So anyone at MSU can be charged $100 just for being accused of file sharing copyrighted material? Seems to me a good racket to get in on. Find the block of IP's that the students are assigned, start writing bogus letters that say this IP at this time bla bla bla was sharing and make a $100 bucks off of it. Rinse/repeat ala 20,000 times per year.
That's the real tragedy here. We prop up things like college degrees and professors in our society as if they're the most important thing in the world. That is until you realize that most are morons such as is exampled here.
But here's the thing. The game with or without this "feature" will be pirated no matter what. Just like every game out there is. Instead of PISSING OFF your LEGIT CUSTOMERS, how about the company focuses on taking care of paying customers and giving them a product they WANT to pay for?!
I know! Novel idea, but someone had to come up with it. Oh wait, that's right someone did...Stardock and companies like them. Go figure. That's what this is all really about, focus on paying customers and taking care of them, NOT the pirates. Because now I can pirate this game and get a BETTER product than I could if I had bought it.
I get all the cool games just a little while later when the price drops.
Whether you pay $50 for C&C4 or $5 you still can't play it without an internet connection. Nor can you play it in years to come when they decide to shutdown their servers down due to lack of people on them. Either way you wasted your money, just less of it.
Working in I.T. I wish I could get paid a small royalty every time a user uses a PC I deployed to them whether I was at home, on vacation in Costa Rica or at work. Sure would be nice....
I never claimed the copyright holder is the artist.
Really? You claim this but then say:
I'm simply saying that a lawful holder of a valid copyright should have the right to refuse permission for their work
Somewhat of an oxymoron there when it comes to the vast majority of copyright situations out there. Tell me, why should I have to pay Michael Jackson or his relatives to be able to play a Beatles song? Seems kind of stupid to me. But yet that's the case. Point is, copyright as it stands today is completely broken and needs to be redone in a bad way from the ground up.
but the idea of a copyright holder determining usage of his/her work in that period is completely acceptable to me.
Unfortunately for your argument, you assume the copyright holder is the artist, which both in this case and most others is NOT true. MJ didn't refuse use of anything because he's DEAD.
I don't think he was talking about sites currently under a paywall. He was referring to all of the large outlets of news that are currently FREE and want to put up a paywall as if that somehow magically makes their information more valuable than it currently is. Way to really miss the point though, if you're gonna do something you may as well go all the way.
[puppydog voice] Thats a good lil brainwashed liberal hack. You keep spouting your left wing talking points and maybe some day your overlords will pat you on the head. [/puppydog voice]
...knowing that dangerous driving is going to happen...
Driving over the speed limit != Dangerous driving. I can't tell you how many roads I've been on that have artificially LOW speed limits like 25 or 35mph when they could easily be 40 or 50mph and still be safe. They're only that low to allow for revenue, NOT SAFETY.
Must be nice to be perfect and to NEVER break the law, even when that means never going over the speed limit by even 1mph. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone...
Rather than installing an app that tells you where the traps and cameras are, wouldn't it be easier if the ridiculously low speed limits that are posted for revenue generation and not safety were raised to a more reasonable level?
