In the end they will ask for a government bail out - dam pirates!
In all honesty the cable companies are least trying various business models to make money. I like the Hulu/DVR solution... parents-in-law have never had cable and never will as long it is still free over the air via rabbit ears. No one solution will work for everyone.
Some cable companies show online via clunky user interface embedded a browser with minimal commercials. Hopefully in 5 year the interface will improve and I can watch it just on my TV (with out a computer). Maybe some free stuff and pay for just the channels I watch.... what a novel idea to kill the middle man (local cable companies) to save money for both parties.
The actual movie is not really important. To me the story is Sony is so fearful of piracy that they are willing to take a potential finical loss in a pitifully vain attempt to stop it.
First point is that something good has come from the internet - a torrent of the movie.
Second point is that something good has come from the internet - the demonstration that the absolute fear of technology can have on the non-tech savvy. This clear shows Michael Lynton should not be CEO as he deliberate lost revenue for SONY out of his own personnel fear of technology.
Microsoft Word do this a long time ago with the AutoCorrect feature back in late 90s (IE: Word 7, Word 2003)? Since MS Outlook can use Word as email editor then this feature is used in Electronic Communications System.
I know I put many many short hand items in the AutoCorrect's dictionary. I have even worked at clients that had a custom dictionary full of their internal abbreviations. About 7 years ago we also used there internal abbreviations in the Database to automatically expand out short hand writing.
It seems to me this idea has already been out in the market for at least the last 10 years. And if I go back to the Automatic decoding Morse code machines into English or even the ticker tape machine translator. All these systems used Electronic Communications System and translated the abbreviation (be it Morse code, or every). You could even classify a compression algorithm like ZIP, Kermit, TAR, etc as a way of Resolution abbreviation in a Electronic Communications System.
The USPTO must just stamp things approved and then have the courts waste time and money for the eventual challenges that will occur. In the mean time IBM can sue the crap out of small companies that can not afford a court fight.
Journalists across Canada, as well as bloggers, can now use the defence of "responsible communication on matters of public interest" as a defence against libel.
Excerpt from Supreme Court ruling
The defence of public interest responsible communication will apply where:
A. The publication is on a matter of public interest
and:
B. The publisher was diligent in trying to verify the allegation, having regard to:
* The seriousness of the allegation;
* The public importance of the matter;
* The urgency of the matter;
* The status and reliability of the source;
* Whether the plaintiff's side of the story was sought and accurately reported;
* Whether the inclusion of the defamatory statement was justifiable;
* Whether the defamatory statement’s public interest lay in the fact that it was made rather than its truth (“reportage”); and
* Any other relevant circumstances.
Just submitting material to Vancouver Olympics organizing committee, known as VANOC, means you give up all your rights. You don't get a chance to discuss how it's going to be used or how it licensed. VANOC would 'own it' and you would get absolutely nothing for your work just by showing it to them. A little extreme to say the least. So instead of handing over all her rights to the VANOC Scoffield decided to post her song online instead!
BTW: The lyrics to the chorus of "Sea to Skyway" are:
I can see some good times on the road up ahead
Moment by moment without regret
The world together in the spirit of peace
Drinking hot chocolate under a maple leaf
Upon the sea to skyway…
Going higher and higher and higher and higher.
If only someone could think of a profitable business model offering free creatively commons songs/lyrics/etc to the general public for use typically uses (not resale).
I know many starting artist that would love to be able to easily distribute their music for free if it where only to be heard. Even big artist did this at the start of their career - I can think of one right now: Madonna gave her music to ever DJ and Dance bar she could find just to have her music heard.
Yes and if your neighbors field has Monsanto seeds and they just happen to germinate and/or spread to your field then you are also infringing on Monsanto seeds and need to pay up.
I can not find the case right now but it was in the news few years ago. Some of the Monsanto seed spread into the neighbors fields and after a Seed DNA test that proved some of the crop was in fact the Monsanto seed they where forced to pay up. Given the balance sheet of many farms a legal fight and loss would bankrupt most farms. The evil side of me thinks this would be a good way to bankrupt your neighbors and buy up their land so you could grow more Monsanto seeds.
Lets see the guy allegedly took some property from a company, which happens to be a movie company. So why did the FBI use it's resources?
Second point, just because some closed room marketing assumption about how much money a movie does not actually mean that is the true value... piracy or not.
Is this $30 Million ear marked to go to lobbyists to give to politicians to craft more industry friendly legislation to help fight piracy? Or will is just disappear into the budget of the Justice Department?
Just allow the jury to access court provide internet connect computer where they are clearly told ever action done on them will be provided to the prosecutor and defense and Judge and be part of the form record of the court process.
Blocking VPN or other tunneling techniques would encourage the jury to use the computers wisely.
Let them 'Friend' each other - just have it all recorded so all parties can examine it for faults. In fact create a facebook group for the trail where all the witness, accused, and court staff MUST all join with the Jury.
Yeah mis-trials will be up 1000% but in some countries internet access is a basic human right.
The lesson here is to know where to draw the line. Until that line is known for sure it best to rely upon what you know - lock up the jury and set the guild free right?
I think that is the last thing I would like to see when I do a search for "Tiger Wood's Club", or "Tiger Wood's Stroke", or... oh the list goes on. I guess no more searches about Tiger Wood. So Tiger's tactic of stopping me via fear of what I might find has put an end of my 'Tiger' searches.
I am sure there will even be tons of faked ones out there. I with the tabloids thirst and cash offerings some photo shop creative individual will do a smashing good job to create a passable fake.
I have yet to fully read an ebook... I tried but just could not get 'into it' as I would paper. For me the future for the eBook is not books but other traditional media. I have read magazines and newspapers and for me that is what I want - a drastically reduced rate for an enewspaper only subscription.
