To be fair to Sony it wasn't all bad in the beginning. I am an old school fan of the Play Station and even their walkmans where good. My first MP3/cd player was from them and it worked fantastic for years. So they have decent products, just of late they have really dumb marketing strategy and its turning a lot of people, like me, away.
so what about if I download it in parts from different machines lol...what then??
The title of this heading is a bit misleading considering they said it was for "unauthorized downloads". But this can be abused and i do not think it should be a criminal offence.
Okay...I do understand that but what about my other points that I pointed out.
I have no problem paying for things that I like. I regularly do that to support the people. But my overwhelming point is that I am a customer who is willing to get it by legit means but can't in some scenarios.
In the end of the day I would choose to not have something over pirating it but in both instances is that considered a lost sale? Piracy seems to be "apparently" cause companies to lose money since they did not buy it legitimately (I really don't agree with this as it makes no sense). But if I choose not to pirate and just not bother wouldn't that be cause for a lost sale too??
I always notice perfect legit studies are ignored over the ones that fit more popular opinion. Another thing they do is that they warp figures and get them to bend to their way...
I been reading Techdirt for awhile but I am troubled by a lot of the comments about people and pirates.
1. It seems that anyone who is even slightly associated to piracy is guilty (no matter if its taken out of context). When has it shifted that we assume people are guilty first before assuming they are innocence? Everyone needs to get a chance to prove their innocence but its also not fair to immediately lump someone in the guilty pile.
2. Most of the time the ones pirating (I am talking about games/cams in cinemas etc) are going to be the best customers. They are the ones going out and actually buying the games and going to movies to share. Now I am not saying this is right by any means but its a point most people overlook.
3. How is it any different recording a show on your dvr, vcr (heck even your computer) than downloading a tv show? I have cable (no dvr) but I am never around when most of my shows are showing. I love outside the US so even online things are blocked for me most of the times. So either I do not watch my show or I find another means. People may argue I have a sense of entitlement and I partially agree with you, I should probably get a dvr and record my show and watch it later or don't bother. So my question is what do the tv producers prefer? Because I will happily not watch my show and they will still lose a customer.
4. I don't like piracy but it has its place in the world. I tend to stay away from it as much as I can but there has to be an easier way to get your product (whatever that may be) to a customer (like myself) without me choosing not to bother. In the end of the day ask yourself is someone who pirates and someone who chooses not to bother considered a lost sale?
Finally I do not agree with Ninja Video or the stance they took etc. I think people should be punished for the crime they commit. However the punishment should fit the crime.
Well we all knew you were coming but when has Mike ever put up give it all away and pray... he has actually given criticism against people who do that. What he has said is make sure people have a reason to buy. Given people a reason to buy and connecting with your fans/buyers is the way to go and will generally help you in the long run.
Anyway the whole point of this article is highlight the ridiculous argument of the MPAA. The flippant way the dismiss the arguments to be is quite disturbing and I hope one day they will learn.
I don't support Apple generally. I don't quite like their closed minded ways they have their software and have lived fine without their tech.
However I am troubled by this story for a few reasons:
1. If apple did cross this line then what else have they crossed? It's quite possible lots of coverups happened
2. Its strange for apple to cross the line like this (I know its contradicting above but hear me out). They may be extremely closed and have even come close to crossing the line. However so far nothing has shown that apple will blatently cross the line.
3. Lets face it people embezzle stories to get better press. I am not calling anyone a liar but its just human nature.
So before anyone jumps on the bandwagon of accusing apple lets see how this turns out. I may dislike Apple for how they operate but i can't believe they will go down this illegal route.
Piracy will always be around no matter what you do. It won't be stopped easily and if you have a suggestion then fire away. But what should a developer do? Give up and say well I can't make games cause pirates will steal it. That is an idiotic mindset to have and adopt. Developers and companies need to focus on what is important, the gamers you are designing/programming the game for. I see stories from Ubisoft/EA all the time about DRM this and DRM that but never about what they are providing for gamers to entice and give them a reason to buy. Ubisoft games in the past (Splinter Cell for example) were awesome. I actually bought and played those games. I have yet to buy Assassins creed 2 cause I just don't want to deal with the hassle of DRM. So in essence I am a lost customer and a lost sale so to speak.
Steam is a fantastic example of how people have allowed people to still buy games and actually want to buy them and use it. It is a great example how they bring a great service and they do not focus on how much people Pirate games. Until Ubisoft realizes this and to be frank the only reason they haven't failed yet is there games are still pretty good. Eventually that will degrade and gamers will move elsewhere. Maybe then they will get it through their heads.
Re: Re: I don't think "Friending" is what you think it means...
Who is going to search through all this contact between teachers and students? Your talking about a lot of intel to go through and then its all really subjective in the end of the day...
I agree it may seem highly inappropriate but when I was outside of school and I saw a teacher they would much faster hail me out and say hi and then go on their merry way. So what are we as students or teachers supposed to do? Avoid outside contact entirely?
So why didn't gamestop pull the game when they found out? If you ask me they should have sold the game as used not new. Since someone had already opened the package and taken something out that the manufacturer put in. That should never happen with anything I buy.
My point is while I see your point about not promoting a competitor as you see this has driven much more business to their competitors unintentionally and they look bad in the eyes of everyone.
What about if the means to the internet was the wireless device itself???
I have had in the past my dsl modem was my wireless, so if I unplug it I can't use the internet.
So lets say I do unplug it and then decide all right lets google to see how to close up my wifi. Wait my internet is down. Some user manuals of certain devices are also extremely unhelpful and even me (I work as a programmer) have trouble figuring out how to turn the wifi off on new devices.
The fact is the law should never have been passed and with so many things online and internet is becoming more than just something you use on and off. Its becoming necessary for some to do their jobs. That is what people try are point out...
If cops where tasering everyone they stopped to check then that is another kettle of fish. You usually get so many warnings before they actually use the taser on you.
Second off TSA agents are not cops so thats such a bad analogy.
Finally, I don't even think anyone who read this article will say that what the passenger did was correct. It was very rude if you ask me but as Techdirt tries to highlight all the time. These are the problems with it and the question comes up are these regulations stopping any threats?
People get what is coming to them. Google tried to stop this from going through and in the end the newspapers got more than they had wanted. However I do not hold Google at fault, as everyone who replied to you said "They got exactly what they asked for".
So tough, I hope this is a stepping stone from which other newspapers can see that this will hurt their business in the long run...
Re: "It'll be interesting to see if there's any noticeable impact on purchases in France."
How can you say his predictions are wrong...predictions imply that he knows what going to happen, he is simply saying lets see if there is a noticeable impact. I am also interesting to see what happens
Stop jumping to conclusions like this, if you think something different fine I respect that but don't come with this attitude like oh your predictions are so wrong.
I agree with the approach taken by the woman, protecting a kid from getting molested and scanned like that is fair. (Anyone remember the movie Airplane! with the scanner lol...)
What I don't agree with is the verbal abuse stuff, which is probably why they arrested her in the first place.
It reminds me of the story with the flight attendant and the photo (http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20110705/20381614979/us-airways-employee-handles-complaining-passe nger-tsa-way.shtml)
Alot of these type of protections while I understand that authorities think they are necessary are we really going to keep increasing them? I mean I honestly hate going through Airport Security to the point where I plan what I wear and what I carry on me so that I avoid as much hassel as possible. At the rate we going I expect airlines to give passengers sleeping pills or lock em in cages to make sure they don't do anything bad...
Its very very very easy to say, oh well since they not fighting fair lets not bother fighting fair.
Lets assume for a moment people stop fighting fair and we go after and we silence all these people then what? Another thing will come up and we silence them as well? Its just a cycle that will never end. It comes back to the saying you reap what you sow. If we sow seeds of discord and things like this then we will reap exactly that.
As frustrating as it is to see people blinded by their own opinion that they can't see sometimes we just got to let it go and show them that we won't go down the same road as them.
Another thing is that I prefer discussion on any topic from both sides because if everyone is open minded enough they will get a good view of the opposing side and hopefully it will lead to something better.
So just leave her be and keep calm. She maybe silly but don't ever let anyone get under your skin.
From what I have read the only thing that will be sold on the site is the ebooks themselves. Everything else will be free. From all the extra information that she is adding to all the interaction.
Its easy to lump her into the category of milking the cow but I don't think she is in this case. She is embracing ebooks and making a site to encourage more people to participate.
