I would never have bought a Kindle, but I got one as a gift. so, for me the practicality of buying books on it is increased. the only books I am hesitant about are, like you said, more technically based books. I am a culinary student, in addition to being a full time programmer, and can't see buying my school books on kindle...
I am learning Food safety in school, and one problem is that for (biological) safety, the cheese has to be above 135 degrees Fahrenheit. A temp of 71 C is 160 degrees, not an unreasonable safety level.
The problem with cheese is it is thick, and sticks to things (in case you weren't sure :) ), which would cause the temperature to intensify when exposed to the skin.
There are others who don't listen to the complaints of the public. At least they responded with something other than an obfuscated statement. They fixed it.
Makes a certain amount our sense this way. Pretty smooth move on the part of the patent troll. If they donated the patent to the charity or assigned partial income to them, it really gives them a lever to use in settlements, forcing companies to settle, so they don't have the PR of ripping off the poor abused children.
What are they doing suing them in the first place. Even if the Restaurant called itself "The London Underground", used a subway train in the logo, and decorated the restaurant like a subway station, there is still no reason for them to sue.
How many people are going to go to the restaurant and ask when they can catch the next "A" train.
Seriously! Things like this is why people think lawyers are stupid a***oles!
The point has been brought up, but I have to say, this guy looks through "threat" glasses. He sees the threats we need to deal with, but not the 99.99999% of people who are passing through airports that aren't.
I understand that for safety sake we need to pay some prices, but someone needs to look at the problem, to find a way that deals with people, not with threats...
Re: DRM doesn't work -- UNLESS you control the hardware.
I can't speak for Mike, but my perception of what he means is that DRM doesn't work because it does not stop the movies from being available.
For a history of that, put any amount of effort into finding any movie (or music). They are out there. It just takes one person buying the disk (for example), then using the analog whole to copy it and make it available. Then folks who want it bad enough just find it. The DRM did not stop that, and can't.
I live in FL, and FPL does this. They use a 3rd party processing service (Western Union Speedpay), and Western Union charges $3.25 to make a payment (with a $400 limit, if you want to pay more, you have to break it up). There are alternatives of course, you can pay by giving them your bank info, or by cash in person, or check/money order by mail...
Sucks, but beats having to do one of those with the waste of time, etc...
I am on my second T-Mobile Android. I had the G1 and now the Vibrant. This really surprises me because they have always had a more customer-centric viewpoint than the other carriers. At least they were honest about it, and in that way, allowed you to make the choice of a phone that did not have this "feature" (judgmental air-quotes intentional).
I have an android phone (my second actually), and before that used Windows Mobile phones... I have a ton of apps installed, none that are paid, but I have no objection to the ad-driven ones... The only one I use on a regular basis is the SMS app. I like Handcent better than the pre-installed one. I use the built in browser, and a few others, but that is about it.
I use the games and e-book reader apps when I have down time. I used to carry a book with me all the time, but now it is unnecessary. Just fire up the phone, and play around...
