Just make it two or three times median income in any given year, recalculate it every five years, it would still be cheaper for the tax payers and would allow those who are elected to be comfortable but not extravagant.
Until we start voting for people who are the best candidate even when there is little chance of them winning, we will be stuck with this crap. You have to view it like planting an acorn, you may not live to build a tree-house in the tree but your grand children will love you for your foresight.
"I guess the real silver lining in all of this is that it prepares kids for SWAT teams kicking in their doors pointing guns everywhere. That is more likely to happen to them than a terrorist hijacking."
It saddens me that I had to mark this as insightful.
So what do they do with their iPhones?
Are they similarly afraid of SMS?
Why are we paying for people to walk documents around that could all be stored on a central server?
Or have they known only too well what the NSA was up to and have been protecting themselves?
"Spooks aren't dumb -- far from it. They do these kinds of analysis -- hell, they hire some of the best game theoretic minds in the world, and always have. Local cops might be power-drunk and unable to see how their actions play out over time; the NSA isn't any of that. They have whole buildings full of very smart people paid good money to think about this stuff. They won't get it wrong. "
They will and did. If they were so smart they would have realized early on what Ed Snowden had in his possesion and moved heaven and earth to make a deal with him to bring him home and stop the releases. Give him immunity throw a couple administrators on the sacrificial altar and move on.
These people are arrogant and believe themselves above the law and incapable of failure.
Blue, you of all people should understand that it is not censorship.
On the once in a blue moon (¿is that where your name comes from?) occasion when you post something that is not full of your usual insults and pointless ramblings your posts remain visible and the community engages in discussion with you in a thoughtful and constructive manner.
Sadly the overwhelming majority of what you write before hitting the "submit" button is full of ad hominem attacks and mindless rants.
Crying censorship when you have demonstrated in the past that you clearly understand the concept and are choosing to be purposefully obtuse only serves to further undermine what little credibility you have and destroys what is left of the respect the community may have for you.

Guardian: done.
