I use gmail, which, while not "unlimited", has a pretty hefty chunk of storage, and seems to be growing faster than my usage. It's convenient, and it's nice to be able to access my mail from places other than home.
But once a week or so, I download all my gmail to my home system with Thunderbird (free, open-source news/mail reader). Once a year, my emails get archived to CD. That way, I will still have my back emails even if Google decided for some reason to terminate gmail, or maybe an earthquake or tornado took out one of their datacenters, etc.
I keep all my non-spam email forever. I occasionally retrieve emails sent to me more than 5 years ago.
Since statistics have been kept in Texas (1994), CHL holders are only 25% as likely to miss the target as licensed law enforcement. That is because they tend to practice more. Here in Plano, I asked two officers (Plano's Finest!), on two separate occasions, a simple question ("What type of ammunition do you carry in your duty weapon?"), and got the same answer from both ("I don't know; whatever the department issues."). Nobody graduates from my CHL classes who doesn't know what kind of ammo he or she carries.
Like Mr. Young, I would be willing to undertake any required training and qualification tests needed to carry on board commercial aircraft at my own expense. I would be willing to equip myself with whatever type of weapon and ammunition is required at my own expense.
And, if I was not able to meet the qualifications, I would simply abide by that. Even if I can't be armed, if anybody tries to hijack an aircraft that I am on, I will either neutralize the the perp, or die in the attempt, because there is NO OTHER MORALLY ACCEPTABLE CHOICE.
The thing that did it for me was having a roof installed by a "authorized" Sears contractor. If I had wanted a roof installed by a bunch of half-drunk illegal aliens (who littered my yard with beer cans), that had no meaningful warranty, and leaked every time it rained, I could have gotten that from somebody else at less than half the cost of a Sears roof.
I was flabbergasted to learn that a "warranty" that covered "materials and labor" did not actually cover LEAKS! Like just WTF is a roof supposed to DO, anyway? It cost me another $500 (to a different contractor) to fix their defective installation.
Prior to that time, I had actually bought most of my clothes, a large part of my household appliances, and all of my tools there. Those bastards will never get another dime out of me. If Sears is the ONLY place that sells a given item, I will do without.
I sure as Hell won't be subscribing to their malware. I'm not at all surprised that their "community" is infested with that sort of crap.
Vista is the best thing that Microsoft has ever done... for Apple. When I could not find a local store with a computer that didn't have Vista on it, I finally broke down and looked at Apple. Now I could kick myself for taking so long.
The social experience that I have had in my last (not recent) trip to a theater included:
1) Sticky floors
2) Cellphone users
3) People chatting
4) Sound system with way too much bass
5) Long lines at the overpriced concessions
6) Sitting through 10 minutes of commercials
None of which I have to endure at home with my DVR or my VHS (yes, it still works, and I can still rent them). I prefer VHS over DVD because nobody has figured out how to prevent me from skipping the commercials (and hence, they tend to be fewer and shorter).
If I miss something in the action or dialog, I can go back and look/listen again.
And at home, I can have the social experience of sitting with my wife's feet in my lap, rubbing on them :). Or I can pause the movie while I enjoy an even more intense social experience... -- Legal Requirements for TX CHL
RP supporters need to do a spam with links to YouTube videos of the Liberal candidates.
Except that probably wouldn't actually work. I would be willing to bet money that YouTube would find a reason to make an 'exception' for Hillary's videos.
The COTUS isn't a perfect document; it' just better than what we are living under now. Don't think RP has a chance? Then go stick your head back in the sand, and don't bother to vote at all, since the winner is going to be Tweedledum or Tweedledee anyway...
Too bad I couldn't reach any of the links on BFAds. Seems the crapware list in my hosts file blocks all of them.
"Black Friday" (much like Christmas) is basically a pain in the ass, anyway. I had been ignoring it in the past, but I got a notice from Fry's about some things I thought I might like to buy at pretty good prices, so I actually went out there at 5:00 this morning. I was expecting maybe a couple of hundred die-hard shoppers to be waiting at the door, and I was planning to just park in the far part of the lot and wait in my truck for the line to get in.
OH. MY. GOD.
I was off by about two orders of magnitude. Not a parking spot within a quarter-mile (not even any illegal ones left).
I'm somewhat embarrassed that I factored myself in with the epsilon-minuses, even just this once. But, lesson learned; never again will I lose any sleep worrying about getting to the store on time to get a Black Friday special.
Fry's is now on my list of places to avoid until at least the end of January. Sorry, but there isn't a hard drive or LCD display priced low enough to make me stand out in the cold for over an hour while the Fire Marshall makes sure that the building capacity is not exceeded. I don't care if the damned things are FREE!
Reminds me of the song "The Future Isn't What It Used To Be", which was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2003 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. From the now-defunct group "Minstrosity":
"Way back in the 1940's
There were lots of magazines
With their covers full of miracles
And futuristic scenes;
Individual flying cars
That safely flew themselves,
And folded into suitcases
You stuck up on your shelves."
As a private pilot, I can say that I am very glad that the mass-production flying car is not for real. In aviation, there is no such thing as a 'minor' accident, and when you run out of fuel, you don't just pull over and walk to the nearest gas station with your gas can. And the #1 cause of general aviation accidents is the pilot overestimating his skills (VFR flight into IFR conditions), a very common characteristic of automobile drivers (I also teach Texas defensive driving courses). -- Texas CHL Courses
"Yet the only real advantage of an e-book is that it saves some space."
Last time I moved, more than 50% of the weight of my household shipment was books.
Another advantage of a e-book is that the production cost is lower, and you only have to 'manufacture' the exact quantity that is sold. It can then be delivered nearly instantly. Keeping a backlist is no longer an issue (there are books that I own that can no longer be purchased ANYWHERE).
That said, the e-book readers I've seen aren't quite ready for prime time, but some of them are getting close. Also, the e-book business model currently sucks, but eventually somebody will get it right, and all the idiots will be forced to follow suit or go out of business (unless they can make non-DRM illegal).

If movies and TV are too expensive, don't buy them. Kinda like the whining I hear about "nothing good on TV", to which I reply, "If you don't like what's on TV, turn it off". I have no sympathy for self-inflicted injury. -- TX CHL Instructor
I have FiOS as my main phone service, so my VOIP service goes over exactly the same lines as my regular phone service. I have both for business reasons -- and VOIP has many features that my regular phone service doesn't have (my favorite is that every time I get a phone call from a phone solicitor, I enter their number into my "always busy" list. It's fun to see how some of them will continue to call many dozens of times just to get a busy signal.) -- The 2nd Amendment isn't about Duck Hunting

BTW, why do you think those young men from Arabia hijacked an American plane, and not an Israeli plane? A1: Israeli pilots are armed. A2: Terrorists and other criminals prefer 'soft' targets.
