So I have to ask, is the Kindle ebook DRM-encumbered? Probably, and if so, I'll just have to get the hard copy, or borrow it from the library. I refuse 100% to purchase anything that is DRM-encumbered. My one exception is for standard DVDs since I can easily break the CSS on them in order to back them up and extract the videos for space-shifting purposes.
Do corporate lawyers have a requirement to be corrupt and violate their oaths taken when they were admitted to the Bar? These dipwads should have their licenses to practice law revoked on grounds that they have violated their sworn code of ethics!
Take 6 untracked terrorists, each with 1 1oz bottle of explosive liquid (or binary precursor - not detectable by bomb sniffers) + 1 with an empty 6oz bottle. On plane, add 6x1oz bottles of liquid to 6oz empty bottle, insert one undetectable trigger/detonator smuggled on by another terrorist (or more, in case one gets caught), and voila!

My wife and I have a LOT of friends who are professional indie musicians, and while they make a living at their craft, it is a tough road! They tour almost constantly, depend upon friends and those who book them for housing and often food, fund their own CD production, maintain web sites, manage their business... The list is endless. What results is that they inspire people with their music, and contribute to our understanding of our culture and history. We bless them for it, and support them in all the ways we can, from putting on house concerts for them, having them stay with us when in the area, and just being as good of friends as we can possibly be.
In the middle ages, bards were revered and supported by the communities they served. This has not changed. We all need to be willing to give back something for the joy and wisdom they bring us!
I'd copyright Manhattan 5 o'clock traffic sounds, but I think Karlheinz Stockhausen already has that locked up with his early woodwind quintet works...
Just consider that the Babel, I mean Bible, is perhaps the greatest work of fiction ever written - enormous in scope, inspiring in (some of) its messages, dealing with much of the human condition. What better tome (AFAIK, it is public domain...) to work out the kinks in ePublishing?
We had an ice cream social at work this afternoon, and one of the toppings was Oreo crumbles - yum! It is a classic, and I expect it will be around about as long as the human race is. :-)
You'd think that these pinheads would realize that when some other site is pushing people to your own site, that this is a GOOD thing? Arrrrgh! If I were managing the sites that are complaining about this, I would drop all that cruft and send a nice "thank-you basket" (filled with tonnes of $$) to those who were sending me so many paying customers!
Well, I agree that copyright of basic animal noises is just silly/stupid/ridiculous/absurd, but as for determination that the copy of such a recording is a copy is not difficult. There is freely available software that can generate a "signature" of any sound recording, compare it to another, and determine if they are copies of the same source recording. I'm sure that the MGM lion roar is quite distinctive, from the forensics perspective at least.
Every penny Rumblefish may have earned, multiplied by some reasonable number (say 100), should be remitted by them to the videographer who originally posted the film to YouTube. They assaulted him, took advantage of his work, and were just generally obnoxious, not to mention behaved in an illegal manner in that they were claiming rights to something they had no rights to! This should be the case for every company that does what they did.
Most of us have seen old movies with the kid on the corner hawking papers - "Extra! Extra! Read All About It! MPAA Caught in a Lie! SOPA Defeated! Extra! Extra!". Ah, that old extra edition of the dirt-digging papers of the 20's and 30's. When was the last time that any of us remember seeing an extra edition of our local paper? Me, at 60+ years ... NEVER! In any case, papers with their hot-off-the-presses extra editions were the resonator 70 or 80 years ago. When the newspapers stopped printing extra editions on a moment's notice, they lost the race to remain relevant to the modern era of rapid change and global information flow.
If they (Viacom) were to ask me what they should do about "piracy" on the Internet, I would simply tell them to put a loaded gun to their heads and pull the trigger! Doh! They have already done that, but their brains are so small that the bullet missed, I think! Either that, or they are so stupid (due to small brain capacity) that their body hasn't received the message that they are dead yet!
