Not a lawyer but I do not believe this is illegal. It's a essentially a penalty for breach of contract. They aren't still charging them for the tickets.
Couldn't have said it better myself. The thought never even occurred to me to send this in. Been reading about it the last couple days. There was an article this morning's Washington post about it and they said only 9 teams in the NFL make a point to not sue their season ticket holders.
"And... actually, it is reselling those tickets for a nice profit while still collecting huge cash awards from those who couldn't pay"
Funny thing is that they are reselling the tickets through things like stubhub and fans from other teams are buying the tickets. The steelers redskins game last year was about a 1/3 Steelers fans if not more.
Surprisingly Microsoft does something like this for customers with XBox Live and the dreaded RROD. They give you a 1-month subscription card for the service to make up for the weeks you lost while they repair your system.
do we have websites all about reading ebooks? (reading.. not finding)
Can't say we do, but that sounds like a good idea. Maybe someone should create an e-book scrobbling site ala Last.fm. People could post what books they've read and are currently reading. People could find new books to read based on what others with similar tastes have read.
Anyone feels like making this site, feel free to be a "parasite" and steal my idea. Just kidding, take it and run with it.
"The idea is that a newspaper probably has 10 or 15 percent of its audience who are the most engaged, who come to that Web site all the time. Those are the people who will be asked to pay a small portion."
I'm pretty sure the people that most frequent the site do so to avoid paying for the print edition. I know I read the paper online most days. If the washington post forced me to pay to read online, I never would.
Maybe it has trouble with the lower case English more than french because it's an American spell checker. We do use "french fries" a lot more often than any food that starts with english such as "english muffin".
On the subject of foreign languages, I would think that part of the reason most Americans don't learn one is due to necessity. I would imagine living in Europe, people travel to other countries every now and then just as we travel from state to state. Only difference is here every state speaks english. The only borders we have are Canada to the north (hey, they speak English there), and Mexico to the south. I'm getting a little ticked off every time I hear the "Americans only speak English because they think the world revolves around them" attitude. Honestly, if you didn't need to speak a foreign language your daily routine, what percentage of people would still learn one? Just wondering.
C'mon RIAA representatives. I know one of you can afford that silence Techdirt for a year promotion. I know I'd hate it if this site was gone for a year, but I don't think Mike would be complaining with that big fat check.
Perhaps the idea would be to show people what they'd be missing before the proposed law is voted on. In theory, this doesn't seem like such a bad idea. In practice, I'm not sure how they would pull it off. It's not like there's some special blogging authority that oversees all blogging.
I went to University of MD for 4 years. This isn't anything new. At UMD, if you are caught cheating and the prof wants to, they give you an XF. This is permanent on your transcript. They won't take it off. Fine by me policy, as they have a pretty rigorous review process for such accusations and it really only shows up if there's significant proof that you cheated.
Just posted this. Wouldn't expect the examiner to mention the app. It's not exactly what I'd call a decent paper (they send free ones to the house every now and then). It's kinda annoying.
Well said. Maybe something like this will encourage cops to actually try and keep the roads safe. Rather than just sitting there handing out tickets on a straight away.
Just to let anyone who cares know. I didn't see it's name mentioned in the original article or this post. The app is called Trapster. It's quite useful, especially if you're on a road trip or in an unfamiliar area.
