I think this also all about what we want our Internet data to be... Honest and trustworthy, or insecure and a liar.
It does not take much pondering to arrive at the right answer which also means people can't lie to an honest system.
I am looking forwards to Europe implementing DNSSEC when doing so will kill services like BT's CleanFeed system. The same system that currently denies you access to NewzBin2. I spot some more court fight due there.
What I am currently thinking is that if DNSSEC uses Administrative Denied then this should be avoidable through changing your DNS look-up server.
I think what is most interesting here is that Lamar Smith is a strong promoter of Copyright but on his own website he is using a Creative Commons photo. In other words he is promoting payment enforcement but then using "free" himself.
I am sure there are much artwork protected by Copyright around that would welcome his usage charge.
Naughty Lamar Smith should have credited the artist. Now that is not much to ask considering what a nice free non-commercial use background it is.
It is not often you can read a flame rant outside of the comments section. I can only imagine someone got in touch concerning his critical review of the knowledge of Sandra Aistars.
Little makes me more happy than to see people getting active and reshaping the World while they create. To raise $100 million is very impressive considering that most Net citizens have yet to hear about them.
So they funded 3284 film and video projects which works out as $9888.49 average per project. Let us hope they can pony up some serious funding for very serious people with very awesome projects.
From what I can see the market still has a long way to reshape and to get the right people doing the right jobs to benefit the whole community.
One point of happiness I enjoy these days is Imgur. This website clearly shows a free sharing culture. What is most interesting is that when people upload a photo others with impressive photo editing skills can edit these to make the photos more enjoyable for the benefit of the whole community.
This reflects key attributes of the new market where people join the community and offer their skills simply because they want to where them being part of that community provides its own rewards.
My only concern is that it is a long, long, long way to go before the Internet can turn out something like Avatar. Let us keep in mind one fact though when this $9888.49 average is not far below the budget for the first Paranormal Activity movie.
So what the Internet most needs now is a creative genius to produce a movie of like-standard that uses the Internet to become viral. Then the World and Congress would sit up and take notice.
My personal ISP grudge was that when they laid the fibre optic they did not add extra electrical cable as well. Had they done so then in a power cut they could power up their local generator to keep their cabinets powered and Internet online. Hardly a major extra addition.
Consumer Internet is clearly not a War-time service. That is a shame when my own generator could have kept me online then any locals can check their facebook status and let everyone know they survived the enemy's latest bombing run!
In a real War where the enemy carpet bombs your power stations and Internet hubs then you would have severe loss of many services including Internet. You can say there are backup links but these simply cannot handle the vast population and in a real War they would not have to. If you then wanted to find Internet the best places to go would be Universities, key Governmental Building and even your ISP may have a small link spare at their headquarters.
Most likely after days of repair you can enter the rolling blackout phase of maybe a couple of hours of electricity and Internet a day as they ration the remaining services. Not quite the ideal "do it yourself" Internet survival pack.
I once had my cable modem and router attached to my UPS which combined with my laptop gave me power during a power cut. What happened the first time my neighbourhood plunged into darkness? "Hello Internet? Where are you?"
The answer was my local ISP connect their cabinets to mains power so when the mains go out the Internet is dead no matter your local action to keep online. It is not hard to imagine a nuclear strike taking out power plants and miles of electrical cable.
I was quite upset that my Internet could be lost for days or weeks even in a small War. Obviously a lot of people do not plan that far ahead which makes the Internet venerable. You can read the stories like woman searching for scrap metal cuts through the Internet cable disconnecting the whole country. Who needs warheads when you have crazy old women and fishing trawlers.
You can only wonder why they don't send in their most educated and informed people who can win a debate. Even if this was not a debate you can win you can still make a lot of smoke and noise so no one spots your loss.
Instead if we were all on an aircraft then would you want this woman to be your pilot? "Lets bundle to people and animals in together and what do these buttons do again?"
This does not inspire faith. All the resources of the MPAA and RIAA and they send us a woman who puts the blonde in bimbo.
I think Mike Masnick got himself a crush. All the people and discussion in this debate and he focuses only on her. LOL
Cigarettes are a major source of tax revenue. Counterfeit would basically cover anything the Government does not get its full share of taxes from.
Still if you ask them they are sure to quote old newspapers, mouse droppings and the common added weed killer. I am sure the foreign manufacturer would deny that ingredients list.
I get tired of hearing that one. It is always either "protect the children" or in the name of "public safety".
Most people spot the problem when they buy some paracetamol in Canada only to hear when the get back that these drugs are a public health risk and not being FDA approved makes them potentially dangerous. We must ban such imports to save lives etc.
I have always found one good rule of thumb is that Governments and Health Care systems in general don't aim to fool or poison their population. So when you buy FDA-unapproved Paracetamol you can be very certain that this will indeed cure your headache.
I would go on to say that people putting out false scare stories should be a crime with suitable punishment. It is after all rubbish like this that makes it much harder for people to spot real problems... like former baby milk from China.
I will give up on that idea when they would never make general lying a crime. We can at least identify such "scum" who use such lies to try and fool the public.
What always makes me laugh in a sad way is that back when copyright was 14 years (or 28 years if they lived that long) then a person had to manually travel all over the US by horse and wagon to promote their works. Things moved very slowly what with publishing extra.
As transport has got faster copyright did not decrease to keep the same balance when it did increase instead. Now media can travel around the world in mere seconds but the span of copyright has got longer and longer and longer.
Obviously as distribution got faster allowing for vastly increased sales then so should have the copyright span decreased. You may claim that people live longer now but in the same regard living a longer and healthier life also means the ability to create more media to compensate.
Then in financial terms media under copyright should switch to public domain once the main bulk of sales is over plus a bit extra to ensure the profit point has passed.
So copyright currently being life plus 70 years makes no sense unless that answer is one of greed and control.
I would believe if best if they completely knock off making new laws at this time and instead to focus their efforts to see exactly what is happening.
The old monopolies are gatekeepers are losing out to the independents. Media creation has vastly increased due to the availability of new tools. The majority of people are just happy to share for other people's enjoyment. Independent artists use file sharing to promote themselves and to amass a fan base. All facts show that people are still happy to buy and convenience is a large factor.
So it is only the RIAA and MPAA who are running around screaming blue murder. They are seriously afraid of losing their monopoly which not only explains such laws but also explains why they attack independent channels like DaJaz1 and OnSmash.
Since media creation is doing great, since the old market is still making a good profit only subject to competition, since an Internet revolution is happening, then this is simply not the time or place to try enforcing harsh new market controls.
Maybe one day they will figure out that .com, .org and .net are International domains. If they were US domains then not only would they have US in the title like .us.com but they would also reserve these for US citizens and hosting.
Then good luck in trying to take The Pirate Bay down when there are hundreds of millions of people who would stand in their way.
Even if the US went as far as bombing their Spanish hosting site then they only need to switch on one of their many back-ups.
I would not say that this was all the Bank's fault when it was Congress who forced the Banks to do mortgages to poorer people who could hardly afford it. They want poor people to have the same rights as richer people to get a home even if they were much more risky.
Doing that for years along with over spending is what put the United States in this mess with so many defaulting while the home market prices collapsed.
The banks lost a great deal of money and here we are. At least Congress cleaned up their own mess even if they are not the ones who pay for it.
70 to 90%* of the people didn't want the bank bailouts.
Yet they happened.
I can understand why they did that one. You only need to read the history of The Great Depression to see back then what happened when the Government did NOTHING to help the banks or much else.
A few banks collapsed and this led to a snowball effect with hundreds and then thousands of branches all over the country then collapsing. People no longer trusted the banks who lost their money so they began to horde gold under their mattresses instead.
That is a situation of total economic disaster. This situation lasted for too many years until the Government helped the banks, stimulated the economy and invested in jobs. Not to forget banning gold hoarding should people now be tempted.
So the Government wins that round. What they did early on during this economic crisis is exactly the same as what they learned from The Great Depression.
I can certainly understand why people are upset when helping the banks is like avoiding economic death by attempting economic attempted suicide. Avoiding death in a fire by jumping out a 5th story window.
So it was the lesser of two great evils and I believe life is better off now because of it. The public are not always informed enough to be right.
