I think I am pretty normal. I have a wife and two young kids so I can't just run to the theater for every movie I think I want to see. Many times, the commercials make a movie sound good (some of them get beaten to death by Comcast on Demand though). But, I can't run out to the theater to see them. Just not enough time in the year. I could sit down at home and watch them, but they aren't available when I'm seeing the commercials. I can't go to the store and buy it, or go to Redbox and rent it either. That movie I'm seeing the commercials for is only available in the theaters. Its because, you know, EVERYBODY can escape their life and run to the theater whenever a new movie is being advertised. When the movie shows up On Demand, I don't know about it, no commercials, so I end up not watching it at all.
I guess they don't want people like me watching movies is all. But, it does save me a lot of money on movies that's for sure. I used to watch a movie every week at the theater when I was young, employed and single. The ones I really liked, I would go buy the DVD. Now I don't do either one of those even though I make a lot more money now. By the time its available to watch, I've forgotten about it or I have to go through all of the PAINFULLY slow lists in Comcast to see if a movie is there in Comcast On Demand. I don't do that much, I have better things to do with my life.
The good thing is that I have a lot more money for other things though (like saving for college for the kids). Well, maybe I should be happy about that or at least the kids will when they get to college.
Before chasing after the group Anonymous, let's put the idiots in jail that put the On/Off switch for the Power Grid on the Internet. I mean how stupid was that? Does somebody working at the power company need to get on a web page from home and turn off the power grid?
Why doesn't NSA actually look into what parts of the power grid can be accessed from the Internet and go "fix" that? Oh Yeah, I forgot, you can't take away any civil liberties if you do that........ You just fix the problem and move on..... And besides, that would make more sense.
What exactly is the requirement for publishing them?
OK, color me just purely not understanding, but I thought there was a way to create sections or specialized portions of Wikipedia. Can't Wikipedia provide a place to "publish" these articles? How about Google? They are trying to scan a bunch of books, why not just start accepting these research papers and making them available online (after they get indexed of course). Imagine the boost that would be, not only are they getting all the knowledge of the past, but also the knowledge of the future. Either location should be a no-brainer. I wish I had the disk space and bandwidth handy. Any body know of a good open source version of Wikepedia like software?
Google AdSense specialists found "numerous pages" with links to, among other things, "copyrighted content," and therefore Google AdSense "will no longer be able to work with you."
Under current copyright law, everything set down in a fixed form has a copyright. Even what I'm writing here (may, depending on whether or not is is just facts) now has a copyright. The vast majority of web pages that Google crawls and indexes (and they store in their archives) are copyrighted.
One thing that many people miss is how complicated it is to design and construct a robotic assembly line for products that have such a short lifespan. "Most" robotic assembly lines can produce one or two products, they are very specialized. For cars, the assembly line design starts almost as soon as the car design is done on paper. Since the life of a new cell phone is at the very most a year (try to go out and buy last year's hot phone, its gone off the shelves). The cost of a fancy robotic assembly line is even more than the cost of the 20%/month turnover. Then it would need to be thrown away to start on the next one after six months.
was way back when in Sim City. You had a certain amount of time to enter a code from a "Key" sheet that was black print on a red background and would copy in a photocopier. If you didn't get the key code in fast enough the game would go on anyway. But, natural disasters would start happening, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes and so on until you just lost the game anyway. Took me a while to make the association since I could play normal for 10 to 15 minutes before the "strange" things started happening.
So, by this ACs definition, 90% of the uses of an AK47 are illegal (yet it seems that the manufacturer can't be found to stop them), and 90% of all torrents are illegal (although I'm sure they really mean are infringing). Yo, AC, where is the data to back that up. Please send a copy to TechDirt subscribers so that your analysis can be verified.
The DOJ has a website that they say points directly to infringing material. Instead of using those pointers to all of that "obviously" infringing material, going to the source and taking it down, they want the search engine to hide it. It will still be there but now "one" search engine just won't see it. BOY IS THIS PROGRESS.
If I had a hammer and used it to hit a nail to hold two pieces of wood together to make a letter "T" (to use the legacy "content" industry model), I would now owe a royalty to the hammer head maker, the hammer handle maker, the nail maker, and the lumber maker. Would I have to also pay a royalty to them every day that I used that letter to advertise my store? If I used it for a while, made a new sign, and sold that letter "T", would I have to pay another royalty. How long does that hammer maker have a hold on all of the things I make using that hammer?
Now as an exercise in "legacy content" thinking, substitute song writer for hammer head maker, composer for hammer handle maker, band for nail maker, and lumber maker for producer, and you begin to see how silly this whole argument gets.
Hi Hilary Rosen,
PLEASE write out 1,000,000 times:
Infringement is not theft......
Your assignment (even though you won't accept it) is to actually learn the meaning of the words theft (to remove property so that the owner no longer has it) and infringement (the improper use of a patent, writing, graphic or trademark without permission, without notice, and especially without contracting for payment of a royalty).
So, stealing ugly clothes you don't like removes the property from the rightful owner. Copying an MP3 file does not remove possession of work from the rightful owner.
It is impossible to solve a problem if you can't even use the correct words to define the problem. No one will understand or care about the problem if you keep saying "Run a Green Light" when the actual statement of the problem is "Run a Red Light". Using the wrong words to frame the problem (especially with a very bad analogy) will not help to move towards a solution.
The one point that keeps going round and round in my head but they never seem to get, is that if Google has the links pointing to all the copies they don't want out there, why not follow the links that actually point to the bad guys and take them down. Instead, they want to take down Google (and every other search engine) to make everything on the Internet harder to find.
What am I missing? Google points to bad stuff for free. Follow free pointer and take down bad stuff. Leave the rest of the Internet alone. Hey, go get started now......
I think Twitter could end up in trouble too. I mean according to AP, quoting more than 4 words without permission and payment means a copyright violation. All someone has to do is quote an AP headline in a tweet and AP can shut down all of Twitter on an accusation. Just because somebody wanted to share a headline.
After we shut down Facebook, Twitter and all those other rogue sites, we can go after the companies that make kitchen knives, matches, of course get those gasoline makers, the ones that make cars should be on the list (how can you commit a crime with no get-away car), and masks, let's shut down the mask makers too and really those criminals are using shoes( NO MORE SHOES, NO MORE SHOES), and for all that is good, please shut down all of the phones, then none of those criminals could talk to each other. We should be able to get a lot of moral panic going around all of these companies that make accessories to crimes. It doesn't matter if anybody uses those for legal things too, just shut them down and stop crime. DO IT NOW!

.... and body cavities, I mean that is where all those bombs, guns and knives are stored now that they have those naked body scanners. So, after clothes are not allowed, everybody will have to have their body cavities sown closed before they can leave the house and walk naked down the street.
McCarthyism is dead, Long Live McCarthyism.........
Now I won't have to dance with my wife anymore for fear of being sued for a copyright infringing dance move. Go white boy go..... OK, just to be clear, I like dancing with my wife, but all my life I have been accused of dancing like a white boy (I am) and badly (even my best friends accuse me of this). But, I'll have a good excuse not to dance now. Also to be clear, is this just a copyright infringement (that is somehow permanently set down in something) or is it also going to be a performance infringement. And, does this mean that there is going to be some dance collection society showing up at my house to make sure the proper fees are collected (maybe GEMA, they like doing stupid things like that whether they cover the artist or not).
OK, let me get this straight. Were I to download/pirate a movie and not pay Hollywood, somehow money magically appears in the hands of somebody who is going to blow up a baby? I am missing something. Did I lose the money? Who gave those terrorist the money that I didn't give to Hollywood? And with all of this money magically showing up for the terrorists because people are not giving money to Hollywood, can I sign up to get some of this free money? I just don't understand how this works.
Will Apple now sure Kelloggs for stealing their idea
I mean Apple the computer people not the Beatles people seem to think they own the entire apple shaped universe (the actual fruit produced by mother nature, not the fruits pursuing these inane lawsuits). Since Kellogg is now trying to claim domain over the entire Mayan cultural imagery, isn't that innovation a step beyond just claiming domain over all somewhat "apple-y" shaped marks? How dare they try to steal Apple's idea of broadly claiming any near shaped trademark? How soon do you think it will hit the courts? Which sparks me to ask, patent cases get filed in East Texas (even if you have to buy a bull), where to trademark cases get filed? Is there a special court that favors existing trademark owners over the new upstarts?
