Re: You'd have nothing to whine about IF YOU READ ALL:
I would like to take this moment to point something else out. While they are saying
"the reason music sales have fallen so much recently is due to a general lack of interest and that new albums are simply not particularly good value for money."
When the guys come out puffing out their chest saying "look how much piracy is down in Japan" We can respond with....
"the reason music piracy have fallen so much recently is due to a general lack of interest and that new albums are simply not particularly good downloads."
What I find disappointing about all this though is that even if he wins it is still a loss. Sure he can win and get paid a nice settlement but we the tax payers are paying it. So in the end we have the government trampling on our rights and when we complain they simply hand us back OUR OWN MONEY.
This will not change until they start taking these fines out of the responsible parties salaries.
Hmm, you forget the option of, bitch and moan in blog comments while waiting for things to hit critical point. Sadly I think this country is quickly headed for that point. We have not had a good all out war on American soil lately after all. Good revolution could be interesting.
Not saying I plan on trying to start one, but looking around at how things are and how they keep going... I do not think we have much longer before this government becomes unstable and starts to fall.
That is where you are wrong, I'm not going to vote, and my opinion does count. Sure it does not "officially" count as for who will win, but that does not matter as my vote would not count even if I did go cast it. I would not vote for either guy who has a chance.
It is about like the stupid duck and cover commercials from the cold war. Yeah, you can get under your desk and pretend, but your just wasting your fucking time. Really very similar thing here, sure I could go vote, but it is not going to save me from the hell that is coming.
This whole "you did not vote so you can't complain" argument is such bull shit. Yes I can complain and I will. I don't want either of these guys in office. My voting WILL NOT CHANGE THE FACT THAT ONE OF THEM WILL WIN. So yes, I could go and vote and write in someone or some bull shit. It will not change the fact that one of these two guys will win.
So I am excising my right to not vote for either of them. I will also exercise my right to be vocal about how they are worthless and going to destroy this country, not that there is much of it left to ruin at this point.
"Korea might supplant the US in cultural exports over time."
I think there is a pretty good chance Korea might supplant the US in time.
A while back I was looking a movie to toss on to kill some time and saw "The Man from Nowhere". I saw it was Korean and figured it would be silly and low quality but figured why not give it a chance. I was very pleasantly surprised to find a movie that had production quality to rival anything from Hollywood. Not only was it great production quality, it was a great action film with good acting and down right amazing action sequences. This movie in fact quickly jumped into my favorite movie position. All this despite the fact that it is in Korean and I had to read the subtitles.
Due to that movie I started watching other Korean films and have found them to be better than anything the US is putting out lately. It is a little annoying to read subtitles, but at this rate I'm tempted to learn Korean just to watch their movies.
"just as media companies would doubtless love to make computers running free software illegal."
They might not have managed to make running free software illegal. What they did manage doing is make it so if your using free software you cannot legally enjoy your media. This is one of the big problems I ran into running Linux. In order to watch movies I bought and paid for I have to break several laws to watch them on a linux box. Needless to say my efforts to go "legit" did not last long....
I hold out hope that one day these morons will learn that guys like me do not give a damn about their stupid restrictions. I bought my movie on a bluray and I'm now going to watch that movie when, where, and how I damn well please. Your DRM is not going to stop me, all it will do is piss me off and make me less likely to spend money on a movie in the future.
"Public Citizen, who is handling the case pro bono, is asking for donations to help pay for hiring someone to "sit outside Carreon's house until Carreon appears," noting that he's "carrying through on his promise to run up the cost of litigation.""

I don't think he was trying to say armed uprising is the solution. It is the reason for right to bear arms and I think if we ever reach the point that it is necessary (I certainly hope we never do) then I think you will find the military has less teeth than you think.
The US military swears to uphold the constitution. If the government goes off the rails to the point there is violent uprising then I am willing to bet a large part of the military will fight for the people and not for the government.
Wait.... Your arguing that "pay what you want" is not successful by linking to a story where in reality it worked so well that those getting the money were not ready for it and had to adjust?
Why is it any time "on a computer" is put in front of something all of the sudden those in governments seem to loose their heads?
Can you imagine a government even considering a law that would allow their police to break into peoples homes and destroy things? Even worse, telling their police they can go to another country and do the same?
Yet for some reason "on a computer" it is magically ok.
Yes infringement is illegal, but if you cut me off and I did not infringe then where does that put you? I can download copyrighted material WITHOUT infringing. How can anyone tell for sure if I did or not without a lot more investigation than these guys are going to do?
So I'm rather curious, if I'm paying an ISP for service and suddenly they are not providing said service, isn't that a breach of contract? Seems to me that legally they cannot do what they are planning unless they get all the end users to agree to it. I know this will not stop them, but I do see room for future legal battles over this.
That does seem to be the argument and I find it pretty funny. At my house I have 5 desktops that are always on the network and at least 10 laptops that come and go. All these have 1 public IP address.
So IP address does not tell you much about who actually did the infringing.
That is actually the easiest way. It is easier to cancel your card and get a new one than it is to get your card out of Microsoft's grubby paws, and that is including the pain of having to update your card info in all the other places you actually want to have it.
Talking about Microsoft and their annoying points thing. Anyone else tried to remove a credit card for an Xbox? You see, you can buy the stupid points all day long and you can upgrade to gold or whatever, spend money like it is going out of style. They will never ask for verification to spend money.
When you go to remove a card, there is no way to do it on the Xbox, there is also no way to do it online. The only way is to call Microsoft, and yes I mean their shitty call center in India. You then have to go through more security hoops then you would need to access a bank account. They want your gamer tag, the name on your account, answers to security questions and just about anything else they can drag out. It took me several hours just to remove my damn card from the box so they would quit charging it "for my convenience"

There is no reason that pay what you want would not pay a software engineer just fine. In fact, that is what most MMO games are going to......
