cash and (un)known numbers
Agree - always use cash... and when they ask for a phone number, I frequently use 202-456-1414. Or the number for the local PD. Or their own stores number (which NOT ONE EMPLOYEE has EVER recognized!!)

Need to stop it before it spreads...
... Look at our history here folks. Where would we be if Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, et al had gone around the country and "bricked" every car that every enthusiast "modded". Accel, Crane, Cragar, Edelbrock, Holly, Hurst, Weiand.. NASCAR... none would exist. And most of those mods were done LONG BEFORE THE CAR WAS PAID OFF! Hell, Oldsmobile even bought the parts and put them on in the factory - look up "Hurst Olds" if you don't remember.
You wouldn't have the PC's you have today if it weren't for "modders". Turtle Beach - Hayes - NVidia - all started with boards to "mod" the PC you bought.
So... when did this lunacy start? And who needs to be shot to stop it?

And cyberattacks will happen.
Count on it. Random attacks will happen just to prove that the insurance was needed. There will be stories of payouts from the massive damage (take our word for it... there really was massive damage that no one can see because it has been classified by our insurance company "Cyber Response Action Partner".) Then stories of "This is what happens when you don't have our insurance". Their great-grandfathers from Brooklyn would be so proud.
1) Grocery Stores... I can buy a gallon of ammonia and a gallon of chlorine... 2) Big-Box Stores... I can buy brake fluid and pool shock in major quantities. Know how exothermic that is? 3) Home Improvement/hardware ... They sell Acetone and MEK by the gallon! you know how much fun I have with that stuff?
These folks are WAY behind the curve... there are thousands of possibilities out there that we need to be protected from...
And I just thank God (or Allah or whoever) that they are finally going to protect me from Grandma and her pressure cooker full of cabbage!! That stuff is REALLY explosive...

But the good parts of this...
1) This will completely eliminate overcrowding in High Schools and Colleges. Kids are all pirates anyway and we won't have to hand out scholarship money to those undeserving kids. More for the politicians to hand out to their friends (see #2 below)
2) The for-profit prison industry will become the countries largest business, and keep builders and guards busy for many decades to come. They may even surpass the US at locking up their own citizens. The profits from this venture will enable ever more political contributions (see #1 above)
3) After having been incarcerated for those pesky 20-something's years, they will all come out and immediately start buying copies of every record and movie made that they missed seeing.
They are selling dinnerware, which is part of their primary commerce.
The port authority sells what? other than "renting out" corrupt politicians and law makers as part of their primary revenue source for their commerce... and giving contracts to "favored sons"...
So.. I don't see the confusion in buying a dinner plate vs buying a corrupt politician or major contract ... Even our favorite moron-in-a-hurry can tell the difference...
At least a dinner plate can be used and then cleaned... /sarc
need to know what the numbers from the paper-copy side are... somehow, I suspect that the reality is that it is bookstore 30%, publisher 69.5%, author .5% (after recoup of advance, of course...)
So, this new deal would be totally unacceptable to the publishers. Which is why they are fighting it so hard.
