I say, let them keep the walls up, and then wither on the vine! We don't need these over-rich, self-righteous, corrupted pinheads telling us what to read and think. They are as dead as the dodo - let them start to realize that, and there may be hope for us all!
A drug trafficker sells or distributes drugs. A drug smuggler transports drugs across international boundaries into a country that has laws against the import of such drugs. A smuggler may be a trafficker, but frequently they are "mules" who are simply transporting the drugs for traffickers, and have no financial interest in their distribution and sales other than what they are paid for moving the product from point A in one country to point B in another.
Were there any repercussions for the police who perjured themselves in court and in legal documents in these cases? My guess? Probably not. IMO, these asshats should be doing serious jail time themselves, besides losing their jobs to "serve and protect" us...
In truth, format shifting is more like being able to wear your socks with shoes, sandals, or boots - or just wear the socks by themselves as you putter around the house...
I will edit the article, once I have reviewed the changes with my niece, his daughter, and my sister, his first wife. My niece is the executor of his estate, and a well known Mexican actress in her own right.
Clemens was THE master of satire. You can hear his tongue wedged firmly in cheek in these utterances. His disdain for politicians was so well known and thorough that ANYTHING he said to them had to be taken verbatim, and then reversed! He knew without doubt that the politicians before whom he was testifying, were for the most part totally corrupt, and would do whatever they wanted, his utterances notwithstanding. In such a case, why bother to be serious?
The reason why what MS is doing should be considered anti-competitive and trigger an anti-trust action, and Apple doing much the same thing is not so much, is this; Apple owns/builds the entire system, hardware and software; Microsoft sells software to end-users or OEMs (hardware manufacturers). If Windows mobile was only available on gear designed and manufactured by Microsoft, then I say they can limit the apps to whatever they want; however, for them to do this for systems that are designed, built, and sold by other parties, then I think they should have the "book" thrown at them for this sort of behavior.
The reason why the CTIA is fighting this law likely has zip to do with "confusion in the trenches", but more likely one of liability if they release such data without a warrant being presented, which is their current SOP. The police are likely to be against the bill for similar reasons, plus the burden on them of obtaining a warrant and then delivering it to the phone company in question.
$10? $15? for an eBook? They are out of their minds. If they aren't, then how does Baen, one of the biggest fantasy/sci-fi publishers make money selling their eBooks (without DRM no less) for $6?
1. I won't pay a penny for ANYTHING with DRM - DVD's being the only exception because their DRM is totally broken and ignored by everyone.
2. I only pay Baen more than $6 when I can't wait and just HAVE to get the advanced reader's copy of a volume. My only complaint here (they are $15) is that they don't let you get the published volume when it is released unless you pay them another $6. Sounds like I won't be paying them the premium much longer...
So, I think Baen has hit the sweet spot for eBooks prices. I'll buy a bunch (and I do) at $6, especially since I can read it on my computer (online if I want), on my Palm (now in retirement), on my Android phone, and on my eBook reader (it is NOT from a major book seller).
$10 or $15 for an eBook? There is zero printing, binding, and shipping costs. The relative costs of online hosting compared to that is likely peanuts on a per unit basis, and the printing is just-in-time (copy bits to the network), doesn't cost overtime, and works 24x7.
Great posting Jesse! I vote you best TD post of the week! :-) Most enjoyable reading, and very good writing, in my opinion (creative writing and English literature major in college)... I look forward to more missives from you.
I was the inventor of a US patent for adaptive system software. What have I earned from it? A $500 bonus from my (previous) employer. If they exploited it, they could earn million$, but they haven't. What is this patent now worth? Probably a line on my resume, and helping me to land my current (new) position as a senior engineer for a tier-one mobile phone manufacturer...
If Zuckerberg continues to support this, I and about 10 gazillion others will drop our FB accounts and move to Google+. Google has its issues, but in this case, ANYTHING they do is better than FB!
At the very least, they have violated her copyright to the music, if not the lyrics. Personal use, or remixing for not-for-profit uses is one thing (and IMO should be allowed, always), but this is commercial use. I hope she gets her pound of flesh from these rip-offs!
This entire imbroglio smells just like a classic frame up. "Trust us, we're the government." - like I'll do that! Doing this, they have abrogated any of our trust that they may have earned in the past. If the NZ government doesn't through out all charges against Dotcom and return his assets to him, they are in turn guilty of high crimes and felonies, not to mention misdemeanors!
If the school system wants to teach these kids a good lesson, it is that one should be responsible for one's own actions. To that end, the teachers and administrators responsible for this incomprehensible action in suspending the students, should be suspended themselves for 3 days without pay, and be demoted in position and seniority. Let the punishment fit the crime! The students committed no crime here, other than being smart-assed teenagers (a normal state of affairs). The teachers and administrators on the other hand violated the students due Constitutional rights under color of authority. In many situations, that is a felony!
I just paid a visit to the EB web site in order to look up the entry for a family member (late brother-in-law) who was quite well known (famous) in international music. The article was concise, but accurate. The Wikipedia article was not so concise, but it was also less accurate. My main complaint is that the trial period for full article access is that it is only for 7 days. I have complained to them about this, stating that 30 days would be more reasonable, and make me feel less rushed into a financial decision. Who knows if they will listen. In any case, their policies on linking and access from web blogs and such seem reasonable to me. Bear in mind that my favorite EB edition is the 1910/1911 one... I have that, as well as a mid-1970's edition on my bookshelves.
I've been boycotting Sony ever since their CD rootkit fiasco a few years ago, and NOTHING they have done since has changed my stance on that! Don't give them a cent. Don't subscribe to their services. Don't purchase ANYTHING that Sony derives financial benefit from, including BluRay players. Don't buy their games or game consoles. Don't buy their PC's (they suck anyway). Don't purchase any music or movies that they and their subsidiaries produce (pirate it all instead). Let them know by the impact on their pocketbook and bank balance that we are fed up with their crud and until they change their attitudes and policies, they won't get a cent from any of us!
