So when judge 1 did it there were gonna be what 4 0's on the settlement...
Now that the appeals court piled on how many more 0's does that add to the eventual settlement?

"made mistakes"
No a mistake is something you do accidentally.
This is corporate theft.
They know there is no penalty for what they have done, they control the government "oversight", & they will just find another "mistake" to make up their loss of stolen revenue.
It would be nice if someone finally audited what was happening with the billions in dollars the corporations have been gorging on, promising to improve things while making things much worse.

One could tell if there was a skimmer on gas pumps/atms by scanning for bluetooth in the immediate area.
While this is just rolling out in Egypt... why do people think its not been deployed here?
We "accidentally" broke the law and recorded all of your calls is it that large a leap to we dispatched someone to attach a sticker in a wheel well & then tracked them all over.
How does one scan for these without expensive toys?

We shouldn't have to pay for them for doing nothing but creating a PR stunt grabbing headlines for having done something.

Its free speech when we call you an invading horde of unwashed terrorists... but if you call us an unkind word, that is the sin.
I am saddened that a court awarded her a single thing, submitting her own tweets about what free speech really means should of destroyed her case.
But then DoubleThink is a thing, holding 2 completely opposite views as truth.

IIRC the magical registration & replacing the original image with one bearing the copyright notice happened after he retained a lawyer to make bajillions off a picture he posted online.
If your lawyer says do this, change that, then we get paid & you still retain him... you deserve everything you get.

Drugs are bad, mmmmmmmmmmmmmkay?
Missing from the part you read is the fact that he put this image up, celebrated it going viral, then saw a chance to extort a buck, took down the original & replaced it with one with a copyright notice. Then they tried to sue everyone.
So an image without a notice is now magically "edited" to knowingly and deliberately steal from this idiot who copied someone elses idea. Claiming extra damages for knowingly removing the copyright notice from an image that at the time had no such notice... isn't that a lie told to get a windfall?
That Anonymous Coward (profile), 22 Nov 2019 @ 10:39am
We give them sticky gold stars for results, not for making sure they follow the rules.
Everything is a game & all that matters is the wins.
There is no actual accountability in the system, we talk about it, we generate reports, but nothing changes.
We need to stop demanding only wins, punish them when they cut corners & actually repair the broken systems we've cheered the creation of.
That Anonymous Coward (profile), 21 Nov 2019 @ 1:47pm
He needs better lawyers advising him.
I can totally understand the desire to sue.
I can also see how horribly it would end.
Given he is already fending off death threats against himself & his family I can forgive him making an easy mistake cheered on by well meaning but stupid people to try and stop what he see's as the source generating the threats.
We need a Federal Anti-SLAPP law, it might encourage less of these cases moving forward.

If you are gonna do restraint... make sure its prior.
So a Judge is willing to put the reputation of a good ole boy ahead of the law of the land.
Sure they can get a fair trial... they can't even depose the head of the company who claims he knows nothing about birth no babies Ms. Scarlet.
We don't need to think about that there hippie anti-slapp law from commie california, we're gonna pretend this is all about imaginary harms that don't even have a law covering them in this state.
Perhaps its time to rethink that whole job for life & consider that sometimes cranky old men aren't wise... they are just cranky.

At some point we really need to demand actual evidence.
Not just we think, well maybe, blah blah blah... actual evidence of what any of these programs have done that justify them.
Pretty sure there aren't any, consider the FBI has to invent terrorism plots to stop but manage to miss all of the white nationalists plotting to shoot places up. They are gathering up all of this data & can only bust a guy who needs to borrow the $40 to send ISIS so he can star in the show trial of providing material support.
We have to do this or the terrorists win!!!
I suggest the terrorists have won, because we have lost so many of our freedoms in this quest to be safe from boogeymen & shadows.
We need had factual proof that this has lead to anything other than giant checks paid to corporations selling us tiger repelling rocks & maintenance costs to keep the rocks in tip top shape.
Shall we finally accept that to be safe we allowed them to violate the law & our rights were the first casualty of this imaginary war.

Re: Re:
Using alleged opens the door for sparky the newly minted wonder lawyer just didn't know the rules or how things worked. He didn't mean to bald face lie & file briefs telling the court to fsck right off, b/c they had no right to demand he prove his claims with evidence beyond he said so.
There are ways to fight back against contempt, but other Judges are loathe to deal with it... it has to be really outrageous.
Nothing the Judge in this case did is anywhere near being out of line, he was given every chance to not screw up (way more than we'd ever get) and his actions showed a lack of respect & candor.
He claimed fact A, when asked to prove fact A ignored that multiple times & suggested the court didn't have the right to ask for proof of fact, he then allowed contempt fines pile up & did nothing... then the fines were increased even higher... and he STILL didn't file anything. He showed up in court b/c he finally realized that the Judge was done & would have him arrested to appear. He brought it another lawyer to plead his case that he's just a poor misguided caveman lawyer (Google it) who didn't understand our strange modern world... and most likely pissed the Judge off a bit more from her response to the bullshit they tried to feed her. The other opening they could be looking to create is she is biased against him, he's just a young lawyer who made a booboo and she was extra mean to poor him.
