampling.
"I am 100% opposed to SOPA and PIPA, even though I'm one of the artists they were allegedly written to protect. I've probably lost a few hundred dollars in my life to what the MPAA and RIAA define as piracy, and that sucks, but that doesn't come close to how much money I've lost from a certain studio's creative accounting."
(emphasis mine)
See, there you go tossing out facts to totally prove their point. From 1998 to 2008, the music and movie industry* lost 10 THOUSAND jobs and 3.5 BILLION dollars. And you say laws loke SOPA/PIPA aren't needed. Seriously folks, can't you see the truth here????
* the "music and movie industry" only includes "Performing arts companies". Those other entries on the chart are misclassified entries.
I think the bigger question is why would someone choose to start a new company in the USA vs somewhere else. In the US, there's an incredibly large chance that you'll get sued out of existence (Veoh) as soon as you start to be perceived a threat. If you're not sued over patent infringement, there will likely be a copyright claim or a trademark issue. And if, by some miracle of fate, you manage to avoid all three, don't forget to prepare for the inevitable class action lawsuit when someone gets offended by your product for whatever reason.
To be honest, I can't see why anyone would even want to try...
I think WB is just trying to help consumers struggling in the tough economy.
See, since we have to wait 56 days after the DVD is released before we can rent the movie and see if we like it, the chances that the movie has fallen into the $5 bin at Wal-Mart is significantly increased. Thus, WB is just trying to make sure that we pay the lowest possible price for movies.
LMAO... you're still sticking to the falsehood that SOPA only applies to foreign websites? We all know that's not true and based on past history of the DMCA, absolutely not the limit of how SOPA will be used.
But don't you see... the judge is just helping out by providing guidance to the lawyers. Issuing a contempt citation wouldn't be proper guidance so that's why he's not doing it....
The major difference between you and your evil twin is that you have government issued ID and a "paper trail" that can be used to back up your story. When is the last time you saw a 14 year old with a utility bill or a drivers license?
To be honest, this smacks of the "quick to report" story of Nintendo and Sony pulling their support of SOPA from a few days ago. Everyone is so ready to believe that ICE is truly evil when we really don't have all the facts. For all we know, the local police that did the initial lookup on the name are the ones that led ICE down the path of deportation:
Hey ICE, we've got a "Maria Gonzalez" in custody here and according to the computer she's got a warrant out for her in Columbia. Can y'all come on down and take care of this for us. There are no prints or pictures on file so we added them from the girl in custody. KTHXBAI.
I'm just trying to point out that maybe we should hear some of the details before we lynch. Once the details are released, lynch away. Until then... maybe take a step back for a second and stop screaming "but, but, but... FOR THE CHILDREN!!!"
/father of a 14 y.o. boy who could pass for 20+
//seen the crap modern teenagers try
///apparently was a teenager myself once...
In other words, yeah, ICE screwed up, but the girls certainly didn't help matters by lying in the first place. Her bad choice of name started the ball rolling and I'm guessing she didn't do much to help reveal the truth until the process was well underway.
While the end result is outrageous, I don't think ICE is totally at fault here. The fake name the girl provided was for a 22 year old. At that point the police and everyone after was under the impression they were dealing with an adult criminal. If you've got an adult in custody, why wouldn't you deport them?
LMAO... you actually think there will be reasonable debate if things were to move forward? Let me guess, you didn't watch the SOPA markup hearings from the House Judiciary Committee. That was a prime example of the "debate" we would get in the Senate.
If you think about it, that means that technically Windows should be considered illegal under the law because it includes both Notepad and implements a hosts file. Technically, when used in combination, they are tools for circumventing a block.
Yes, they do risk a Constitutional challenge. They also know that the court system will take at least 2-3 years before an appeal to the Supreme Court is even close to being ready. In the mean time, they'll be pushing for the next level of control. It's an endless cycle of greed for these jerks* and someday soon, it will all come crashing down around their heads. Personally, I can't wait... :-)
* jerks: Not the word I'd use face to face, but technically, we're in public... lol
They're hoping to get control and leverage. In other words - "pay up or we shut you down" or any other way you care to describe what is becoming legalized extortion.
What I'm seeing is that the bulk of the support for SOPA/PIPA is corporate level support. Unfortunately, that's what a lot of the Congress-critters are listening to these days. This makes it even more important that you call/write/contact your legislators and let them know how you feel.
I've sent messages to every candidate and sitting elected congressman that support for this issue will automatically garner a vote for their opponent because it's obvious they don't understand their job of supporting and defending the Constitution.
