Re: There is zero NEED for cell phones in school class rooms.
Did you read the article - with an open mind? I doubt it or this would NOT have appeared in your comment:
"There is zero NEED for cell phones in school class rooms. You are there to pay attention to the teacher; not texting or making phone calls. After all passing notes in classes is a no-no too."
Read the quoted passage below all the way through - PLEASE!!
"I used my PDA to take notes and manage homework in every class, and another student in my year often used a tablet computer. The ban was eventually lifted after I graduated, acknowledging the fact that more and more students were using laptops and mobile devices in ways that helped them learn, while I'm sure they still have a no nonsense policy for students goofing off or distracting others. Rules are needed to minimize bad uses, but that shouldn't prevent people from exploring good uses."
No where is anyone claiming that phone calls and text messages should be allowed or condoned. However they do want to point out that today's smart phones CAN help the learning process.
This is a pretty ridiculous statement as well:
"Taking NOTES on an iPhone - ha ha ha."
Actually, you can record the whole lecture/lesson and without writing a word, so you can pay MORE attention to what is being said AND participate in any discussion. You'll have the entire class (with any questions, answers, and dialogue including verbal emphasis and inflections) available to you indefinitely!! There simply is no way a human can write any better or more complete notes.
Take the blinders off and let technology help you rather than wrestling with it because it was never done that way before!
Not in California and many other states - you do NOT need a reason to fire someone. From Wikipedia:
At-will employment is a doctrine of American law that defines an employment relationship in which either party can break the relationship with no liability, provided there was no express contract for a definite term governing the employment relationship and that the employer does not belong to a collective bargain (i.e., has not recognized a union). Under this legal doctrine:
“ any hiring is presumed to be "at will"; that is, the employer is free to discharge individuals "for good cause, or bad cause, or no cause at all," and the employee is equally free to quit, strike, or otherwise cease work.[1] ”
Several exceptions to the doctrine exist, especially if unlawful discrimination is involved regarding the termination of an employee.
You are not a criminal until you actually commit a crime. This guy is proactively preventing "criminal" behavior BEFORE it happens at this particular location.
How thick does your skull have to be to NOT understand this point?
Unless of course you work for the RIAA, then we are ALL criminals - but the charges have yet to be decided!
I do know "Two wrongs don't make a right" (but three lefts make a right!) and "A hypocrite is ALWAYS wrong AT LEAST half the time!", but does it really matter that the guy who steals from others while touting his companies' practically religious moral standards has no ground to stand on and has invaded the privacy of countless numbers of citizens and you are questioning those who brought this to light? Really?
If the people can't tell the difference between the legal and the illegal scammers then why would anyone pay anything, ever? Once in front of a judge, your defense is: "I can't tell if I'm being scammed or not, but neither of these notices look legitimate to me so I kept my money rather than be the next unwitting victim."
I have a classic example that is only several weeks old:
Starcraft II came out recently. I was thinking it may be time for a new game and I was seriously considering buying it. I found my original Starcraft disc and popped it in my computer. Turns out I had uninstalled it. When I got to the license screen I couldn't find my license number for the disc. I contacted Blizzard via email. They asked me to ship them the original disc and packaging AND pay $10 to get me a code for the game I already bought at full retail price the first time around. Considering I had registered my original copy I thought this was a bit much to ask since I already gave them all my info including the number I now need to re-install the very same copy I purchased so long ago.
I've decided NOT to purchase Starcraft II simply based on this experience from a company whose products I REALLY enjoy. So, the loss (my own fault mind you) of my serial number (physical good) and the inability to recover it from my registration with the publisher (which was required to play it at all in the first place) has led me to not purchase the next title which I really wanted.
"You and the left, with your hate, is what is really wrong with America."
"Hello kettle? This is the pot, you're black!"
I'm still not sure when being "left" or "right" meant you were the cause of the problems in this country that has consistently been screwed by both sides of the aisles in Congress, but I can tell you you'd be wrong if you're on either side pointing at the other. YOU are indeed what is really wrong with America because all you're after is winning the "Blame game" and neither "side" has really offered any significant long term solutions.
Follow your own advice and grow up you sniveling right-wing nut bag!!
This message brought to you by an Independent voter that is an equal opportunity hater of both Dem and Reps who think the other side is the problem, rather than really addressing the issues.
You'll never find a case that doesn't have an exception. You, personally, are not the reason the laws are as they are. Using your reasoning: I drive fast but speed has never caused me to have an accident. Therefore, I should be allowed to drive as fast as I want whenever and wherever I want. Your logic simply breaks down and it doesn't take long.
The issue with texting specifically is you are looking away from the road repeatedly and often (usually). This is enough to be an issue already.
The problem with regular phone calls is using one hand (sometimes - seen lots of knee driving!) to drive added to the fact that if you watch someone on a phone call and follow their eyes - rarely do they pay much attention to what they are actually looking at unless they are specifically describing an item or reading to someone. Watch someone talk on the phone and see where their eyes go. If you ask them after the call what they were looking at while they were talking - rarely can they recall anything specific. This combination of inattentiveness to the surroundings and limited control of the vehicle is a recipe for an accident that doesn't require extreme circumstances at all.
I don't mind hands free calls nearly as much and I typically will answer a call using my bluetooth headset. In all honesty, I'd prefer to actually arrive at my destination - then take the call/message. However, if the call is regarding how to get to the destination - then a conflict arises, but it can still be solved by pulling over and taking the call.
Every book should have a digital copy on the inside cover that allows the user to load it onto whatever device they wish!
This saves the buyer all of the scan time and is actually providing significantly more value because you have saved each reader this time. Judging by the survey - half of the readers have at least some serious interest in doing this anyway!
Digital copies are ridiculously cheap to make and should be a great marketing point!
I already know there are those of you who are just waiting to say "But everyone will make copies for free and the book won't sell as well!" I have three replies to that:
1. Prove it!
2. Quit thinking everyone's a thief - they aren't
3. If it were true, then they are already are doing it!
However, the idea here is to try give the customer what they want upfront (remember Business 101?) so they won't need to do this themselves AND the book actually sells thus providing income for the author and all the middlemen!
